Head Coach Candidate: Bill Cowher

I was thinking about this earlier, since most coaches like to work with guys they know, who would be the logical choices for OC? Buffalo has fired two of them as head coaches, malarkey and chan, so they're out.

And if Schwartz just refuses and leave, I really don't want to hire Jim Haslett as our DC

My dream staff is Cowher, Gailey, and Schwartz.

Cowher is already used to giving the DC his space, as he did with LeBeau. I dont think it would be that tough to get Gailey back, especially if Nix is still around at all. I also think it would instantly help our OL, we could re-sign Spiller cheap and expect production, and Id be interested to see how he would work with EJ.

A guy can dream...

edit: Could we get away with Cowher, Reich as OC/AsstHC, and Schwartz?

Oh, dear lord in heaven, please stop with the Cowher nonsense. What's next? Bring back Levy?

Cowher is only 57 years old and has a very long and impressive history of success--with marginal QBing I might add. He was always innovative, while still being a nuts-and-bolts old school HC. We'd be foolish to not consider Cowher if he would consider the job. The ONLY concern I have is is absence from the NFL for a few years. If he really wants to get back, I don't think he should be waiting around much longer.

I think its just about the perfect time for him to come back.

He left in 2007 to be with his family and take care of his wife. She lived for 3 more years before passing in 2010. It has now been 4 years since then, which I think is a respectable time to reset and get your head back. The daughters are now all married and out on their own. 57 is definitely not too old to make a comeback.

Make it happen, Terry. Blank check.

Cowher will not be a Bills HC. He said last year it would be highly unlikely he returns to coaching.

People say all sorts of things all the time. I think it is unlikely as well, but if I were Pegula, Cowher would be my first plan and Id be selling it to him hard. Make it the right situation for him.

LAST year, in January. Right.

In June he said this:

He tells the newspaper on Tuesday the challenge of returning to coaching after a long layoff is motivation for him to come back.

http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/bill-cowher-thinks-he-will-return-to-nfl-someday-010813

I believe he made similar statements since then. But I don't feel like looking further.

Cowher is a proven leader. I would not be disappointed at all. He also is the kind of guy for whom Schwartz presumably would be willing to work - as opposed to some unproven coordinator or college HC.

Cowher also would attract FAs.

Cowher would be my number 1 choice.

He 's a winner. He had a lot of good teams with qbs like Neil O'Donnell and Kordell Stewart.

He will hire a good staff. No more Geroge Edwardses or Nate Hacketts. The best coaches will want to work for him. He'll be a draw for FAs as well.

I suspect Pegulas are going to at least talk to him and think they probably have.

Football changes sure, but not that much. It's still blocking and tackling and execution and getting the best out of your guys.

Dick Vermiel took the Eagles to the Super Bowl in 1980 and then retired due to "burnout". 17 years later in 1997 he became coach of the Rams. and won the Super Bowl in 1999 at 63 years of age. I don't see why Bill can't do this too.

I think this is gonna happen.

To all the Bills fans thinking that old school doesn't work need to direct their eyes at this years 12-4 Dallas Cowboys who are doing it the old way by building a big, powerful O line and pounding the rock. They have a RB who just broke Emmett Smith's rushing record in a season, and are giving QB Tony Romo ample time to throw. So its not just a passing league, and never has been. 476 passing attempts vs 507 rushing attempts.

RB DeMarco Murray 392 attempts, 1845 yards, 13 TD's. 57 receptions for 416 yards. That Cowboy offense is 5th in points, 7th in yards.

The Steelers have had Big Ben for years and only recently with Le'Veon Bell have they become a force, Bell is very much in the mold of Thurman Thomas as he is about 75% of that Pittsburgh offense. 290 rushing attempts with 1361 yards, 8 TD's, and where he is really different is 83 receptions for 854 yards 3 TD's is better then a lot of WR's.

Bill Cowher AKA "The Chin" probably won't take the Bills job because he wants a team with an established good QB already on the roster. Although all the talent on the defense might be enough to lure him from the broadcast booth.

This man isn't a fossil, as he watches a ton of game film every week to keep up with the current offenses, and defenses so he can accurately report on what he is looking at on game day. Let me remind everyone that Dick Vermeil spent 14 years in the broadcast booth after taking the Eagles to a SB, and then joined the St Louis Rams as a HC and won a SB. After the Rams he went to KC and had a 13-3 season with them. He did this at 61, Marv Levy was also 61 when he joined the Bills.

What Bill Cowher would bring with him is a wealth of experience in knowing what schemes he wants to run, and who he wants to run them. He will probably keep Jim Schwartz as DC, and hire an NFL experienced offensive coordinator. He would never hire a Nathaniel Hackett. He would build a team Bills fans would cherish with a power run game, and stout defense. Lets not forget how many seasons of playoff teams Cowher had in Pittsburgh with complete bums at QB.

Bill Cowher won a power struggle in Pittsburgh with Tom Donahoe over player talent, so the man knows what he is looking at on the field and would never even allow a player like Colin Brown to take the field in a Bills Uni. Bill Cowher might be enough of a force in the HC / FO to keep Whaley and have great drafts.

No more inexperienced college puke assistants like Gailey & Marrone hired please.

I don't agree with you on Cowher at all, he had so much talent, especially on D, and IMO actually underachieved with it despite winning a Super Bowl, if he's as good as everyone here thinks then he should have won two or maybe even three in 15 years. Like Elway as a player, he won in his last season.

Tomlin's took the same team and won one two seasons later and had better Ds with essentially the same talent. Hiring Cowher, especially after being out of the league for 9 years now, would be a grave mistake.

Where I do agree with you, in no small matter or way, is this notion that all you need is a QB and D to win the SB and be a great and competitive team. It seems to have gone unnoticed that Seattle's had Lynch, SF has had Gore, Baltimore when they've been good enough to upset playoff teams has had Rice and a good running game otherwise. GB has Lacy. Dallas has Murray. NE's RBs haven't been more than average for years, but BB seems to be able to get enough from them in RBBC.

A great rushing game is just as important today for balance.

What has seemingly gone entirely unnoticed by Bills fans is that our rushing defense has sucked over the last 10 games, as in near bottom-dwelling status sucked. I have no idea why Schwartz is getting all this credit. Once again we overemphasized our pass D, which while leading the league in sacks had fewer sacks than last season's 6-10 campaign.

The difference between last season and this one is three wins by 3 points or less (Chicago, Detroit, Minn) rather than 3 losses by 3 points or less. Chicago put up more yardage than any other team against us this season, we were lucky to have beaten them. Detroit was missing almost their entire skill position lineup. Who doesn't think that was a factor alongside 3 MFGs by them? Minny at home? We hit on a 4th-and-long with astronimical odds to pull that one out of our ass.

That's the thin veil between 6-10 and 9-7. This notion that we're improving by leaps and bounds is overstated.

Getting back to your point, we lost games to the following teams that ran on us and won because of that: Denver (133), Oakland (140), KC (127), and Miami (125). All of the RBs that faced us averaged over their per-game averages in those games for yards and ypc except for CJ Anderson who had 3 rushing TDs.

Miller and Charles had no trouble running against us for 5.7 and 6.6 yards-per-carry, McFadden averaged 7 ypc, and rookie Jwan Thompson and 2nd-year Latavius Murray did the rest of the damage by posting average or better rushing numbers. This isn't good but everyone's overlooking it.

So again, to your point, we lost those games not because of their passing games (207, 205, 173, 151) but because of their rushing games. But isn't Schwartz supposed to be a great run-oriented DC? Well, we allow about 130 rushing ypg over our last 10 games. That's piss poor.

On our offensive side, have we ever had a worse RB situation? Fans thinking that Spiller's anymore than a waste of time seem to prefer living in a delusional state. He's beyond worthless because he'll give you absolutely nothing in three or four games while stringing you out thinking that if he has all the space he needs he can score a TD. Which player can't when they have all the space that they need. We've rarely seen CJ outrun anyone, watch his replays.

Jackson's finished. Brown's a poor-man's Spiller, and Dixon is and always has been a short-yardage specialist. Sure, keep him around for goal-line stuff but he's no 3-down RB.

Love Jackson, don't get me wrong, but he's done. Keep him around for as long as he can play out of respect, but he cannot be counted on.

So we need a top-shelf RB, a QB that can play at all, some OL help, can't seem to stop the run on D with ALL that talent up front, which is mind boggling. We didn't even play very many of the best and top running teams OR RBs in the league and we still struggled to stop the run in weeks 7-17. It's unbelievable. Meanwhile everyone's talking about how great this D is. We're going to be taking a drastic drop back to earth next season I think.

RBs don't seem to be taken very high so maybe Duke Johnson will be available. Who knows. Not that if he is I'd expect dunderhead Whaley to select him. No, I expect another WR or some QB slated for round 3 or 4 instead leaving us to discuss why three players drafted within the 10 picks after that are all making the Pro Bowl two years later.

I haven't read the whole thread but am on record as saying that I do not want Cowher as the head coach. I think that the modern game requires so much more than motivation and beating your man one on one. The game is won and lost before the ball is snapped as much as after. That wasn't the case a decade ago.

With that being said I would be 100% on board with Cowher filling the role that Polian was going to fill. He knows a winning organization and would lend instant credibility to the Bills. He will stop the snowballing negativity of the last week. I would think that Cowher would be a Whaley guy. Whaley was Kevin Colbert's right hand man. Colbert and Cowher worked together in Pittsburgh.

Im game, we'd be the only team in the NFL with a head coach who wears mascara and stars in rock videos.

As for him leaving his cushy job I highly doubt it .

****, is he available?

I'm not totally sold on the idea that Cowher would be able to adapt to the new NFL. Lots of folks on this thread have debated that point, and there's not much to add.

But what's indisputable is that Cowher brings a lot of positive attributes, unique among the candidates, to the table. First among them is the kind of star power that allows you your pick among assistants. As an example - folks are rightly concerned that Schwartz would chafe at working for a Gase or a Reich. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have any problem working for Cowher. And that's a massive advantage.

I'm not at all sure that he'll ever coach again. But I do think that he'd consider this job, working with Whaley and with Terry-sized money, if he was ever thinking about coming back.

I love this argument. He only won 1 Super Bowl and should have won more according to TaskersGhost so he's not good enough for us who have not been to the playoffs for 15 years :w00t:

Cowher is quoted today as saying he is happy at CBS and doesn't want to return to coaching at the moment. What about Gus Malzahn...a really innovative guy on offense and a success in college as a HC?

Its hard to get big time college coaches to hop over to the NFL. The best college coaches make very close if not more than the highest paid NFL coaches. Also College coaches get more control than pro-coaches. If you are going to get a college guy I think you are looking at getting just under a top tier guy.
