How many of the core ST Aces do they keep?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Ed_Formerly_of_Roch's topic in The Stadium Wall
That's rather misleading as pretty certain Bass could have kicked it through the end zone likely every week except maybe the Monday night against NE I wouldn't make kicking through the endzone the strategy for the entire season. But would do it the first 5 or 6 weeks. Let guys like Spector, Blackshear, and Hodgins get some experience, after that I'd trust them or if they still aren't getting it, then scan the waiver wire for some players with a fair amount of ST experience which likely isn't too hard to find. I would keep Kumerow as he does on occasion play some offensive plays. Bills were I believe 1st or 2nd in number of plays run with 3 and 4 WR. With using that many WR, I'd keep 7 on the 53, but likely the last one is inactive on game days. A this point, that would be Hodgins, but use him all week in practice on ST. If/when he gets to the point, he's as good as Kumerow, then he's active and Kumerow sits. Also looking beyond this year, with a year under his belt, could see by next year they keep Hodgins over Kumerow. The one I have the most issue with is Jones as they rarely ever used him as a RB where as Kumerow does play on occasion. I'd let Jones and Johnson go and keep Blackshear and again he works on ST. Barring injury he too isn't active on Sundays. Likely Johnson could slip to PS. Keeping Jones to me is a double wammy in particular this year. Look at last year, they'd have Jones and 2 RB active on game days. If they do that again, then either Singletary, Moss, or Cook is sitting. I think 1 game last season they had Singletary, Moss, and Yeldon active. However would be surprised if they did that again though this season as all three offer a unique style of play. But if you now have all three active, plus Jones, that's 4. Now add 2 QB's, 8 OL, that likely only leaves you 8 total between TE, FB, and WR as that adds up to 22. Throw another 22 on defense and 3 true ST adds up to 47. Or you're shorting the defense. A total of 8 between TE, FB, and WR seems way to low for a pass heavy team like the Bills. Whether you put Blackshear on the 53 man roster or not, this issue still exists if they keep Jones. I don't have as much issue with Matakevich as with Smith being out the first 6 weeks and White starting out on IR, they can still keep 6 LB's one of them being Spector and not really cutting someone who's looked good. -

True about Smith, that may be Spectors break onto roster. I'm more leaning towards them keeping Hodgins and Kumerow. Might come down to a 7th WR or 3 TE's. Just read an article in the Athletic. Based on who played when first series with Allen, TE's were Morris Sweeny and Gilliam. Howard only played with 2nd team. His thinking is they may be trying to trade Howard as not worth cutting him as salary is almost completely guaranteed. But still think when you add that Gilliam can play some TE, think you only need to keep two plus him. I'm torn on Blackshear, he did look very good, but was against 3rd stringers. Am worried about him making it to PS, but every year there are a couple guys like that, everyone think will be grabbed by another team, but never are. Think it will come down to Blackshear or Jones. -

Think Blackshear would be the 4th. Doubt they'd keep Johnson over him as better chance they can sneak Johnson to the PS. Plus Blackshear saves them money -

Agree so keep the guy Kumerow who does play all ST. IMO they will keep both have 7 WR, but because Hodgins doesn't play much of any ST he will be inactive on game days and Kumerow will play No 3rd round pick T Bernard replace Klein. Dodson has also shown to be able to play LB and he'll be 1st one in to play. If Smith makes team after games 6, he'd be 2nd one in or maybe by then Bernard will have clearly passed him on depth chart Really when, the only times I recall seeing Matakevich play was either in a couple of blow outs or may have been a time when both Edmunds and Milano were hurt. But don't recall him playing very well actually. Think you may be mixing him up with Klein who did looked good in spurts. Neither has miller, so not sure that means much. Who are better depth options, Hodgins. He's looked good, but has had issues staying healthy. Believe I read they are starting to have him play ST only starting now, so wouldn't want to count on him over Kumerow at this point. I think if they do play Hodgins on ST this year (or maybe just in practice if he's rarely active) by next season he'd be ready to take Kumerows spot and be a stronger WR option. IMO they will keep 7 WR, both Kumerow and Hodgins, but on game days only dress 6 and Hodgins will be the odd mad out barring injury. I would not get rid of all 3, would keep Kumerow as cheaper than other two and he does play some WR when needed. The other two only played in blow outs. Agree on Neal, think they didn't play as the team knows what they have in them so don't need to show it. Trouble is Beane did too good of a job finding some late round gems so may have to re think who they are and aren't keeping. That's part of my point, if it's the last year anyway, then you'll end up starting over next year. Instead keep a guy like Spector and Bradshear, use them all year on ST, by next season they will be strong players on ST. -
Looking at the Bills roster I'd classify their core aces as : T Jones, J Kumerow, T Matakevich, S Neal, & R Gilliam with Matakevich and Jones the front runners. Next level after those 5 are players like T Dodson, J Johnson, D Hamlin for starters. I do think some core specialists are needed for ST on the roster, don't take getting rid of most lightly. But also think while Matakevich and Jones are the leaders, Kumerow, Neal, and Gilliam have graduated to the point they are ready to have the baton passed to them. Keeping Matakevich and Jones just means you're delaying the inevitable another season, at some point they will be gone and some new inexperienced guys will take their place on ST. But there are enough fairly experienced players left as I named above that their absence may not be missed too much. They are not keeping 5 RB's so if Jones stays Blackshear is cut. Has Blackshear played any ST this training camp? I don't think it's a slam dunk he gets picked up by another team, though he very well may. Posters said the same thing in past years about Duke Williams and another player, (can't recall the name) and they went no where so I'm not close to 100% certain he's gone. Similarly with Matakevich, if he stays Spector goes, though do think he has a better chance at sticking on PS. So do they rip the band aid off and let Matakevich and/or Jones go this year? Really think the time may have come to move on from at least one of them. Also save a fair amount of money by letting one or both of them go. The risk in letting them go is ST play costs us a game, but no guarantee same wouldn't happen if they were here. Keeping them really makes it more of a super Bowl or bust year as potentially you're losing potential first subs in for the 2023 season and basically in the same place as you are now. So many unlucky breaks can happen in one season and this team is built for a more sustained run so don't think putting all your eggs in one basket is the right approach. If you're Tampa with Tom Brady, it's a different story. They have a kicker who can easily reach the end zone on almost all of his kickoffs (as long as the instructions get through to him) and a punter that can boom some long ones. Think I read the Bills punted the 2nd lowest times lat year. As good as their offense is getting 1 to 2 first downs per drive Araiza could easily punt for a touchback. While not ideal as strong as their defense also is, not the worst thing. Not suggesting they should do this all season, but maybe the first few games to play it safe until some of the new guys get well familiar with their ST roles. On returns the worst thing is players taking holding penalties, maybe again early in the season take a knee on kick offs and fair catches on punts. Again with strong offense not terrible starting from the 25, how often even last year did they start in better field position and how often was a run called back for a penalty. Think I've kind of changed my thinking on the ST roster make up. A month ago would have more favored keeping Matakevich and Jones, now think at least one needs to be let go and wouldn't be all that upset if it's both. Time for a changing of the guard so as to keep more of the rookies.

Cut 15 of these players
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Giuseppe Tognarelli's topic in The Stadium Wall
Why they never have before. Agree with most except I'd keep Kumerow over Sweeney or Hodgins. If you're letting Jones go which I'm fine with, don't want to let all your ST aces go. For a team that goes with 3 WR and even some times 4, you don't need 3 TE plus Gilliam who sometimes kind of plays a hybrid TE role. Think too between Sweeney, Kumerow and Blackshear; Sweeney would be safest to get onto the PS You'll also likely keep Lewis to start as good change White starts the year off on IR. Does Blackshear play any ST?? -
Bills -Broncos Post Game Thread Week 2 Preseason
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to muppy's topic in The Stadium Wall
I was kind of thinking the same thing too, but looking at their schedule you always try o avoid playing teams you're playing in the regular season and they are playing NFC west teams this year in addition to their own division. Add onto that not as many west coast teams as teams say east of the Mississippi, likely couldn't find anyone less to play. -

If you go back a couple years you'll likely find other posts that stated the same identical thing except it either had the name Duke Williams or Christian Wade in it instead. Having said that I do tend to agree he could be grabbed, but almost every year there are threads here stating the same about some player, but most often they do make it the PS untouched by other teams. Wouldn't be shocked either if you watch the 3rd and 4th quarter of other teams games you'll find similar performances. -
Yes but other than his first drive he played, he was also surrounded by 2nd and 3rd stringers on his own side. Even on his 1st drive, no Knox, think Diggs came out after about 3 or 4 plays, did Singletery play that drive. So yes he looked good!

Cole Beasleys Buffalo home is for sale

Pretty impressive seeing 3 sets of I beams and columns in the basement. Never saw a house needing that many. On the other hand looking at a couple of the aerial views, the houses surrounding it are tiny in comparison. Typically not good buying a house that is the most expensive in the area. -

Help me understand an OBJ trade
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Behindenemylines's topic in The Stadium Wall
Well I'm not a teacher, but still have a pretty good idea! LOL Maybe that was the reason you were the only person to be able to translate it. Kind of reminds me of the scene from the movie Airplane. "He'll have the fish" -
Also just in case this coming week Aariza were to get hurt, then he goes to IR and they keep Haack. So buys them a small insurance policy for a week or even two more weeks.

So aside from calling it an OBJ trade and not mentioning anything about fitting him under the cap, his post was very clearly written! -
Jordan Palmer - XFL’s Director of QB Development
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall
Lots of QB's look great in college because the overall level of talent around them isn't that good. Likely same thing in XFL. Not that much overall talent so anyone is capable of looking great including QB's. -

Bills Cutdowns (update - down to 80)

Also keeps Ariaza from kicking too much in practice and potentially straining his leg. Can recall in past sometimes bringing in another kicker just so not asking starter to kick too much. -

Antonio Brown will have be in that room too, just ask him. For a long time I've always felt it's too easy for players to make the football HOF and too hard to make the Baseball HOF. -
Good Night / Bad Night - Pre-season game 1
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to GunnerBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
Agree with all your Good Night choices, maybe would add Love in there but was against 3rd stringers for the most part. On the loser part as far as ST penalties go, with little consistency in the unit, not surprising all the penalties. They also did have a couple good KO returns that weren't called back. Do agree on Howard and Crowder part. Run blocking too as was pointed out not even the 2nd string OL. Also Indy started the game with most of their starters. -
Agree with most except Blackshear. Can't see them keeping 4 RB's plus Jones and Gilliam on a team that for the past couple of years only would go with 2 RB on game days. Definitely not wasting a slot for Blackshear. Instead that last slot likely will go to Kumerow. This Blackshear love is kind of funny. Reminds me of the past couple of seasons it was Wade, D Williams, and think there was also a RB named Williams. He did great in the 4th quarter of pre-season games going up against mostly other undrafted players. If White isn't ready week 1, the 7th CB choice becomes and easy one. Looking at the numbers that gives a total of 25 to offense, 2 QB, 2 TE, 9 OL, 4 RB, 1 FB, 7 WR, and 25 to defense 9 DL, 6 LB, 6 CB, 4 S plus 3 specialists. Now the question is how do you get down to 47 on game day. For that drop 1 OL, 1 DL, 1 WR, 1 LB. After that it gets tougher for the last two. Last season they often went with just 1 TE and 3 RB. This year though see that being tough choice as Singletary, Moss, and Cook all have uniquely different strengths. Personally if it were up to me I'd keep all three active and sit Jones but not so sure they will. It often may come to either sitting Howard or Gilliam and maybe a CB?? Or instead it may end up being one of the three REAL RB's if past actions are any indicator, but won't make me happy if that's the choice.
