Not So Fast on a Huge Deal for Kirk Cousins says Andrew Brandt

Jets fans will burn down MetLife stadium if Bowles survives another year without making playoffs.  Not an ideal situation for a guy who supposedly has a lot of options.  I'd take Cousins if he signs for something in Garropolo's ballpark.  $28m per year.  You're not getting a decent starter on free agency market under $20m per year.  Cost to move up in draft will be prohibitive.  I'll take above average QB play from Cousins plus all my draft picks over gambling as much as three 1st round picks on potential greatness.

What? Bowles had that team playing hard last season. The fans only complaint about coaching should have been about him ruining the tank that they had set up.

I’m so sick of hearing about him. You would think he’s actually done something. I can’t wait until he finally officially signs with Denver so he can go away.

He beat out RG3 and lost out to Alex Smith - That’s his resume headline and the floor and ceiling of his abilities respectively.

You think he's gonna get more than 4 years of no playoffs in New York?  Bowles is coming off back-to-back 5-11 seasons following choking away a playoff bid to Rex's Bills.  He's gone if they don't make playoffs.

This is click bait. Cousins is going to get P A I D and everyone knows it. The only debate is if he is worth what he is going to get.

It's not like Minnesota would offer him $5 million a year for a shot at winning while the Jets offer up $30 million a year to be...well a Jet.

He will get paid huge by whomever lands him. I do believe if a team can offer a better shot to win he might take slightly less...but any way you slice it he's getting a ridiculous contract from someone.

Cousins has very solid numbers and will be a top 10 quarterback for years to come. I hate to say it but the $60 million first year deal actually sounds pretty wise. Get a hug chunk of the deal out of the way so the Jets could build around him by signing their own FA as they need too. Cousins could be a really good fit for the Jets.

If they get Cousins maybe, if they draft a rookie I think he is safe for another year. The Jets roster was supposed to be one of the worst ever assembled and they competed week in and week out. They came a heck of a lot closer to beating the Pats than the Bills did.

Agree. If they go rookie then anything around 5 wins again and Bowles is safe.  If he gets a rookie and wins 1 to 3 games only then he is in trouble. If he gets Cousins he needs to be .500 or better.

Andrew Brandt is just going "against the grain" to get clicks on his article.

Is he going to issue a retraction or write a piece admitting he was wrong when Kirk Cousins becomes one of highest (if not the highest) paid player in NFL history?

There are absolutely no signs or indications that Cousins won't get offered a huge deal.

Journalism is truly dead.

This concept isn't that far fetched.  I posted similar a while ago.

Cheaper options (Keenum, possibly Foles) may be available and every team that has a high pick and needs a QB will likely draft their next starter.  That leaves a shriveled market for Cousins.  If Denver is his only real option (unless the Jets lose their minds), then all of Cousins's leverage is gone.

....strange how the "franchise QB" is highly coveted here and elsewhere......seem to be far and few between, yet Cousins' jersey apparently says "FRANCHISE QB" on the back.....sure it is Boy Danny Snyder and his gang, but Bruce Allen was a pretty well respected guy in TB (his old man was George, not too bad of a football guy)....so why if the Deadskins have this rare specimen are they so willing to part with it?........sure isn't the money....Snyder throws money and picks around like a drunken sailor....sure doesn't make a helluva lot of sense to me........

Cousins isn't happy with the skins.

They lowballed the crap out of him last year, and when he rejected, they threw the franchise on him, against his wishes, then slammed him publicly.

That punched his ticket out the door.

My take is Denver went 5-11 last in the division last year with a first-year defensive minded HC who was almost fired at the end of the season. Elway realized he had given him bad QB's to work with so I think he is giving him another year to see what happens with an upgrade at QB.

Like Cleveland and the Jets, I feel Denver is more than a QB away from taking the AFC West as they face an improved Charger team 9-7, the Chiefs and the Raiders who just hired Gruden. Denver HC fired his OC Mike McCoy during the season (week 10)and replaced him with their QB coach in Bill Musgrave who is not an upgrade in my view.

Denver has a decent receiver corps and but their offensive line is bad and their vaunted defense was 22nd in points allowed last year. (#3 in yards).

I feel a quality QB like Cousins will want to know what he is stepping into when he goes to a team and Denver just has so much uncertainty.

The heart of Denver's WR corps is talented, but old.  And their OL is bad.  You're durn straight I'm Cousins, I want to know the plan there.

I don't know enough about Musgrave - but I think you could argue at least the O didn't get worse after McCoy got the boot.  Word I heard was that he was doing the Roman thing, prepping and insisting on practicing 30+ plays every week, then only running 1/3 of them in a game, and Musgrave had orders to simplify.

I can't argue with your take on the Jets being uncertain, I just feel Denver has a better D.  You put your finger on it in what you say - whenever a team is stout at giving up yards and 1st downs, but bad at giving up points, ask why.  In the case of Denver, I believe it was points off turnovers.

If I'm Cousins, my first choice is the Vikes if they're interested, but I would certainly give Denver a careful listen and if I like their sales pitch, I'd put them over the Jets.
