What was the worst pain you guys have felt? Has anyone ever broken any bones or worse like concussions or other organ injuries or major surgeries you have ever had? My Dad just went through Prostate surgery and Bladder surgery. He said it was painful but doing great now. Anyone have any stories?

Broke my elbow chasing My Brother in the parking lot of Crystal Beach, 1977.  Left elbow needed surgery, pin still in.  Fell trying to hurdle the parking lot chains.  Landed on grass.  I knew I instantly broke it.  Went back to the States to get it repaired.

Good old days... When You went back to the car for lunch!

Game brought back memories of Trent Edwards getting twisted up like a pretzel. (looked real painful)

rotator cuff tear and ensuing hassles that follow, that syringe is long for injections

Very very fortunate this is it from sports as I’m into my 50s

I keep remembering my arm can’t go under the pillow and my elbow must be below my head when I sleep on my side, otherwise....

and get a Thera Cane is you have shoulder problems!!!!

I’ve dislocated left elbow- snatching, arm went backwards, broken right collar bone, dislocated L knee thrice- football, have 45 stitches in L leg- fell from a cliff ledge, sutured cheek- glassed- pub work, forehead- pub work, lips- blacked out weightlifting, chin laceration and chipped chin- football, dental implant- glassed, pub work,  fingers- broken- football, pubs and sutures- opened a glass bottle that the metal cap had stuck on and the cap and neck of the bottle snapped and went through hand, back sutures- stabbed in pub, L foot- smashed toe- crow bar.

Was a ‘difficult’ youngster!

Worse actual pain, watching my daughter being anaesthetised for a procedure, my 9 month old in ICU with hydrocephalus and again my daughter when born was in NICU- Bay 8 for 2 weeks. They were far worse for me!

I was doing minor maintenance underneath my tractor.

Not a small one, about 4000 pounds.

The hydrostat transmission suddenly engaged, (long technical reason), and it started forward.

Big tractor tires got my shirt in a split second and pinned me.

The tractor ran over me, right across my chest.

I was facing down.

Anyway, broke 21 of my 24 ribs.

Four hour surgery and four titanium pieces to reconnect ribs.

Until you’ve had an Anal Fissure, don’t talk to me.

i asked a friend at what point did he not care or be embarrassed and have to go to the doctor the first time

he said he was standing and screaming into a bath towel while trying to have a bowel movement before he didn't care about his dignity any  more

I’ve got bunions with plantar fasciitis and gout and I can tell you that anal fissures are right up there or worse.

Gout is another one. Don’t even talk to me unless the weight of a cotton sheet on your big toe makes you want to cry in pain has ever happened to you.

Or for those people that have experienced the pain of trigimina neuralgia. Up there with some of the worst pain ever.

Ive had all 3 of these. They all come and go at different times. Well, the fissure is hopefully healing. Sure doesn’t feel like it tho.

Trigiminal nueralgia and Gout make you want to punch someone or something.

The owner of my company sleeps with a kleenex box on his feet because of gout.   Thought it was funny when i heard it,  now not so much.

Tore mine in 2006, at work.  First time experience with a "nerve block."  Had the surgery, went home, was OK, till the freakin nerve block wore off, then indescribable pain. Couldn't lie in bed, had to wear this appliance, that resembled a love seat, around my neck, and rest my arm on.  So I obviously got thru it.  Have the same probs in bed, as you describe.

8 years later, went in to have some MRI confirmed bone chips removed.  When I woke up, they told me it was a rotator cuff.  Just wanted to end it all then!  Since it was not a result of an injury, maybe just wore out, the recovery was a piece of cake.  No love seat to wear, and very minor pain.

i've read that shoulder pain is one of the worst, sleep is impossible, i'm often in physio or massage to maintain a balance

since i have it, it sucks, but i don't consider it to be all that bad, it doesn't restrict mobility

I only got the upper 3rd of my finger which may have made it worse. Tip of the index finger probably has more feeling in it then pinky.

PRK laser eye surgery was horrible, they didn't hand out opiates readily back then

PRK probably stood for park a hornet's nest on your eyeballs, the doc told me to call him at a number if the pain was too bad to handle, for which I guess in hindsight he would have prescribed opiates

they readily hand them out these days, and PRK method is probably a thing of the past, but it was horrible

This is going to be a long winded story, so I apologize in advance...

I completely destroyed my knee riding a motocross bike (dirt bike) I used to have.

I was out riding with a bunch of guys from the motorcycle shop I worked at (at the time). It was a nice week at the end of winter. Everything had melted so it was very muddy. The knobs on my tires were pretty worn down and since I hadn’t planned on riding anymore that season I was just going to replace them come spring. But I didn’t want to miss out on the fun and figured I’d be ok to get one last ride in.

So, as I said, it was just total mud. I rode for a couple hours and laid my bike down in the mud probably 10 times. The tires were way too shot for the conditions and my bike just didn’t want to stay upright. The last time I laid it down, I landed in this huge mud puddle and was soaked head to toe. The mud also gummed up my throttle, so when I’d twist it, it was kind of sticking open at times. So I said enough is enough and decided I better call it a day.

I was headed back to where we parked with a couple of friends. My buddy was out in front of me and kept “roosting” me (spinning your back tire to kick mud/dirt up at the guy behind you). So I rode past him and decided to return the favor. I roosted him a couple times...

And the last time I did it, I suddenly hit this small dry patch of dirt (probably the only dry patch of ground the entire damn day...) and instead of spinning, my tire gripped the dirt. It shot my dirt bike up into the air, kind of cartwheeling out from under me. I actually landed on my feet. It really wasn’t even a bad spill, but...

I was wearing these riding boots that had this steel “L” insert in the boot to protect your foot/ankle etc. from breaking. My feet planted and sunk into the mud and because those boots wouldn’t allow my foot to bend back, it totally blew out my knee.

In hindsight I’d have been much better  of wearing those boots and just breaking my damn ankle/foot....

What ended up happening is my knee bent 90 degrees in the wrong direction (it bent straight forward and off to the left as well)

Oh man.... I have NEVER felt pain like that in my life, and I’ve had some pretty bad injuries from playing all sorts of contact sports, as well as extreme sports (like riding ramps, half pipes, jumps etc). I’ve also raced motocross and crashed off of 70 foot triple jumps. I have a high pain threshold as well.

But I cant even describe the level of pain from that knee injury though.

Eventually a friend helped me up to my feet, and I knew something was seriously wrong. I very gingerly tried to put a tiny bit of weight on my (right) leg and my knee bent straight to the left, hitting my left leg. Obviously, your knee is not supposed to be able to bend that way.

My co-worker drove me to the hospital. By the time I got there and they cut my pant leg off, my knee was the size of a balloon. It was some tiny country hospital. They kept me for a while, gave me a bunch of IV pain meds (which did nothing for the pain, or so I thought until I woke up the next morning when they had worn off...) and told me to go to my local hospital in the morning.

I went to the hospital the next morning, and because of the severity they ended up calling in one of the doctors that does surgeries for UB football and even some Bills players. He had to drain the fluid off my knee because it was so swollen it looked ready to pop. This doctor told me that he had never drained that much fluid from anyone knee before.

About a week or two later when the swelling had finally started to go down, I was able to get an MRI. I tore my MCL, my ACL (grade 3 which is the worst kind) and I ripped a big chunk of my meniscus (padding between the knee bones) which also chipped off a good size chunk of my knee bone with it.

Needless to say my knee has never been the same. That injury changed my life in multiple ways.

Oh man... and then the rehab was just brutal. I was laid up on the couch for well over 6 months and it was damn near a year before I was able to even start walking again. I almost had to learn to walk on the leg all over again.

Because I was only in my 20’s at the time, the doctor wanted me to regain flexibility in my knee before surgery (which took over a year). I could only bend my knee about 10-15 degrees because of the injury and then all of the scar tissue that formed (which is Extremely painful) .

The physical therapy was legit torture. They would have me lay on my stomach and they would try to bend my knee toward my butt. Because it wouldn’t bend, the therapist would have to put all his body weight on my knee. I would literally scream in pain from that. It gives me chills just thinking about it....

I knocked My front two teeth right out skating... They scooped them right up off the ice, put them in a Dixie Cup & on ice and called My Father.  Father rushed Me to dentist and they jammed them back in.  Teeth totally intact, lasted 22 years. Had to have root canals earlier.  Gotta bridge now.  I looked like Bobby Orr smiling when I knocked them out.  And if Bridge ever comes off will look the same again! This was like 1980.

Oh... Also got two sets of stitches in succession.  The day one set came out... I got another set. Playing in the fields by our house.

yup, mini and dirt-bikes badly hurt a few friends growing up, one destroyed his ankle bone, limping from 9 to 53 currently

a few years ago i sprained my foot and after the weekend, the bruising seemed dire, so i  went to the doc and he said i broke it

offered me 8 types of opiates to deal with it, but i wasn't in pain,

when x-rayed they said they couldn't tell me the result but if the pain was too much then go to emerge with this CD of my x-ray, but pain wasn't the problem

thank goodness for air casts, one of the most practical developments over plaster casting and grossly impeding movement....

i put the xray up on the office overhead screen and we agreed that this couldn't have been the foot of a human, maybe some kind of risen primate, and the fracture was clear for all to see

my dentist's root canal work didn't end the pain so i was off to an endodontist

two shots on the outside gum, two on the inside, and one in the roof of the mouth (that is the worst...)

i usually don't want freezing for fillings unless 100% necessary, so i guess my dentist advised i was a tough cookie in the chair  :(

one assistant held my head down and the other held my mouth open with a hook and the doc sawed out the bone needed to get to the problem, many stitches were required, quite the sound and smell for that procedure

i took a taxi home and when i woke up wondered what the strange smell was, turns out the burnt bone dust had collected on my dark t-shirt

things were much better after that and no tooth probs for 15 years now

Got a concussion in middle school that was rough for a few days. Just felt so weak and woozy for days. Not fun

Edit: Thought of one more. I had an ulcer on my left cornea. Was a result of wearing contacts. Everyone has bacteria in their eyes to fight foreign objects (contacts being one of them) and mine over attacked them and ended up attacking my cornea. One morning I woke and couldnt open my eye it was so crusted over. After washing it for 20 mins was finally able to open it to excruciating pain. Went to the eye doctor and had to wear special sunglasses while they figured out what to do. They flushed it out and took some pictures and saw all the scaring. The doctor said I could never wear contacts again or risk going blind. I was 20 at the time so that freaked me out.

Tore my PCL while backpedaling in HS football. Tried to play on it and tore my MCL in the same knee

Tore same MCL hiking, sprained the the other one walking down the hill to go to the doctor. Having two injured MCLs is a bad time

Tore my tricep doing something stupid while drinking. I was so drunk that I didnt feel any pain, but knew immediately it was torn. Lifting my arm above my head was so painful. I was working for the NPS at the time, so I had to haul heavy bags all over the place. Was a rough few weeks

Broke my pinky toe a few years ago playing volleyball. I, of course, didnt have insurance at the time. Called my buddy who is a doctor and his exact quote "Thats gonna suck for a few weeks" He was right, mostly annoying but difficult to walk and sleep

i think i just don't remember the pain to be honest.   Now stubbing my toe kicking a vaccum cleaner this past may was ungodly painful.

Ended up losing a big toe nail, joker turned black, then i would pull on it until finally it cracked loose and i could cut it off to where it wasn't totally dead.    That was painful.   Vaccum was fine

My heart when my grandmother (Mimi) died in the early morning of the day I graduated high school.  My parents never told me until the next day and they put on incredible game faces so my special day wouldn't be affected.

I just have to ask.  How far does it bend now?

My heart when my grandmother (Mimi) died in the early morning of the day I graduated high school.  My parents never told me until the next day and they put on incredible game faces so my special day wouldn't be affected.

You kitty

  my grandparents passed a long time ago, well before my teens

What was the worst pain you guys have felt? Has anyone ever broken any bones or worse like concussions or other organ injuries or major surgeries you have ever had? My Dad just went through Prostate surgery and Bladder surgery. He said it was painful but doing great now. Anyone have any stories?

Worst pain? Ever heard of pitocin? Pit pains are the worst pain I ever experienced - 12 hours worth!

(And I am speaking as someone who has an eye anesthetic wear off after 15 minutes, and had my eyeball continue to be burned with a laser for an additional 13 minutes after that. That would be my second worst pain.)

i've read that shoulder pain is one of the worst, sleep is impossible, i'm often in physio or massage to maintain a balance

since i have it, it sucks, but i don't consider it to be all that bad, it doesn't restrict mobility

Yes, overall no mobility issues, but still some residual reminders when you "reach your limit."
