Ray Ray Davis pick receiving praise

Funny thing is Davis may be a better receiver than Cook the TD dropper

He may be better than Cook at everything other than a 40 yard dash.  Cook is a fast guy who ran through open holes, look at the end of the year when teams tried to stop the run, he was mediocre at best.

Always thought Fowler provided good if not great coverage and insight on a variety of nfl subjects,  so I was happy to see this write up on our 4th round RB.

Also had no clue he was only the 3rd 4th round pick Beane has made here, with the 2 others being Taron and Gabe, some great value for the 4th round. Will Ray Ray continue the trend?

So your saying that 66.6 percent of the time Beane picks a Davis in the 4th rd? That's good to know for the future.

I think so. I loved his highlight reel, he fills a huge need, I just loved the way he runs. He is a natural running and catching as well. I predict he plays a very important role for us this season and possibly early on as well….

A great pick at a need position. If he was younger or didn’t have all those miles, he would have been picked earlier…

I also think he picks up pass blocking fairly well. He is clearly tough…. What a nice combo of muscle, balance, athleticism, moves and speed (although he is no burner, he is fast enough to break longer runs.)

I like how he would hit the hole, and go right passed the LB waiting for him with a move that didn’t appear to slow him down. A little juke and gone, easy-peasy. I think I like him more than Singletary and I liked him more than most fans. Davis has more straight line speed, more of a north-south runner…..more of a receiver too…

Man his highlight reel is awesome.  I keep trying to put a comparison for him and I just can't,  on the high end, maybe some Derick Henry,  mixed with some Kamara?

Not sure but he should be an instant difference maker and has big time potential,  this is definitely the best RB duo under the McBeane era and Ty Johnson isn't no bum either.

I think they like Johnson in his current role.  If Cook got hurt I dont see him carry the load.

Cook petered out late in the season.  He averaged a pathetic 3.6 yards-per-carry in his last five games.  Not sure whether that was how he was used or simply being unused to that many touches.

How this season plays out will be incredibly interesting.  We had an even higher rated RB in Moss, very similar in style to Davis, and far more accomplished in college, and we didn't seem to know how to use him and didn't do much with him.

There certainly isn't any clear plan in view.

Yeah I don't mind having a guy like Johnson in the rotation because RB's are still an inflation-adjusted dime-a-dozen but Davis is likely to move into the RB2 role pretty quickly.   Johnson had very little use last year and still ended up injured.   Hasn't proven he can give you much work over the years.   It's not out of the question that Gore or someone else makes the roster ahead of Johnson, even.

He was used when Brady took over. I thought he added a nice dimension. I suspect he will have some specific plays in a game plan this year. I fully expect he is active with as stated Davis the short yardage guy. Good problem to have. I see Gore competing with Davis and likely on PS.

Johnson already provides a nice complement to Cook, and this pick just bolsters our depth. I hope it works out!

Johnson is more a scat back. Davis is more a power runner. Different types......

presuming cook has improved his pass blocking at least a little bit, james or ray ray both give us the same utility.  our O will be able to run the same plays (once they are all up to speed and such) with either of them on the pitch.

more explosiveness and fluidity from cook, more power and smash from ray ray.  if we can run the same plays w both guys on the field, we can trick the d and run the big rhino into the smaller fronts and the faster guy away from them.

part of what has hurt us since dabo was our OC was we were a bit predictable based on who we lined up.  even last season w brady we could only run certain plays depending on who the rb was (especially as murray broke down).

The Davis pick is outstanding.  The kid has a legit ability to start for someone this year.  It will be nice of we got over 2000 yards rushing between him and Cook,NOT counting Josh's yards.

We used to do that between Thomas and Davis during the superbowl years.

You do realize Ty Johnson only rushed a total of 30 times for 130 yards on the season?   Total.   It's not like he's some young diamond in the rough,  it was the least productive season of his 5 year career and he was released by the Jets last summer.    He's JAG.   That's fine for a lightly used rotational RB but they didn't draft Ray Davis in the 4th round to be 3rd in the rotation to a street free agent type like Ty.

They over-used the light-duty James Cook last year and he slowed noticeably down the stretch........so I suspect they are hoping to get 100+ carries from a workhorse back like Davis this year.   *Maybe* Ty Johnson can do that but his career high is 63 carries back in 2019.    Johnson is a journeyman 3rd RB and special teamer but as a veteran he is entitled to a higher base pay than a rookie like Gore so it's quite conceivable that they could cut Johnson.   The possibility also includes cutting him before camp breaks and bringing him back after week 1 when his salary is no longer guaranteed and he can be paid week to week.......which would be much more palatable for a 3rd RB.

I think the idea is Davis and Johnson take some of the carries off Cook.  I expect similar amount of touches but more in space and out of the backfield.  Cook should be a primary player for the offense and used in a manner similar to Kamara.

Ya when Davis was the only WR 9/10 it was a run. Can't be so predictable. With Kincaid/Knox they could've mixed in more PA and just passed more in general

where is the ray ray coming from?

Is it just Ray? For some reason I was convinced it was ray ray

That's not good but I think we used him under 5 min w the lead a ton and were content getting 5-7 yards combined on 1st and 2nd down when the D knew we were running, in order to burn clock  and skewed his average.

Idk, overall Cook is a really good back imo and feel with Brady having a full off season , Cook will put up much better #s

Which is why I said Johnson is a complement back and provides the lateral quickness and vision that a power back lacks and Cook sometimes doesn't seem to have
