The ‘Infrastructure’ Bill: The Deeper You Get, The Worse It Gets.

“It has just $110 billion, or less than 10%, for what’s historically been considered infrastructure—roads and bridges.

The other 90% is to fund mass transit waste, green energy nonsense, and more items that the states or the private sector could do.”

What do you like about this Bill that has prompted your victory lap.  Please give details.

I especially like the part that taxes you by the mile to pay for it. Also, your new car will shut off if you’ve been drinking.

That's a shitton of miles.  So if you're drinking in your car it will shut off?

So you got nothin' other than it's got Democrat support?

As a fiscal conservative I’d always rather see a true infrastructure bill over another worthless, unproductive and corruption filled social program. When done correctly an infrastructure program is a jobs bill in which most of the tax moneys should go right back into the US economy through the labor and materials required to build stuff that’ll last for many decades. Now let’s see if this one includes jobs that Americans will actually do!

Yeah, they’ll be taxing you by the mile instead of a gas tax.

Car companies have a few years to create systems in new cars that scan your eyes to see if you’re drunk. I assume that will eventually be used for weed also. Some cars already have a similar system that checks to see if you’re alert. This one will be able to tell if you’ve had a few beers.

So you're saying they will eliminate the gas tax?  Bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!

And I was busting them on you. You said your car would shut off if you were drunk.  I actuality you can't start it at all.  And I really don't have a problem with that.  Drunk driving is a huge issue.

I disagree with the word deadly.  Texting probably causes mostly rear enders where people are still wrapping around trees on booze.

I had no idea “mass transit” was not infrastructure. Some guy decides he’ll redefine infrastructure to include only roads, auto bridges,

and tunnels, and then does a little arithmetic. This is what (for some people) passes as “insightful” in today’s world.

Biden gets it

Politico reports:

In a memo released Friday, [Celinda] Lake’s polling firm found that 87 percent of voters over the age of 65 favored allowing Medicare to negotiate with prescription drug corporations to lower prices. The survey conducted in mid-June among 800 voters over the age of 65, also found that seniors would cross party lines “presenting both an opportunity for Democratic candidates who favor this proposal to win over voters as well as a threat that could erode their base of support if they oppose it,” the memo states.

Democrats' $3.5 trillion spending package in jeopardy, with Pelosi appearing short on votes

by Joseph Weber

Washington Democrats' efforts to pass their signature, $3.5 trillion spending package is in jeopardy of falling apart, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, leader of the Democrat-controlled chamber, does not appear to have the votes this week to advance the measure awaiting in the Senate. The votes are set to be cast Monday and Tuesday, with House members returning for two days during their August recess to try to move forward the pending package. Pelosi can afford to lose only three votes in the narrowly divided chamber.

It's a nice thought to think this thing might die in the House, but these things typically have a way of working themselves out when wheelbarrows of cash are passed under the noses of the holdouts.

I no longer follow the day to day on these large packages. It’s just postering and nonsense.

In reality, these moderates just want some pork to bring home to their districts and they’ll have a deal.

Infrastructure is polling in the 60’s so it obviously will pass in some form at some point.

Florida Democrat Stephanie Murphy, a leader in the Gang of Nine, wrote a separate op-ed in the Orlando Sentinal this week. She described herself as being “bewildered” by her party’s leadership and the “misguided strategy to make passage of the popular, already-written, bipartisan infrastructure bill contingent upon passage of the contentious, yet-to-be-written, partisan reconciliation bill.”

Those don’t sound like the words of someone who is ready to be “muscled” into anything by some vague threats issued by her party’s committee chairs or the Speaker. If she or her eight colleagues have any pet projects that they wanted to see included in the legislation, those items would have already been put on the table. The crazy part about all of this is that none of the nine have gone full-Manchin and said that the reconciliation bill is out of the question. They’re all willing to negotiate and make some of the more disturbing parts more palatable.

They just want to get the infrastructure bill out of the way first.

Why is the House Progressive Caucus so determined to flip an easy chip shot into the loss column?

Democrat Resistance to Nancy Pelosi Infrastructure ‘Hostage’ Strategy Grows

by Sean Moran

Democrat rank-and-file resistance to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) hardline tactics on infrastructure has only grown since the leading House lawmaker has attempted to strong-arm moderate Democrats. Moderate Democrats, led in part by Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), have led the revolt against Pelosi’s strategy to hold the $1.2 trillion so-called bipartisan infrastructure bill “hostage” to secure passage for the $3.5 trillion budget resolution and subsequent reconciliation infrastructure bill. The House planned to vote on a rule Monday

House Democrat ‘Concerned’ About Price Tag of Biden’s $3.5 Trillion Budget Plan.

During a Tuesday virtual town hall, Rep. Kurt Schrader said while it was “really nice to see” bipartisan support for a $550 billion infrastructure plan, he is “concerned about the amount of money involved” in the multitrillion-dollar megabill championed by Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.).

“The speaker also is trying to go along with another package the president is interested in on some of the key social issues out there,” Schrader said. “I am concerned about the amount of money involved with that. So far, they’re talking about whether or not they’re going to pay for that.”

Schrader is not the only congressional Democrat to express wariness about the bill’s price tag, a trend that endangers Biden’s economic ambitions. Sen. Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) told his partymates Wednesday to “hit the pause button” on the legislation, citing “runaway inflation.” One day later, he penned a Wall Street Journal op-ed to detail why he “won’t support spending another $3.5 trillion.”

“Over the past 18 months, we’ve spent more than $5 trillion responding to the coronavirus pandemic,” Manchin wrote. “Now Democratic congressional leaders propose to pass the largest single spending bill in history with no regard to rising inflation, crippling debt, or the inevitability of future crises. Ignoring the fiscal consequences of our policy choices will create a disastrous future for the next generation of Americans.”

Left unsaid: Biden doesn’t have the clout — the combination of love/fear/respect — on Capitol Hill to pass his signature agenda item.

He’s basically a first-term lame duck.

The true cost of Dems’ ‘$3.5 trillion’ plan is actually $5 trillion

New York Post, by Editorial

We’ll probably keep referring to it as a “$3.5 trillion” bill to avoid confusion, but it’s well worth noting that Democrats’ “human infrastructure” plan would actually cost far more — at least $5 trillion. The standard way to “score” costs is to say what they’d be over the first decade. So to reduce sticker shock, the bill pretends that key new entitlements — in particular, a huge expansion of Medicaid — will expire after just three years. In reality, at that point Dems will argue that it would be incredibly cruel to not fund “promised” benefits and suggest some new tax hikes to cover the added costs.

Democrats CANNOT use $3.5trillion spending bill to give millions of immigrants a pathway to citizenship, Senate's parliamentarian rules

Associated Press, by Melissa Koenig & Staff

Democrats cannot use their $3.5 trillion spending bill to give millions of immigrants a pathway to citizenship, the Senate´s parliamentarian ruled late Sunday in a crushing blow to the party's agenda. The decision by Elizabeth MacDonough, the Senate´s nonpartisan interpreter of its rules, is a potentially damaging setback for President Joe Biden, congressional Democrats and their allies in the pro-immigration and progressive communities. It badly damages Democrats´ hopes of unilaterally enacting - over Republican opposition - changes letting several categories of immigrants gain permanent residence and possibly citizenship

We previously reported that Manchin told Joe Biden that he isn’t going to get the $3.5 trillion because it’s too expensive and he wouldn’t go along with that number.

Now comes word that Sinema also has issued her own “ultimatum” during a meeting with Biden last week — that if the House “delays its scheduled Sept. 27 vote on the bipartisan infrastructure plan — or if the vote fails — she won’t be backing a reconciliation bill.”

Sinema’s office said it wouldn’t disclose details of her private conversations, but added: “She does look forward to House leadership making good on their commitment to an up-or-down vote on the historic and bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act next Monday — to create jobs and expand economic opportunities across the country.”

At least 10 moderate House Democrats are reportedly on the same page as Sinema, including Rep. Kurt Schrader.

“If they delay the vote — or it goes down — then I think you can kiss reconciliation goodbye,” the Oregon Democrat told Politico’s Playbook. “Reconciliation would be dead.”

Meanwhile, the leftist wing is arguing the opposite — they wouldn’t vote for the infrastructure bill if it isn’t tied to the reconciliation bill.

Remember that Pelosi is caught in a jam between the progressives in her caucus and the centrists. Progressives don’t want to pass the bipartisan roads-and-bridges infrastructure bill that’s already passed the Senate until the reconciliation social-welfare bill passes the Senate as well. They’re afraid — not unreasonably — that if they pass the bipartisan bill first, Manchin and Sinema will declare “mission accomplished” and walk away from the reconciliation mega-spending that lefties want. So House progs are holding the bipartisan bill hostage, insisting they won’t vote for it until the reconciliation bill makes it to the House. Dem centrists are nervous about the spending in the reconciliation bill, however, and want to make sure they at least get a legislative win by passing the bipartisan bill. So they made a counter-threat that they won’t vote for the reconciliation bill unless Pelosi holds a standalone vote on the bipartisan bill first. Catch-22.

Caught in the middle, Pelosi mollified the centrists by promising several weeks ago that they’d vote on the bipartisan bill next Monday, September 27. She hoped at the time that the reconciliation bill would be ready by then. But Manchin and Sinema have wrecked that wish, with Manchin first calling for a “pause” on reconciliation due to the bill’s mind-boggling price tag and Sinema more recently telling Biden she’s uncomfortable with the party’s proposals on prescription drug pricing. The Senate will never iron all of that out and get a bill passed in a week.

So now Pelosi’s stuck. If she holds a vote on the bipartisan bill next week as scheduled, it’s possible — even likely — that it’ll fail because progressives won’t vote for it without the reconciliation bill. But if she doesn’t hold a vote and pass the bill, Sinema has allegedly told Biden that reconciliation is dead.

The entire Democratic infrastructure program now hangs by a thread.

Let's not forget the Federal debt limit vote where the majority in the Senate is looking for 10 Republican votes to reach a 60 vote minimum to pass.  Otherwise they can go the reconciliation route which is expected to produce a 50-50 split with the VP casting the tie breakers but that vote along party lines would lay all the debt on the Dems.  So lots of intrigue to go along with all the wasteful spending with borrowed money never to be paid back that will be monetized by the Fed while they also claim to be pursuing a policy of "tapering" debt purchases which by itself is another joke.  Quite the tragic comedy we have going here.
