Fred Jackson has been a great player for the Bills, but it was painfully obvious this season---especially after he came back from the groin injury---that he has a lost at least two steps and that exposes him to more hits than in the past. At 34, he is only going to deteriorate and be more injury prone if he continues to play. If he comes back, his role is as a third down, pass-blocking specialists at best. I was hoping that he would gracefully retire as a player and be brought back as a RB coach. If we try to go into the season with him as our lead back, we are going to be in big trouble.
Beyond Jackson, I think Rivers is a likely roster casualty along with Urbik and Pears. Williams' future depends upon his health--he didn't play enough to really gauge his ability last season. I suspect Spikes (provided he is realistic in salary expectations) and Lawson will find a place in Ryan's defensive scheme. Chandler will be back, but hopefully we find a more talented receiver to split snaps at TE with him.
Gay is a question mark, but his kickoffs certainly contributed to the strong special teams play last year and he just might be kept around. However, I think we will bring in some free agent options to challenge for the punting job.
