ddaryl Posted August 13 Posted August 13 Who is getting a re-worked deal, released, or traded to be able to afford this ???? We are at -$600k without the cook deal so some changes need to happen, now the question is who is the odd duck out? Quote

He is firmly below the elite RB contracts in CMC and Barkley and more in line with the "very good" RB's comparable to guys like Josh Jacobs. AAV is how the agents keep score. For the players, it’s about the guaranteed money. Cook did well in that regard. Quote

I’m shocked this team hasn’t gotten past KC.. shocked.  I might be lukewarm on extending a RB, so I’m hoping he’s more Kamara and less pure RB, but at least Cook stepped up when it mattered.  More than I can say for any supposed talent we’ve given Allen so far.  I couldn’t even tell you the best offensive skill player the chiefs had when they beat Philly outside of Kelce.   Roster talent on offense isn’t why the chiefs have kept two absolutely more talented franchises from getting to the SB in Buffalo and Baltimore.  Its having an elite defense, getting just enough more out of the Reid/Mahomes combo and pure ***** luck Quote

I know Josh is worth every penny, but he makes more in a single season than Cook's entire contract is worth and counts for 20% of the total cap. Between that, his nut farm, and the millions upon millions in endorsement money (not to mention the millions and millions his wife already has), it would be nice if he would pull a Tom Brady and think about taking a little less in order to keep his OL together.  Just sayin.  If you're worried about the cap, there are lots of other places to look than this new contract.  Additionally, Beane shouldve thought about this when he handed Hoecht $7M/yr to sit out with a known PED suspension.   Edited August 13 by DrDawkinstein 1 Quote

Logic Posted August 13 Posted August 13 1) James Cook is a good football player, adds an explosive element to the Bills offense, and makes life easier for Josh Allen.  2) As a matter of team building philosophy, I don't love giving second contracts to running backs that have not consistently displayed bellcow ability and pass catching chops. 3) Giving Cook the most guaranteed money that a running back has gotten in five years is...significant. 4) I believe what likely happened is that the Bills said "look, we can't reach the $15million number you're asking for. But we can up the guarantees". It was a way to meet the agent in the middle, make the player happy, and end the drama. 5) Brandon Beane likely did not want to go into such a critical season -- with the Bills once again on the doorstep of reaching a Super Bowl -- with a disgruntled player on offense and any kind of funkiness in the locker room. His desire for stability and harmony likely contributed to his doing what, for him, is an atypical thing at the running back position. All in all, while the guarantees are high and the move itself goes against my preferred roster building strategy, I'm happy the drama is over, happy for James Cook (players should always get the bag when they can!), and happy that the offensive core is essentially locked in for the next three seasons. Super Bowl contention should continue annually (health permitting), and that's a win for Beane and the Bills.  5 2 Quote

So they are gonna need some cheap talent on defense to come in over the next 3-4 seasons. I think McGovern should be extended as should Torrence (although that won't kick in until 2027) and the Bills will need to likely let Edwards walk but should be able to plug in Anderson or SVPG into that interior offensive line slot.  They have a lot of vets on defense who are gonna fall off AJE, D.Jones, Larry O, Bosa, Milano, Tre White, and Hamlin are all gonna be free agents on the defensive side of the ball after this season. While they could bring back a few of those guys I don't think they are gonna be able to restock on defense via free agency. So getting 6 picks on the defensive side maturing and developing a year ahead of time before a possible vet exodus is just good business. 2 3 Quote

For me, he needs to be utilized more as a pass catcher.  That’s not on him though.. I have no idea why he hasn’t been.  Getting him against a linebacker in coverage is a cheat code every time. 4 5 Quote
