Jordan Phillips has been missed

Recommended Posts

I said this last night.

If we still had Shaq and Jordan, our D would not have played like that. It is personal with them vs Tenn from last year. They would have been hyped, and at least one of them wouldve made a big play when we needed it (last year Jordan made THREE in that game).

Was not impressed with Addison/Butler/Jefferson's flat performance.

A lot of factors went into the loss last night. It was definitely a perfect storm of Bills BS. But his could have helped. Oh well.

Jordan Phillips gave the Bills a huge push up the middle and were not getting that this season,  now we have our ends just racing up field .  QB'S are just stepping up and making throws,  huge error not resigning him.  This defence is bad because we cannot get pressure and our DB'S cannot stick we receivers for extended time,  our pass rush is trash

Keep in mind that Star had not opted out when this decision was made.  I am sure Beane would have reprioritized Phillips, had he known.

How exactly is his value showing? He was basically useless rushing the passer we're allowing the same yards per carry we did last year despite milano missing over half the snaps so far and edmunds playing like crap. We also held Henry to his lowest ypc since week 6 of last season and Jacobs to the lowest ypc of his career.

I'm not missing Star but I am missing Jordan Phillips and Shaq

More likely we're missing a LOT of continuity from last year. Hard to say each one we lost is the main reason the D looks like this. But again I suspect it's more Shaq, followed by J Phillips

I miss Shaq Lawson more than I miss the liability against the run in the Middle.  Also if he is such a dominate interior passrusher what are his sack numbers this year?

Reason Bills and OTHER teams cannot get to the QB is holding calls are NON EXISTANT anymore So it is what it is at this point.  I counted 9 plays Titans would have been called for a hold and another 7 where the Bills would have as well in years passed

I don't really agree about Phillips because he was always a liability on run downs and he was never diligent with his gaps, but I can agree with Lawson. I was all for moving on from him, but he was good at setting the edge and not letting things get by him. The defensive line really misses that this year.

Better to at least have someone set the edge if they can't get to the QB and pressure him. Right now we're getting neither.

The main issue in terms of pass rush is that teams are throwing the ball very quickly against us. The average pass against Buffalo is being thrown in 2.59 seconds. If you compare that to the 34 QBs that have thrown a significant number of passes this year, that's the 7th quickest in the league. The Bills also rank 3rd in the league in terms of pass rush win rate, which is the percentage of plays you have a guy beat their block in under 2.5 seconds.

There's obviously a lot more context to it than that, but there isn't much the DLine can do if the pass is being thrown before they really have a chance to get pressure. It's pretty much been a failure at all 3 levels of the defense.

I'm not so much talking about their overall play, but more focused on how they play the Titans, and both of their roles last year in talking a TREMENDOUS amount of smack that got into the OLs head. With all that smack talking on the line, I doubt they let the rest of the Defense go into the game so flat. And Phillips had probably his best game last year in Nashville. Broken Table Cleats and all.

I agree with your general assessment tho. Definitely missing Shaq to set that edge, which was pathetically non-existent last night. Almost as if our actual gameplan was to have the DEs crash inside. But that couldnt be right.

6'6 340 pounds (being conservative) AND gets a pass rush up the middle...

Can't coach raw size and strength.... Star at 315 pounds was the small DT (although he's 6' 2'' so similar proportions)

6'6 340 pounds (being conservative) AND cannot hold up against the run like a 6'2 287 DT is.

Honestly really wanted Shaq Lawson over Phillips.

Coulda had both. Coulda kept the whole band together. Both Shaq and Jordan in their prime and being "their best selves".

Instead we got 2 old men and a bust reclamation project.

You can't fix the trenches in season.

The defense is going to be bad this year.

Going to need to out score everyone, play with leads, and no turnovers.  Josh has to be perfect against teams with excellent offenses.

That's:

Chiefs

Seattle

Pittsburgh

49ers (if fully healthy)

Cardinals

Like I said yesterday.  We can get away with a bad defense so long as we stay healthy on offense.

We SHOULD beat and wont need 30 points to beat

Patriots at least once

Dolphins

Jets

Denver

Chargers

One objection: Cardinals are NOT an excellent offense.

Agree, I wish we kept our UFAs from last year.  Pretty much all but one of our FA additions have sucked hardcore.

He hasn't been screaming off the edge for the last couple of years. He looks so slow and is pulling some Murphy type moves to end up out of position. There were a few times today where he 3ys ago he makes a tackle in the backfield, and now he barely sees the guy. Losing Shaq for Murphy type money was the worst decision they've made so far.

They ran on us last year too. Star did nothing to stop the run, but we were much better on the edge and against the pass. If you go back and watch you will see teams running up the middle with ease in multiple games.

Sorry, was not clear enough. I posted elsewhere that Hughes may have lost a step, not crazy just not quite the same. Hughes is still a productive DE. But when I say he lost a step, I mean he can't be "the guy" anymore, not without some help in the interior, which he does not have. He isn't at a place where he is a situational guy like Lorax last year either. Hughes can still be VERY disruptive with some help at the DT position. Still a guy that very much needs to be accounted for.

He is not good enough at the moment to be our only pass rush threat regularly.

Jordan Phillips made players but he played out of position many times allow opposing teams to make plays. Jordan Phillips would not help here but just be another player out of position.
