Who is Buffalo's emergency kicker?

He does. It is Hyde

Yes - the Bills did some “fun” games where they have guys do them for fun.  We saw them before practice in the past do this.

He had 2 or 3 guys that he knew could kick just practice a bit for emergencies.  Guys he knew would be active.

Just like he has Hyde ready for return duty if needed and McKenzie ready for CB duty if needed.

This would not have happened the same way here - that is for sure.  He would have a back-up holder ready and the punter to kick and a backup ready in case.

If I were a kicker struggling to make a team  i'de practice long snapping. A long snapper that can kick would always have a roster spot.

How is having a kicker be a crappy long snapper on the off chance you have a kicker injury any better than just going for it on 4th down and going for 2?  I'd much rather have no kicker for (part of) 1 game than a subpar LS every game.  While that struggling kicker-turned-LS is practicing snaps, he's not practicing kicks, and will be an even worse backup kicker for it.

In your proposed scenario, you now have a subpar backup LS snapping to a subpar backup kicker.

Why would he be a crappy long snapper? He'd have to be able to snap the ball well.

Honestly it would work for any position. Learn how to kick. I'm sure if someone spent time learning to kick they'd get good enough to attempt extra points.

Again...it isn't about "can he learn how to kick".  In a live setting it is 95% about timing that has been practiced over and over and over again.  The difference between a made kick and a blocked kick in a live setting is probably a few tenths of a second. It would be near impossible for a player who hasn't had any practice with timing to do this in a live game randomly.

Kicking with a player who does not practice regularly is more likely to result in blocked kick, blown snap or fumble.

I do like Hyde as emergency kicker though who has good hands and would attempt to make first down in fake.

Long snappers, 3rd QB, players... what about the PUNTER practicing field goals? Don't tell me that these guys, with obviously very strong legs, don't have 2-3 sessions of 20 minutes a week to also practice field goals (and field goal pickers practicing punts). No they wouldn't turn into great ones, but they could certainly make 33 yards and under ones fairly regularly.

They said the issue with the Carolina punter is he's from Australia and played their style football which doesn't involve place kicking so has never done it.  For most teams the punter could kick FG in emergency.  Admittedly is surprising when they signed the punter they didn't have him practice kicking FG's too.  Wouldn't be surprised if that is what he's doing right now though.

I guess Pj Walker was one in HS but he was bad in emergency try-outs. Their punter was an aussie rules guy so he had no PK experience. Just a bad situation

which were during warmups.

How does any team not have a plan for kicker if theirs suddenly goes out?  I bet for most teams its the punter.  But if it's not---how do you not "try out" alternatives waaaay before warmups in the game in which you K can't answer the bell??

Also, how  is a punter not be able to make a decent attempt at kicking a stationary football?  Why wouldn't he practice that?--he's got nothing else to do all week.

Crazy.

Booth lustig

On Oct. 16, 1966, Bills kicker Booth Lusteg was attacked after missing a field goal that cost the team a victory against the San Diego Chargers.

Almost a dozen men were overheard planning to "punch out" Lusteg when he left War Memorial Stadium, according to an Oct. 19, 1966. article in The Buffalo Evening News.

Such a specialty.. there's no way they could get to NFL level by just picking it up while they're already in the NFL

There are kids at 6A ball in Texas.. and all they do is long snap.. that's their position

They're going to be a D1 Long snapper and then an NFL Long snapper..  it's tough to just transition to that and get the rotations you need and the speed you need on the snap

They should practice kicking also lol. Long snappers actually double the career length of the average Nfl player. I'm going to convince my kid long snapping is cool. Forget QB.
