Will DeAndre Hopkins be available this offseason?

I'm not so sure of this. The cap is going to start going up dramatically in '24/'25. That's when the league will have recouped their 2021 losses and the new TV deals and gambling money will be kicking in. I think we could easily pay 2 of Edmunds, Poyer, and Oliver, and still overpay for Hopkins without sacrificing much if any of our future. Allen and others can be restructured. I don't want us to become the Rams but we could afford to make one big overpriced move IMO. When you have a QB with the biggest arm in the league you can easily rationalize overpaying for a WR with Hopkins' skill set.

But you’re sure about the rest of the post.  So that works

We took our big swing with Von this year. Unfortunately, our shiny new toy got broken. I hope he’s completely ready for the playoffs next year.  He’s a closer!

You don’t get to take big swings every year. That would cripple your roster. You don’t want to only be able to shop in the bargain bin in Free Agency. As Beane has said, they want to build for sustainable success.

For sure.  I agree 💯-  especially if we win the SB this year.  If we don’t, I wouldn’t be shocked to see them shake things up a little

The Score's Jordan Schultz reports that the Cardinals plan to trade DeAndre Hopkins this offseason.

i’ve been telling my buddies for the last month that if we could just get DeAndre Hopkins to be our 1b to Stefon Diggs 1a we would be set at receiver next year. Gabe Davis can then flourish as the third guy like he used to. And we know DeAndre Hopkins has some of the best hands this league has ever seen.

Then the draft would be Offensive line galore with a sprinkle of secondary help

______
It really would depend on his price because we need OL help now and OL often need time to be quality starters. I do want this draft to net us some serious OL talent, but I will be mildly surprised if we don't sign at least 1 very solid veteran blocker. That's what Saffold was supposed to be, but it looks like injuries have taken their toll on him. Maybe not though. An accident free offseason might allow him to rebound a bit. That rib injury certainly didn't help him any. I guess it just comes down to who's available at what price in FA. I can't predict. I also don't see us trading away any day 1 or day 2 picks.

No money. Gotta replace or pay Edmunds, Poyer, and Saffold. Gotta think about Oliver’s extension. Maybe pay Motor (but probably not)? Morse was out a lot this year too, have to think about his replacement. Any FAs this year will be replacements or affordable depth pieces.

Even if they don't, why not make the move anyways? True difference makers are hard to come by. Beane has been incredibly patient about using his draft picks and cap space. What's the point of all that patience if you don't cash in every once in a while?

Von Miller. We do cash in once in a while.

Just not lots and lots of times in a while.

People keep saying this, that we can afford it. That's correct, but beside the point.

I can afford a Lamborghini. As long as I don't mind jam-packing my credit cards and living under a bridge the next few years.

The question is whether it would be good judgment to bring the guy in. It wouldn't.

Yeah, if you re-structure a lot of guys you could keep rolling forward as long as you weaken yourself at other positions, same as I can pack the credit cards on the Lambo.

Same thing with things you can rationalize. Sure you can. Same as I can rationalize that Lambo. Doesn't mean either one would be using good judgment.

It's not just that we're $6M under the cap for next year. It's that we're only $19M over the cap (27th) for 2024 even with only 30 guys under contract yet for that year. Throw in Hopkins on top of it, especially if we were to re-sign him and we'd be under serious pressure and would have to start creating holes at other positions.

We have a hole at #2 WR right now. That needs to be fixed. If it's a matter of paying Hopkins or paying Ed Oliver that's an easy choice in my mind. We have a QB that loves throwing the ball downfield and we don't have any WRs with a skill set to match that. Davis almost has that skill set but it's not anywhere close to what Hopkins could give us on those passes.

I heard Peter King on Pro Football Talk last week, he said that the word around the league is the cap will start going up "appreciably" in 2024 and even moreso in 2025 and 2026. I think we could easily structure contracts in a way where the big cap hits don't come until the salary cap explodes. I'm not a believer in being overly aggressive like the Rams have been but I think we could make this one work. If that means Oliver and Poyer walk, so be it. We'll get comp picks back.

Seeing Hopkins for a 2nd round pick and conditional draft pick...unsure the cap hit but this would be a fantastic addition.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. I don't think you will find a big receiver upgrade in free agency or where we are drafting.

So what is the argument against trading for him? Diggs can't do it all by himself and inconsistent Gabe Davis is not the answer. Backload his contract using the money we would have used to pay Oliver.

Hopkins will be 31 when next season starts and has lost much of the last two years with injuries.  He carries a cap hit over $30 mil next year and $26 m the following year.  He is a very poor candidate for further big money extension.  This is no doubt why AZ is trying to dump him. Buyer beware here.  It would be a terrible move for the Bills and has zero chance of happening in my opinion.

id be worried that he's shot physically and just gets hurt.

if we had all this cap tied up in him and von and they both got hurt next year (after being hurt the past year) it would suck SO BAD.

Yikes, idk where you can find that.

Arizona is one of the few trade partners that could work for Buffalo. They have a little cap not much, and they are the ones who want to move Hopkins. If you include Oliver in a deal and possibly Epenesa or Basham it can help with some of the salary for this year. Even if Hopkins goes elsewhere Arizona is one of the few teams who might be willing to take Oliver’s salary for this year.

Something about him annoys me. He gives off douche vibes and is in serious decline. I mean I won’t complain if he ended up on our team because he was a beast. But you always need to be careful with aging, former stars. See Green, AJ.
