Rex calling out Duke Williams?

@JoeBuscaglia: Well, there's one of 4 players Rex could be talking about here, and he's praised Butler & Rambo. Likely Duke Williams http://t.co/T08jDmgyqY

No wonder he was with the 3s in TC. Too much time tweeting porn stars and not enough time in the playbook. He was horrible yesterday. Call up Meeks if AW is out this week and make DW inactive.

Clearly referring to Duke not having a clue that he was in man coverage on Gronk on his TD. I think that's inexcusable.

Honestly though, why is he even on the field in that situation? When has he ever shown that he can cover anyone, let alone the best TE in the NFL?

Just one example of Rex's poor defensive game planning yesterday.

yea Bradham went nuts on Duke on that Gronk TD. obviously expecting him to pick up the coverage. i felt bad for Duke at the time because i don't think teammates should go after each other that much on the field but if he didn't do his job then i could see why

I think I saw Gilmore yell at him once too

As did Gilmore.

I typically don't put a lot of stock into one defender yelling at another, but when both guys turn and scream at him simultaneously, they clearly both expected him to be in that spot.

Same play as Bradham's fit.

This...has the size and speed combo to match up with him.

How we didn't bump Gronk off the line on every play, I'll never know. The amount of times they'd replay his route and he'd run right past Lawson or Hughes untouched was driving me nuts...move over six inches and put a shoulder into him!

Did that TD pass occur on the drive in which Aaron Williams was benched? He needed to be benched, but wow, there's a price you pay when you do that.

I cant understand this either. We all knew they had to do it. Every dummy on ESPN and even TBN knew they had to do it. And yet, they didnt do it. At all. Infuriating.

And it's not like Rex isnt used to going up against the Pats either. The blueprint on how to beat them is available and well known. Its one thing if you try that blueprint and just dont execute. We werent even close.

i think it was after AW got hurt

I believe it was after he was benched, and it was definitely before he got hurt (that came on Edelman's 2nd TD, which was their 4th of the day).

it makes me want to watch the Pats the rest of the season to see what other teams do against Gronk.

Almost.

I don't know if I buy this quote from Rex. Joe Buscaglia reported it and he's a hack. Dude didn't even play football himself.

Ooh, you almost got me.

Those were some harsh words from Rex.

But at least it wasn't the worst PI in history of NFL.

On that play, the Pats ran the exact same formation and shift as they did against Pitt, but in the Pitt game Gronk broke toward the sideline and caught the td in the corner. That's what Gilmore was covering (sensibly so). Gronk broke inside this time, and obviously someone else has to cover the inside. That didn't happen.

Maybe they know Duke doesn't spend time in the film room enough, then tells them "I got it" when they ask if he knows his assignments, then in games routinely blows them. That would piss me off too...

Ahhh,... while I appreciate his effort, Hughes was lucky he wasn't called for Pass Interference on that play. He has no business being sent downfield trying to cover Gronkowski... they need to rethink that

was he lucky because he is Hughes and it didn't get called, or because you thought it was PI? Didn't look like PI to me... Edited by YoloinOhio

This pretty much confirms that Duke Williams screwed up. From Belichick's interview: http://www.patriots.com/news/2015/09/21/bill-belichick-conference-call-transcript-921.

Q: The touchdown to Rob Gronkowski looked similar to the formation we saw last week. What did you see on that play?Read

BB: I'm not sure exactly what happened on their end. It looked like they were trying to go three-on-two over there to the slot side and they didn't get it, and Rob got inside. The rest of the game they did go three-on-two on that. It's probably what they were trying to do on that play, but they did go three-on-two, and we ended up a couple times going back to the other side to Scott Chandler, where the one-on-one matchup was. But we unfortunately didn't hit it. But they went three-on-two on those plays as well over to the slot side. So, I think that's what they were trying to do, but Rob got inside on it and Tom [brady] hit him. It was a pretty easy touchdown. That's what it looked like to me.
