Astro’s Scouting the Scouts - tracked which college games Bills scouts and FO leadership attended

I always find this interesting come draft season

Astro’s Scouting The Scouts

The Bills’ scouts have been busy this year. Since late August, they have been attending the games of dozens of teams. What games the scouts went to, how often they scouted each team, and where Brandon Beane and Ass’t. GM Joe Schoen have gone has been very telling.

This year, I decided to go a few steps further, and analyzed video and box scores of each attended game. I’ve tried to guess which players might have caught the scouts’ eyes.

he only notes a few OL

OT Jonah Williams

 C-OG Pierschbacher RD5-6

OT David Edwards RD1 tradedown

This is awesome.  Any idea how accurate he is with his guesses at the projections?

He is usually really good with how many times they go to see specific schools - they saw Tre White play live 3x for example but we all thought that they were there to see Jamal Adams based on where they were drafting before they traded down. What threw me off big time last year was that they never went to see Josh Allen play live. Unless it was uncredentialed. They saw Darnold 2x and Beane and Schoen went to see Rudolph.

That's interesting.  What are the details on uncredentialed visits?  Is that legal per NFL rules or can teams do whatever they want in regards to that?

It’s legal but the scouts need to buy a ticket and sit with the fans

Didnt Beane talk about watching him live at a game and how JA was reacting on the sidelines with his teammates?

He could have, or Astro just missed it. He had one college scout at one game as i recall, but not Beane. My point was just that it’s not exact from a prediction standpoint - thinking if Beane didn’t see someone live he’s not going in the 1st. He could have seen him, unreported.

Looking back they actually saw Darnold live 3x

Gotcha, I edited my post as to clarify, it sounded like you werent sure if Beane had gone uncredentialed or not, I was just relaying the fact it seemed he did

He also didn’t list all the guys the scouts watched at those games he has listed.

He has them at the PSU/Iowa game but didn’t list Sanders. I was hoping the Bills would look at Sanders, unfortunately he didn’t impress in that game.

Astro may have written this up before Sanders declared.

I know it's not just OL that we scouted, but in reference to the players mentioned, I wonder how this has changed post-senior bowl and knowing the likes of Risner and Lindstrom are now higher considerations. Especially with the former stating he could fit within the culture.  Can't imagine our FO to be that narrow-minded that their board is more or less set at this point in the process, but I just hope the more recent demonstrations and examples outweigh the in-season hype for certain guys.

Not as surprised to see Pierschbacher on there, and glad to see we're considering late round OL projections.

But I also hope that this doesn't mean we're that high on Jonah still either...

While I find it interesting, I don’t assign a lot of meaning to it. Astro knows when they have been at certain games, but he is only guessing at who they are watching. Any bama game could yield multiple prospects at multiple positions, for example. And watching Jonah Williams, for example) could yield any result toward their draft grade on him. It doesnt indicate at all how high they are on any certain players. They Need to evaluate him no matter what -  they could have a 2nd rd grade on him but they still need to watch him. Simply put I don’t think you can draw any conclusions from the info but i do find it interesting the way Astro breaks it down based on where they went, the draft eligible players in that game, and then team need aligned to projected draft position for each one,

Great points - and for sure, certainly appreciate the tracking Astro breaks down as it at least gives us an idea of where the FO is scouting. I'm more or less attempting to extrapolate on that to see where we might be placing emphasis and in what ways, but very valid point mentioning just because we went that many times doesn't mean we're necessarily up on any one guy, or down on another.

I find that Astro is quite accurate with regard to one thing: How many times Bills scouts or personnel people have visited a given school. Trying to figure out which prospect they were there to see specifically is all guess work.

Astro is usually spot on with his comments.  Does anybody know if he has a job?  His research has to take a lot of time, and just wondering if he had any other responsibilities?  Why isn't he a scout for us?

I believe he works for the draft website Draftek, as well as the Bills Mafia blog site. So this is his job, so to speak.

Astro  seems like a good guy and has a passion for this stuff... I would generally  look at his twitter comments  couple of times a week...

Not sure how much you can read into his speculations though but its all part of the fun..

I actually just looked at Astro’s reports on scouting visits from last year. I was hoping it would show us something by looking in the reaview mirror. I was surprised that I didn’t see a lot of players the Bills drafted or signed as UDFAs on the list. Josh Allen was on the list, obviously, because we looked at all the QBs. Cam Phillips was in for a predraft visit. But beyond that, I didn’t see many familiar names on Astro’s list from last year.

Not knocking Astro’s reporting...I think it’s fantastic. I just think the scouting and visits aren’t a good crystal ball for who we might pick. I wonder if those visits end up being more useful after the fact for scouting players other teams drafted.

Not super pleased with the apparent lack of scouting of Online reported. You have to assume that the scouts are being sent to buy tickets and scouting people under the radar to hide our intentions. If Astro can find this, you better believe teams have a guy assigned to try and figure this out.

He knows which teams they watched play live. He does not know who they are there to see on each team. He’s just guessing.

Also, scouts are at practices all the time too. These are just games.
