Top Coach or Top Free Agent

I was listening to the radio and heard a good idea. For 9 years in a league that is based on parity, we haven't made the playoffs. The players have all changed. The coaches have as well, but there is something to say about the quality of the coaches we have. I know they swept us, but does anyone really think Miami is a good team??? They just out coached us.

So my question is would rather spend big bucks on a top coach (Cowher) or get a top free agent (Peppers i believe would be available and fill a major hole). What do you think?

Cowher over Peppers in a heart beat. This team needs a great coach. I actually think our talent is heavily underrated by all of us right now. We are not getting a pass rush without Schobel and we need Hardy to grow into a good receiver (few generally have an impact at that position as a rookie, so there is more hope for him than for Roscoe) and we need a tight end and center, but I think overall the talent on our team is good, and an exceptional head coach is what we need most of all.

Yeah maybe I'm delusional, but I think a good coaching staff is the missing ingredient at this point. Sure there are holes to fill in the roster, but that is always going to be the case. There's simply no excuse for this team not having shown progress this year.

Top free agent for sure. An all star will play despite the weakness off a head coach, see Wade Philips, good players but he is still the son of a Bum.

See: the team we just played.

-Joey Porter? Was outstanding in Pittsburgh when he had a great head coach. Went to the Dolphins who had a schitty coach and did absolutely nothing. Dolphins get a good coach and Porter is in the running for defensive MVP.

-Chad Pennington? Sucked balls, was competing with some guy named Kellen Clemons for the starting gig and was losing, and eventually cut outright by the Jets. Goes to Miami and rips half the league apart.

I could go on with every team in the league who has "all-stars" that can't do schit with a bad head coach.

This team needs an identity/attitude overhaul - from somnambulant to some blue collar!

I don't think I've ever had less respect for a Bills team - and like all long time Bills fans I've lived through absoltely horrible teams over the decades - but I think this is the worst I've ever felt. The absolute last straw was all the whining about the weather the last couple weeks by the players - WTF?!?!? I would honestly give my left nut for Cowher - give him the title of GM as well and total control. Maybe he could even lure LeBeau away as DC. Most important - I F'ing guarantee Cowher would at least bring an attitude where the fans could be proud of the toughness and effort of the players on the field - and I F'ing guarantee players wouldn't be bitching about cold weather under his regime - !@#$ing EMBRACE it. GDamn pussies!

Don't think I've ever been more jealous of a team than watching the Steelers play this year - toughness and will - THAT's what Buffalo teams should be - that's what Buffalo fans DESERVE - I'm so sick of this sh--.

Jealous is a great word. I was born and raised in WNY but lived in the NYC area from 92 through 04. Now I'm back in WNY. When I was there I got the sense of what 'class' was like in sports teams - the NY Giants oozed it. Even when they sucked, they had class and it started at the top. You KNEW they would be back. They were overachievers and got trounced a few years ago but last year showed that their commitment to winning, period, is what the organization is all about. PS my step dad and step brother are from Pittsburgh - ages 55 and 24 respectively. I am openly jealous of their successes. OH and I'm watching the Penguins rock the Sabres right now too.

Cowher underachieved terribly with arguably the best talent in the league.

Why do people think he'd suddenly turn into a good coach here when he was a chronic choke artist with far more talent than the Bills will ever have?

And the only reason DickL ended up back in Pittsburgh is because Billyboy missed the playoffs 4 times in 6 years w/o Coach LeBeau (but with arguably the league's most talented roster) and the Rooney's then forced him to hire Dick LeBeau back.

Of course Dick LeBeau then proceeded to win him a Super Bowl while Bill mugged for the cameras and proclaimed his own greatness as LeBeau worked his ass off to keep Cowher from continuing to make a complete ass of himself on Sundays like he had been for the last 15 years.

The guy is a complete clown and when he comes back for a pile of money he'll likely be exposed for the self-important buffoon that he is. I just pray to god almighty that it's not anywhere near Western New York.

Then let's go steal Mike Tomlin, who is already 10X the coach Cowher ever was. <_<

The same actually goes for Mike Tomlin too....He is riding the co-tail of the best DC in the league right now. His Offense is stinking up the joint and the defense has bailed them out repeatedly.

What he said. Does ANYONE remember how badly Cowher's teams choked in the AFC Championship games, let alone numerous other big games throughout his coaching career? Oh, and then there's the small issue of Cowher's decision to keep Kordell Stewart under center when it was PATENTLY obvious the guy had no skills.

Now Marty Schottenheimer, OTOH, I think would WANT to coach in Buffalo, and could do a good job with this team. But Cowher? No thanks.

I think Wade Phillips is an example of the opposite point. The cowboys cant win a playoff game and they have 52 pro bowlers (estimated number)

Am I missing something?

You complain that Cowher's team choked in the playoffs, and that's a reason you do NOT want him?

But then you would state you would like Marty "Chokenheimer", the HC that built a career of choking out in the playoffs?

Amen, Sir. I am not upset at this team losing. I'm upset at the way they lose. Sure we beat teams with losing records. Now we're even losing to teams with losing records and we don't seem to care - top to bottom. At least it seems like Brandon is upset. Good. Hopefully that translates to a better plan going ahead.

i'd say coach.....even if we had peppers,i doubt this staff would unleash him properly.what really sucks is i heard on sirius this morning that the browns may want cower and schottenheimer.they were saying that coach schottenheimer and cower are very tight.i guess marty would be the gm and cower the coach.that would really suck if cleveland landed both of these guys....................go bills in"09

The reason that everyone is saying that they want Cowher is because he's the opposite of Jauron. He's loud, animated, and is a "take no sh--" kind of guy. He would be an upgrade to what we have now, but I'd rather see Marty in here than Cowher. The price will be lower and he fits our team better.

Top coach. He could help Brandon find the best free agents after he settles in. You are right on about Tony Sporano, I never heard of the guy other then he coached with Parcells in Dallas. But I really like the job he's doing down there.
