Virgil
Just figured I’d post this since I know he was on a lot of people’s offseason wishlist as Lorax’s replacement https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/28244550/panthers-lock-lb-shaq-thompson-2023-season
NewEra
Ugh. I didn’t want him but I see that 13.5 mill price tag and compared his play to that of Milano. Milano >>>>>>> Shaq. Milano is getting paid

whatdrought
3 things- 1- Darn it. 2- I wanted him, but I didn't see it as very realistic as I think McD is pretty happy running with a two LB set and wasn't gonna pay a part time LB that amount. 3- It's strange to me that they did this... I don't understand teams in the middle of transition doing business like this.

So if I have a guy I know I want staying, I’m locking him up quick before he can start to day dream about free agency

I don't understand teams in the middle of transition doing business like this. They may try to go offense for a HC and retool that side while maintaining defensive continuity. It makes sense if they’re just retooling.... Hard to predict though, especially with their current QB situation.

If they hire a guy who brings a 3-4 defense, they're paying a pretty chunk for an off ball linebacker in a 3-4. Especially when you consider they're already paying Kuechly. It's not a horrible move, and I definitely understand it, just always puzzling to me.
NewEra
Can’t believe there are people that would want to spend 13.5 mill on Shaq Thompson. That’s just ridiculous 2

Maybe the Panthers already have their guy, but he is currently coaching some place else and wants to wait till his teams season is over to make the announcement. Would be hard to believe in this day and age where everything gets leaked.
loveorhatembillsfan4life
I think We will probably have a decent investment put into Milano and Edmunds in coming years. I think we look to replace Lorax in the draft. Beane will find us another gem.

They can't really have a guy lined up at this point either (unless he's from College) as i think there are restrictions to talking to coaches while the season is ongoing? Not that rushing the passer is Thompson's role, but the guy has 9.5 sacks in just short of 5 seasons. Also one INT. I'm partial to playmakers. The Bills need to allocate a good chunk of their resources to edge PASS RUSHERS if we're talking about the defensive side of the ball. With Stanford probably leaving too I can see a decent FA LB also being considered.

So I absolutely get this. And to be honest for most systems I would agree. But if the Bills think McDermott and Beane are here for the duration then athletic linebackers who can cover are of vital importance to the construct and integrity of this defense. I expect Buffalo to pay Milano. If there was a coaching change for some reason that judgment would change instantly.

Maybe slightly. Just don't see any reason why the Bills would be in the hunt for Milano's replacement considering he's still under contract for nothing next season. Edit; didn't realize Thompson played SAM in this system. Still, just wasn't particularly interested considering we're gonna have to allocate big resources just to retain our own. And I tend to disagree a bit in terms of what the Bills are looking for; Beane was clearly in the hunt for one of the big time DE's last offseason and I believe he will be again post 2019. More for the fact that they will likely sign Milano and Edmunds when the time comes.
Rc2catch
And this is why Carolina can’t be a good team. Dude is not that good. Why would you sign him after firing the coach? What if the new coach doesn’t want him? Just setting up for huge dead money. They just switched to a 3-4 and I’m pretty sure Shaq is playing mostly ILB. So between shaq and Kuechly they might have the highest linebacker payroll in the league for non pass rushers.

No way they can preach the process and draft and develop YOUR guys and then not resign the key players. Milano is mostly what would be considered a nobody, and very few outside of bills fans would even know who he is yet he’s a key to the success of this defense. When he’s out it’s not a very good unit. I fully expect him to get a nice top 10 salary. The only way I can see him gone is if there’s big injuries

Dont Stop Billeiving
My initial reaction was to be disappointed that we didn’t get a shot at signing this kid in FA. However, think his play has plateaued a bit to the point where he is certainly not worth that money (especially from a playmaking standpoint as another poster mentioned above). Very happy with Edmunds and Milano. Let’s draft 1-2 more and also see what we have in Vosean next year
