Donald Trump is the response to a bullying culture

by Glenn Reynolds

Abusive political correctness drives voters into the impolitic billionaire's loud embrace

Back in February, analyzing Donald Trumps appeal,David Gelernter wrote: Political correctness. Trump hasn't made it a campaign theme exactly, but he mentions it often with angry disgust. Reporters, pundits, and the other candidates treat it as a sideshow, a handy way for Trump (King Kong Jr.) to smack down the pitiful airplanes that attack him as he bestrides his mighty tower, roaring.

But the analysts have it exactly backward. Political correctness is the biggest issue facing America today. Even Trump has just barely faced up to it. The ironic name disguises the real nature of this force, which ought to be called invasive leftism or thought-police liberalism or metastasized progressivism. The old-time American mainstream, working- and middle-class white males and their families, is mad as hell about political correctness and the havoc it has wreaked for 40 years havoc made worse by the flat refusal of most serious Republicans to confront it.

{snip}

Political correctness is not, as some might claim, just an effort to encourage niceness. As Gelernter notes, its an effort to control people. Like the Newspeak inGeorge Orwells 1984, the goal is to make it impossible for people to speak, or even think, unapproved thoughts.

5]Of course, by limiting what people can think and say, political correctness has hollowed out Americas universities, cheapened and distorted its politics, and served (and this last is entirely intentional) to make those who favor traditional American values like free speech feel marginalized and at risk. (I saw someone on Twitter talking about America-shaming last week, and that term fits pretty well.) But as leftists like to say, you cant make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.

5]

5]Almost as irritating to a lot of people, though, is the extent to which self-described conservative politicians, pundits and media organs have gone along. Part of this is because PC is often misleadingly sold as politeness, and elite American conservatives are suckers for etiquette. Part of it is because those conservative leaders move in an upper-middle-class environment where academic norms govern everyone, including them.

5]

5]But when respectable people wont talk about things that a lot of voters care about, the less-respectable will eventually rise to meet the need. Thats what Trumps doing. And a lot of people are cheering him on not so much because theyre fans of Trump personally as because theyre happy to see someone finally stand up to the PC bullies.

5]

5]Will electing Trump solve all the nations problems? Nope. But, as mentioned above, it will show that more than half the country rejects the culture of political correctness, and the political class that let it take over. And for many people, thats reason enough.

I think this is a very good analysis

No it's the 40% of the primary voters who want to send a big FU over the last 7 years. It's a pure payback and not rational. But you reap what you sow

Payback for what? The hot mess of 2016 with all the gays married and T people peeing who knows where and none of our troops coming home in boxes and a relatively good economy or the hot mess of 2008 where we were in 2 unfounded wars, our economy was in free fall, unemployment was 10 percent plus, the auto industry was bankrupt?

Payback for millions LESS iillegal immagrants than the Bush years, a lower yearly deficit?

You say it is not rational....do you mean that this "payback" is an unfounded concept?

Obama's economic boasts go boom — that is, bust! http://washex.am/24oNDMm

The late Obama-era economy produces statistics that most people probably find puzzling.

The headline unemployment rate, now at 4.7 percent, might suggest we were back in the dot-com boom of 1999. But no one feels the energy or optimism of that era.

The stock market doesn't look the same either; it's a bit down from where it was 18 months ago. And growth has been dismal — an annualized 0.8 percent in the first quarter, following 1.4 percent in the fourth quarter before that.

Job creation numbers have been mostly respectable, usually approaching or exceeding 200,000 a month. So Friday's report, of only 38,000 new jobs in May, was a gut punch.

That number would leave an average major league baseball stadium with many seats to spare on game day. It was the worst jobs report since the labor market bottomed out in 2010 after the Great Recession.

Just to rub it in, estimates for job creation in March and April were revised down by a combined 59,000. If George W. Bush were president, you'd be hearing about an economic slowdown.

How many innocent brown people have our drones and bombs killed? I guess they don't count.

I used to be a Democrat too, but that was well before they openly embraced socialist principles in favor of traditional American values. I don't hold it against anybody who was a Democrat at one time if they bail on the party. The more, the merrier I say.

My point being that the award in question had nothing at all to do with Trump's views on race or immigration. It was a chance photo taken of 100 honorees, and is being circulated today because of Ali's death. It's nonsense, and has no place in a 2016 political discussion.

I respectfully disagree.

My point is that Mr. Trump has been in the public eye for decades.

As Tom has pointed out there are other times when Mr. Trump has met with the Champ, has well as thousands of other examples of African American celebrities and businessmen and women meeting and dealing with the Donald.

Surely they are not all hypocrites ?

Donald Trump's experiences in his adult life are part of the 2016 political discussion .....as are Hillary's.............(and Bernie)

(Nit) picking that this is only one chance meeting is a very narrow interpretation of what can be contributed to the thread.

Sorry.
