I don’t understand the overreaction to this. It’s a Practice Squad signing, under the new rules, you’re going to have a mix of young players developing and some JIC veterans.

Opting for familiarity on the practice squad isn’t some sort of organizational failure.

Some of these comments for a PS signing are wild.

You can’t have high end talent, potential and/or depth at every position.

For us.. that position is Safety.

Corner is an issue due to injury, but once Hairston comes back, you can’t ask for much more than a top tier slot corner, top tier CB1 and RD1 pick with decent vet depth.

The Safety positions succcess is reliant on Cole Bishop becoming a dude.  Always has, always will this season.

Poyer on the PS and in the room with Bishop helps that.   If he has to play, so be it. Generally teams arent excited if they have to play PS guys for an extended period of time.. vet or young guy.

I think people were initially upset that Poyer would be on the active roster. I don’t think it was clarified until later on that it was a PS signing.

Just wondering if you can name a former All-Pro veteran who signed a contract at the end of his career with the intention to be on the practice squad all season.

No—— I don’t talk to any nfl vets.  The ps rules only changed 5 years ago to include vets.

Micah Hyde did it last year- but your loophole is “all season”.

we’ll just have to wait and see.  Either way.  Carry on.  I’ll be here to watch you meltdown over PS signings

You’ve been here long enough.  You should 💯 expect this to happen.  Enjoy it bro

If your issues with Hamlin boil down to his athleticism and tackling - those are the same issues an older Poyer has.  You'll get him some practice and install time with babich as i'm sure things are different.  In case of an injury you have an option that you probably feel more comfortable with than hamlin starting again.

This is a level of pathetic you rarely see on a SB favorite😵

Disagree. This is very much like the classic "Patriot Way" of the 00s.

Once your high-priced vet ages out, let him walk. And if he wants to come back a couple years later on the cheap as a role player, welcome him back.

It used to be that guys were just waiting for their contract to expire so they could flee Buffalo and never look back. Now, we are the ones looking to move on, while the players beg to come back.

I dont want Poyer actually playing a single down, but this signing is a + for the organization, not a negative.

Yikes.

I can justify and even appreciate bringing Phillips back. But Poyer is cooked.

Maybe they're hoping he can be the experienced vet in the room as more a player/coach.

If he sees the field, we're screwed. I'll put this in writing: we wont win a single game Poyer starts. Hopefully he'll never have to, but if we get there it wont be pretty.

I think Forrest was supposed to have been that in the off-season. I think we all hopped that blindly..

You have no idea how much Micah helped last year.

we need talent…..and you expect us to have 16 talented players on the PS that can contribute and play?

We’re a perennial Super Bowl contender with very few roster spots up for grabs each year.  All 16 spots on the practice squad aren’t strictly to be used for players that may contribute.  Some are there possibly play.  Some are there to develop with no chance of playing this season.  And some are clearly there to mentor.  Whether or not some fans think that these mentors help is irrelevant to McD and Beane.  Thank god for that.

it’s cool man.  I’ll sit back and enjoy the show you guys put on

I have no idea how much Micah Hyde helped? I mean, I watched the games and saw no uptick in safety play. That’s what we do as fans. Watch the games and form an opinion. If not, none of our opinions matter about anything.

The rest? I really don’t care as you seem to not handle things well when someone has a different opinion than you do.

Cheers.

And there is enough evidence that Poyer was toast within this scheme two seasons ago.

Just a dumb, dumb signing. He offers nothing. Give that practice squad spot to someone that may develop into something, if indeed this is the PS.

This signing may more likely be about him helping with the development of the two young safeties.  Sixteen PS positions create more than enough opportunities to develop young players and provide injury replacements.  This may turn out to be a smart move, even if there is never any intention of having Poyer see game action.

First day on the internet? (not an insult...more a commentary on the current state of online interactions)

This is like having  a "Davis Webb" type of player in the Safety room. That might be the best thing for Bishop.

Hamlin, Cam Lewis, and even Taylor Rapp aren't nearly as gifted physically as Bishop is.  Poyer used to be. That kind of perspective might be really helpful to a player who needs to learn when he can use his athleticism to make a play instead of being rigid with the system.  Who better to help guide him there than a former all pro and team captain?

If he has to play though... yuck.

Poyer is more washed than the 1991 Super Bowl t-shirt at the bottom of my drawer. The management here is really letting me down in that they cannot draft young difference makers back there and develop them.

Poyer came to the Bills in his 5th NFL season, after being cut by the team that drafted him, and then not being able to crack the starting lineup of the 0-32 Browns. And then became All Pro around year 6-7.

Some things take time.

Definitely. Even though they are just bringing him in for the practice squad why did they wait to make this move until after training camp/preseason is over?  I really think they are more behind at the safety position than they were anticipating this year.  Hoping for the best but makes me nervous this season we see more of the same issues as last year

I dont disagree... and honestly I dont disagree with their triage here... I think they hoped for the best, Bishop improves, Forrest steps in as a solid back up and we have a functional Secondary... right now it looks like a complete fire drill back there...  and while I like Rapp he is more of a heat seeking missile than a true cover saftey in my estimation... one also must account for the fact that his play is devastating to all whom he hits... including his own team mates... so there will be people to go down...  I don't mind the insurance on the PS if he is called upon... and I will bet he will be called upon if they keep him there for the season.

Seems similar to the Micah Hyde situation last season. Maybe in certain situations you can play Poyer. Obviously he knows the system and all that.

Fret not, Bills fans...for I have found my helmet and uniform (made by Franklin, we all had one) and I am ready to get out there and embarrass myself so youse guys don't have to.

"And that's your journeyman's favorite journeyman, blacklabel coming in at safety. And now the snap, Lamar Jackson pitches to Derrick Henry and....wow, Henry was nowhere near the secondary and blacklabel has engaged in a full on sprint for the locker room! Our own Sal C reports hearing 'I want my mama!' as he ran by. And that'll be a career for ol' blacklabel."

Sorry guys. I tried.
