RyanC883 Posted September 8 Posted September 8 I was shocked how smooth the whole game-winning FG was. I was worried given how new Pratter was that by rushing onto the field and needing to kick prior to time expiring, the snap would come too early or late for Prater. But everyone did fantastic there. cgang Posted September 8 Posted September 8 I have tons of respect for Prater and how easy he made it seem after joining a new team and new personnel that he never played with before until 3 days ago. 41 years old and a significant history of high performance was/is certainly to our benefit. Quote
BigAl2526 Posted September 8 Posted September 8 "Prater is greater" sounds nice, but if Bass can get healthy, I'm fine with him returning. 1 Quote

I don’t think the same aging applies. An extra few lbs that comes with aging could even help, see Sebastian Janikowski. lmao he really was a tub o' lard at the end there wasnt he Quote

The man is about as veteran as you can get. He’s drilled tons of Game Winners, once held the record for longest Field Goal, has kicked in all kinds of weather. A 30 yarder is a walk in the park for a guy like that. If the Bills do decide to keep him, what’s his distance particularly in bad weather games and can he kick for an entire season before fatigue sets in on his leg 1 Quote

No need to vilify the kicker you do have I’m not saying you need to keep Bass, but making a decision based on one game, is pretty silly 1 1 Quote

I mean, it's the Bills. Hopefully we don't need him to kick too many FGs this year and he only is getting warmed up with EPs. Quote

Bass can stay on it and come back if something happens to Prater knock on wood I thought you either put someone on IR, which meant they were done for the season, or you put someone on IR designated to return, which means they can come back after 4 weeks. You watch other games and other teams kickers are just routinely knocking in clutch kicks. The Bills need a better kicker. I would be fine with Prater the rest of this season but they will need somebody else to kick off. I don't think he got even one touchback. And that's in September. In a couple weeks when the wind picks up 41 year old leg strength ain't gonna cut it. You realize that teams are not kicking into the endzone on purpose, right? 1 1 Quote
The Frankish Reich Posted September 8 Posted September 8 Here's a guy on Reddit who did way more work on rating kickers than anyone really should. Basically an expected points/value added as compared to the completely league-average kicker last year. Note that Prater (small sample!) ranked 17 (basically middle of the pack, about 60th percentile) and Bass ranked 31 (not so good). Bass signed a big contract and there's a big dead cap hit, so if healthy, he'll be back. This is just to say that that big contract was a bad idea because very similar kickers (Prater) obviously can be signed off the street. And that's particularly true with the newest kickoff rules that really don't reward long kickoffs. I'm thinking Beane kind of panic signed him. If Prater continues to be money, I'd expect Bass's injury to linger just a little bit longer than strictly necessary ... Quote

So is he a bad kicker or a good kicker who's injured? Kickers, like hockey goalies, are mostly voodoo anyway. You ride the hot hand. Nothing is forcing the Bills to activate Bass in 4 weeks. ("Man, that groin is taking a long time to get better. Tsk, tsk.") The one thing with Prater is the experience. How valuable is that in clutch situations? I was watching Prater during warmups yesterday and everything was right down the middle, but he didn't try anything longer than 52 yards and that only cleared the bar by a few feet. So you give up on some leg strength but get a savvy kicker with ice in his veins. Quote

We don't need someone who can make 60+ yarders, even though he's done that in the past. Just want someone who won't miss the gimmes. Prater is better than Bass until he misses 1 Quote
nuklz2594 Posted September 8 Posted September 8 Prater...where else would you rather be? Than right here ? Right now? Clutch kick Quote

Warriorspikes51 Posted September 8 Posted September 8 Prater should start regardless of Bass health the rest of the season Would we tie up 2 roster spots with them? Not sure what the solution is but you simply cannot release Prater now. Quote

If hes claimed - the new team would take his contract? There were was a flurry of roster moves in the 2 weeks before week 1 - not sure if this is feasible? Quote
