Canadian Bills Fan
I have debated posting this but I am very curious to hear everyone's thoughts on this. This is not about the virus but how our countries have handled the vaccine rollout. I want to applaud the USA and how your government has handled the rollout. I know the running joke is that some Americans are envious of the Canadian healthcare but today I say the opposite. I am envious of how Biden has taken hold of the vaccine issue and has made so much available so soon. Currently in Canada, we are still only vaccinating those 60+ as opposed to the USA where I believe I saw that anyone 18+ who wants the vaccine can get it starting April 19th? That's mind boggling to me. I live in Ontario and we just announced today our 3rd state of emergency and our 3rd stay at home order. This time for a minimum of 4 weeks. Canada has roughly a population of 40 Million where I believe the USA has 10x that amount. It's amazing how far ahead you guys are and I am not ashamed to say I am jealous. D. L. Hot-Flamethrower
You guys need a new government, starting with the PM. Trudeau is a clown, he and his cronies have attempted to set the country on a zero infection rate path. The economy and the pandemic were always intertwined. Good luck trying to recover from the situation he has created, I truly feel bad for many Canadians. Edited April 9, 2021 by D. L. reddogblitz
My theory is its less a roll out problem and more of a supply problem. Last year the US ordered and bought 800 million doses. How many did Canada pre order and purchase? I suspect that's why we're getting it faster. Money talks.

Giuseppe Tognarelli
I have literally zero sympathy for anyone who hasn't gotten the vaccine within the next month or two. We should be able to go back to completely normal, not forced to limit activities and wear masks to protect those who don't want to protect themselves by getting a vaccine. It makes no sense. 1 2

Fun fact: your life can go back to normal without a vaccine. And the fact is that we were forced to limit activities and wear masks by the elderly to protect the elderly. I'm sure most folks who don't get the vaccine couldn't give two ***** whether or not they're "protected" from COVID.

The age groups being vaccinated vary state by state, but Biden is pushing to move things along quickly. The vaccine rollout you describe puzzles me because when they were developed, there was talk that Canada had ordered enough vaccine to vaccinate everyone 3 or 4x over.....did Canada just get stiffed on deliveries, or did it choose vaccine candidates that washed out/not wish to approve one that's available? So is Canada being stiffed on deliveries, or what's up with that? Canada has little in the way of domestic vaccine production. Trump made threats and promises to domestic producers in the US to keep vaccines here. Huge subsidies followed by threats to yank them back if they didn’t come through domestically. A long history but the short firm us this. 1. Many years ago Canada forced a reduction of patents on new drugs produced in Canada and tougher higher tax laws 2. The results ....drug companies left for more favourable countries....Canada developed a huge industry of generic drug manufacturers, Canada drug costs dropped significantly as a result ( even trump told Americans to go to a Canada to buy drugs). Often bus loads of US vutuzens came to Canada to purchase prescriptions. 3.Pfizer has openly told Trudeau to fix the tax structure. He did not. Whether that is good or bad, who knows. 4. One thing you never see advertised in Canada is drug companies reducing costs to those people who may not be able to afford the drug. Why? US drug companies make so much money they act generous, take the bows, yet the accepted millions of government dollars to help with this vaccine. 5. So Canada gets cheaper drugs but limited access to these emergency drugs (and others from time to time) 6. Trudeau is still a nut! Wacka
Reason drugs cost so much more in the US is because the re5t of the world has a cap on prices. It takes many years and lots of $ to do the research and the testing. In other countries they can't recoup those costs, so they rely on the US to do it. The last big medicine that was developed in Canada was probably insulin by Banting and Best in the 20s. The generics are drugs where the patents have run out. The research for those were done years ago.

When you factor in the Canadian business model with respect to health care, as you pointed out, it’s hard not to come to the conclusion we’re being taken advantage of. The Canadian govt has convinced everyone that their process works really, really well until, voila, suddenly it doesn’t when people get sick— which is part of the reason drugs and health care are important. Personally, I’m happy to see neighbors helping neighbors, but it is kind of ironic. It strikes me an awful lot like the smarty pants who saved all sorts of money on health insurance but was amazed that when he developed cancer companies were unwilling to take on the risk. We are behind in vaccines not because of a Healthcare system, but tax system and patent laws. Ying and yang. It is always a trade off. You financed Astra to take over a producer in Baltimore that destroyed 15,000,000 doses because of bad management. So all Healthcare systems have their issues. That discussion is way to long. Most of the civilized world has a similar system as we do. It begins with a believe that all citizens are entitled to Healthcare regardless of $$$$$. The pros and cons for either is irrelevant. But so be it...let it rain purple.

Niagara, the US system doesn’t leave anyone without healthcare it simply puts the first line of access with and through your employer. It’s a way to incentivize work and way to have employers compete for good employees. It’s also a way to entice others to work in the public sector where benefits are more plentiful. Our system works very well and the vast majority of our citizens are very happy with it.
