machine gun kelly Posted August 18, 2020 Share Posted August 18, 2020 Schein has been hot on the Bills for awhile. Some don’t like his dramatic takes, but he’s always been fun to listen to on Sirius. I used to call in when he was on NFLR, but since Schein on sports, I typically just check in and then watch him on the cable shows. I love our D but I wouldn't exactly go that far. Our DL is strong and deep. Our safety duo is strong and disciplined. But,...... Outside of our All Pro CB we have nothing but a ? on the other side. Wallace who is serviceable but also gets taken behind the woodshed every so often. Norman who may have a renaissance under McD but it would be foolish to think he'll lock down the #2 spot after a few seasons of sub par play in Washington. Our slot DBs are solid. LB? We have a young, supremely athletic MLB who still suffers from lapses in judgment (arrow pointing up) and a OLB who is a coverage specialist that lacks thump and tackling proficiency ( but a great fit in this scheme) The benefit for these 2 is that they're young and entering their 3rd season playing together. Klein is JAG who like Norman may find a rebirth in this system. And yes, I understand we can't have an All Pro at every position? And yes I do believe this is a Top 5 unit in the league. Tre is one of the best if not the best corner in the league, Hyde and Poyer are one of the best safety pairs in the league, Edumonds is a Pro-Bowl Caliber LB who can ascend into one of the best at the position, Milano is a borderline Pro-Bowl Talent and Ed Oliver is a breakout waiting to happen. The rest of the defense are solid starters and good role players. But while the collection of talent is good, the way they play as a unit is outstanding. The D-line (barring an Ed Oliver breakout) doesn't feature any Pro-Bowl talent yet they consistently hold their own and the Secondary doesn't feature superstars at CB2 or CB3 yet they aren't a liability. The theory is that Derwin James coming back takes this defense back to the next level, with the help of newly signed Chris Harris. Realistically it is a really solid secondary and two ferocious pass rushers. I think we have the depth on them, as well as a stronger presence in the middle of the field. I just don't like the no weakness bit. Maybe its the you can always improve mantra or something. Now, the folks we signed to support the DL, maybe they have run stop ability that we were otherwise lacking. I read that AJ Klein is specifically a run stuff guy as a LB. I think they’re well positioned to do that with Oliver in his second year and Addison/Epenesa as upgrades over Lawson/Murphy. Id also like to see Edmunds blitz more. Are you worried about the corners behind White? McDermott gets the most out of the secondary and we have had one of the best passing defenses in the league since he has been here. I mean opposing teams routinely are held to under 200 yards passing...how often can any of the DBs really be getting "taken out behind the woodshed"? I am talking in comparison to other teams giving up far more yards and completions a game... The pass D has been so good that any pass completion of more than 20 yards is almost like a shock because it happens so infrequently...and you are like "Wow they are giving up some big chunks of yardage!" and then you look after the game and the opposing QB threw for 188 yards. Even when we had Phillips and Lawson sacking opposing QB, it didn't feel like they were terrorizing the QB. We don't have that player who can make that play when it counts (even Hughes included). Hughes is good, but he can't do it on his own.
