gobills404
Just like everybody’s been sleeping fine since Paul Whelan got sentenced to 16 years in Russian prison. Too bad he’s not gay or a minority otherwise people like @Gene Frenkle would pretend to give a crap in order to stroke their woke ego. Irv
So 9.5 year sentence. Sounds about right. Almost 41 when the sentence is complete. After hard labor for 9.5 years, the body will be shot and it's career will be over. It's a shame it didn't think through the consequences when it smuggled dope into Russia, especially with such a feeble President at the helm. Frankly, I'd rather see the USA utilize prisoner swaps for heroes, not dummy drug smugglers who can bounce a ball. If they swap for the "Merchant of Death", innocent people worldwide WILL die due to Griner's stupidity and selfishness. What a mess! TheBrownBear
It's sad that people delight in the misfortune of others. The identity politics wars have turned so many Americans, on both sides of the political aisle, into really despicable humans. Having said that, Griner did make an incredibly stupid decision and she will now pay the price for it, same as that Marc Fogel dude who is being gulag'd for 16 years. You don't have to like or agree with all of the laws of another country, but you damn well best abide by them as a visitor.

I haven't followed too closely, but I just have to wonder what the hell she was doing in Russia in the first place. Seems like the last place on Earth an American should want to be these days. She should probably know better than to fly with weed in any form. It's illegal to do so in the USA as well, so perhaps go without pot for a while. This is obviously a power play by Russia as they could more easily just deport her, but they want to do prisoner swap, or if they don't get it, they will punish her far more severely than she deserves. Truly sad.

It doesn't matter because a) she admitted it, b) her lawyers admitted it and c) she has a prescription from a US doctor to use it. IOW...she brought it to Russia. If she had been targeted, it was most likely because she was a (fairly) high-profile American. They would have done the same to a straight white person also. A lot of them do it cuz they make a lot more money playing there than here. Quote SB Nation reports in the 2019 season, the WNBA’s maximum salary was $117,500, lower than the veteran’s minimum in the big four pro sports leagues in the U.S. But women’s basketball leagues overseas pay as much as 10 times that amount. This lures WNBA players there during the WNBA’s offseason. Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi both spent several seasons early in their careers playing basketball in Moscow, thanks to the support of Shabtai Kalmanovich. The former KGB spy entered the business world and became a billionaire. Using his wealth, Kalmanovich sponsored basketball teams and convinced the UConn alumni to play for his squads. He treated the ladies “like royalty” and spoiled them, paying them multiple times their U.S. salaries. Taurasi admits that money “is the only reason you go” to Russia, or any other country, to play basketball. https://www.sportscasting.com/sue-bird-diana-taurasi-billionaire-boss-murdered-hitman-russia/

She got 6 months fewer than the prosecutor wanted and 1 year less than the maximum. Because, again, she broke their laws. Try as you might, you can't get around that fact. What did you think was appropriate? Just time served? Because she's black and/or gay. Other countries don't give a *****, much less ones like Russia. Hopefully she gets out soon, but not for that arms dealer. And hopefully she realizes how lucky she was to be/live in America. As for Trump being indicted, wake me when it happens. But no way is this a legal issue, this is a kidnapping, that's why Russia is negotiating a swap. If this was about her breaking laws, then there would be no high level talks of a swap. The law would be only thing that matters, but Russia is using her to try and get something
