You don't want to lose him to another team if he was being poached. Bills don't have another Watt on the schedule. Mulligan is expendable now, especially after Mills looked decent.. Â That's my guess too. I didn't see Mulligan more than an extra OL, so why not just put in the real tackle eligible OL instead of Mulligan? Apparently they fell asleep in film study and didn't realize mulligan isn't the go-to guy on a crucial game winning TD. But anyone could have run that route. It couldn't have been any worse than that. Â Possibly. But who has a better Ping Pong game? Â I am thinking of Mulligan, who was so overmatched that he held every part of Clowney's body, before then holding his neck and pulling him to the ground. That was the play where TT completed a great pass over the middle to Sammy, but it was called back for a hold. Kelly the Dog Posted December 8, 2015 Share Posted December 8, 2015 (edited) For those unfamiliar with the process, when a player is on a team's practice squad and another team is interested in signing him and putting him on their active 53 man roster, which they would have to do, they notify the player's agent and make him a contract offer as if a FA. Â The agent then tells the player as well as the team he is on. Like in this case they would notify Whaley about the contract. If the player wants to stay on the Bills if the money is similar, the Bills can then do what they did with O'Leary, sign him to the active 53. It would always be the player's choice which team he wants to play for. They may even have to up the ante a little depending on how much the player likes it there and how much chance there is on the new team to play. Â Teams will often "sniff" around on a player and talk to his agent about what are the chances. Since they are practice squad this would not be tampering of any kind. It's possible that the Bills knew of this sniffing around and didn't even want to get to the chance that a formal offer and contract had been made so they activated OLeary to the 53 as a preemptive strike. Â And in this scenario it wouldn't be the player's choice unless he didn't want to risk being on any team. It's a substantial raise in pay. Â True that it's a remote possibility, but since they cover punts, there's always the chance, and I really don't want to be in a situation where XPs, FGs, and punts aren't an option.
