AJ Green and Daryl Williams

If I'm Bean right now these are my targets after today's signings.  We missed out on AB and it's a weak free agent receiver class.  Tyrell Williams is nice and all but he is not a #1 guy although he is about to be paid like one.  I would rather not go after him and at worst save that money for other free agents this season or next.  The draft seems to be weak at the top end for receivers.  I know everyone is nutting over Metcalf but for me, that cone and shuttle drill pretty much takes him off my board in the first round.

That leaves trade to be the most viable option for a true #1 receiver.  People keep throwing around Beckham but he is going to cost too much in a trade.  I think the Bills would have to give up the 9th overall + to get him.  Also I can't think of a personality that would take to Buffalo less than Beckham.  He is a megadiva and I think it would be a mistake to bring him here.

So the other guys that have been speculated to be available would be AJ Green and Julio Jones.  Julio Jones I kind of don't think is realistic for a few reasons.  Despite him just turning 30, I still think he would cost the 9th overall + to get.  Also the Falcons have Matt Ryan and I think they aren't breaking those two up anytime soon.

As for AJ Green, I think he could be had.  Green is a free agent after this season and he is going to want one more big payday which I don't know if the Bangles are going to want to ante up for.  If I am the Bills I am offering the 2nd round pick in the upcoming draft, and maybe a third in 2020.  Then I am offering Green a 3 year deal that makes him the highest paid receiver in the league or close to it.  Keeping him signed to 3 years avoids future cap problems if Allen pans out and we want to sign him long term.

Then I am looking to sign Daryl Williams to a 3 year deal around $11-13 million per year.  Again you give him big money but keeping it to three years allows us to avoid future cap problems and doesn't preclude you from re-signing Dion Dawkins when he is up for his next contract, assuming he develops into a worthwhile tackle or guard.

With this approach you go into the draft with a true top tier #1 receiver, who is not at all a headcase locked in.  Then you are looking to draft BPA at 9 which will probably be an OT or a defensive lineman.  Maybe you take Taylor or Williams at #9.  Taylor may not be there but you may be able to trade down and still take Jonah Williams, or just trade down and go in another direction.  Regardless, with what we already did today, adding Green and Daryl Williams would gives the Bills tons of flexibility at draft time even with giving up the 2nd.

Taylor/Williams, Dawkins, Morse, Long/Teller, Williams

or

Dawkins, XXX/Teller, Morse, Long, Williams

In the first scenario we use our first pick on a LT and may have gone from maybe the worst offensive line in the league to one of the best.  In the second we have still improved our line vastly and it can still be very good or better.  I think either scenario with AJ Green added to the mix is enough to get me as excited as a Bills fan since I have been since I was a kid during the Kelly years.  I hope this is along the lines McBean is thinking.

Where the reports Cincinnati wants to trade him?

No reports, as I said in my post it's speculation.

Lots to unpack here...

First thought: You're not interested in OBJ because we'd have to give up our 1... but how are we going to get AJGreen?

Second... This article is worth the read -- the "alpha receiver" is a dying paradigm in this NFL -- it's all about leveraging your players' strengths and finding the right players for the right roles.

Third... Metcalf's agility drills were underwhelming, but consider a few things:

1) the combine is a beauty pageant, there's no way he'll play at the size he was there -- without question that bulk affected his agility

2) even if he's not the most agile player in the league, the short shuttle means VEEEEERRRRY little for WRs, and many big name WRs have had bad 3-cone drills, and many very bad ones have had great 3-cone drills... Nuke Hopkins had an awful 3-cone drill... I'd be leery about him, but dismissing him because of one bad measurement is silly.

I'm with you on not loving OBJ's attitude, but I don't think AJGreen is as gettable as some would like to believe, nor do I really think he's the answer to our solutions.

Daryl Williams would be great, I'm honestly surprised there's not been more tangible news connecting us to him, it makes too much sense to not be happening.

VERY deep.

Metcalf, both Browns, Butler, Harmon, Harry, Ridley, Samuel, Campbell, Hardman, Arcega-Whiteside (ugh), Isabella (ugh), McLaurin, and Hall could all be big time performers in the right situation...

I hear what you are saying and you may very well be right that Green would cost more than what I posted.  If that is the case I don't think I would be interested.  My thinking is I would rather give up the picks and get a top tier receiver for sure rather than drafting a player that may or may not pan out.  Also even if the "Alpha" receiver is dying out, I think it would just open up the rest of the offense so much to have Green on the field and would give Allen a great WR who can make things a little easier on him in what is going to be his most important season for development.

Yep and I said in the OP it was speculation.  People responding to point out that my idea for a Green trade was speculation is unnecessary as it is in the OP.  It's kind of what message boards are for.  To speculate on possible moves and such.  Happens all the time.  Kind of weird that you feel the need to police this thread.

It usually takes rookie receivers 2 or 3 years to finally find their groove though. This team can't afford that. This offense needs playmakers. Get Green and still draft your receiver that way if we release Green after 3 years, the rookie should be ready to by then if he pans out

The formula in today’s NFL does not call for that #1 receiver anymore. You need a quarterback who can see the whole field and utilize multiple weapons. If we want Allen to be that guy he needs to use multiple weapons not force feed targets to an AB or OBJ.. AJ Green is not that type of guy to make waves if he doesn’t get his targets, but I can’t see anyway Cincinnati would ship him away. They’re not in rebuild yet and aren’t that far from being a playoff team

I don't think there is one way to win and I don't think Allen is going to win by the formula you just laid out.  That is not his game.  For Allen to be great he is going to need to use his legs and make plays out of the pocket, both running and throwing.  He is going to be a big play QB and he is going to need a high end weapon or two.

Also simply having a great receiver on the roster does not mean you have to force him targets.  I realize that some people think have the opinion that you don't need a #1 receiver and I get that, but if the Bills were to get Green it would make the team significantly more dangerous on offense and slot everyone else down to a more realistic role.  I think some of you are going overboard with how you don't need a #1.  Green would make a huge difference on this team.

I would be all about trading for AJ Green. He’d be a great fit. He’s a total team first guy, great in the locker room and in the community + he’s a super hard worker. You’d never have to worry about him refusing some extra reps with Allen... lol.

But I don’t see why Cincy would want to move on and I haven’t seen anything reported that makes me think they will.

Green already said he’s fine on his current deal and not looking for any type of raise (after the AB situation), and he’s basically been a model Cincinnati Bengal. I’d be pretty shocked if they decided to move him.

I think Green is a heck of a player, but he’s not actually available and would be prohibitively expensive with draff picks. I’d rather just keep our picks and sign both Tyrell Williams & John Brown and have what would be an underrated yet very strong receiving corp.

I'd be fine with it if Daryl Williams was the last thing the Bills did in FA before the draft.

Lots of cap space will still be left over with lots of cap space in 2020.

I'm with you on this.  If they are able to sign Daryl Williams, it gives Beane the flexibility to go with pass rusher, d-tackle, or receiver in round 1 of the draft.  Although I'm still scratching my head over the Gore signing, I like what the Bills have done so far in FA.  They are setting things up well for the draft to select BPA.

I think with a new RT, C and #1 WR, we'd take Ed Oliver. I have no inside info, but Beane seems to really like physical freaks like Edmunds and Allen. Oliver is just that. Just a guess, though. In round 3, using your scenario, we could go OL or TE or RB or WR. I'm hoping they will be looking for guys with solid ST credentials on day 3.

But if we could get Green for a 2nd and next year's 3rd, I'd be all over that. You're probably right, though. I doubt he'd come that cheaply. In your scenario, on the other hand, we'd be without a #1 WR and I don't really agree that would be a "very strong" WR corps. It would suffice, though. I'd be OK with that if we grabbed 1 or 2 more solid OL and ran the ball a lot more. Also, I'll be surprised if either Brown or Williams come to Buffalo.

I would agree with u on this if I felt the Bills were a Wr away from contending but we're not.  We need to draft 2 Wrs early in this upcoming draft and maybe even one late. Build up our skill positions in the draft with home grown talent.

The Bills have been in the market for a slot Wr but there's plenty of them in this draft.  Matter of fact I think its the best I ever saw for that position.

AJ Brown

Deebo Samuel

Andy Isabella

Terry McLaurin

Penny Hart

These guys all can be really good players in the future and some of these guys u can get in the mid rds of the draft. If I'm the Bills I'm staying off the free agent market for Wrs until the dust settles these guys just ain't worth the money there getting right now.

I mean, the Bengals just gave a giant contract to a horrible tackle... Maybe we can call and offer to give them a cold if they give us Green.

3 year 21 million dollar deal for a tackle is nothing.  Salary cap went up, contracts will all go up.  Look at what Trent Brown got.  Daryl Williams is about to get an astronomical contract too but that's what happens when the cap goes up.

John Clayton was just on WGR yesterday and he said the Bengals are NOT trading AJ Green...he said they do more 3rd contracts with playrrs than any other team in the league and will be trying to sign him to an extension after this year ends.

I thought he would have been priority number one after reading reports about him joining the Bills..I doubt it works out now...since Beane gave 7 mill a year to a depth tackle.
