Baldy breaks down Oliver vs Nelson

Recommended Posts

I’m a fan, but not really his best film break down, left out some stuff imo.

This guy in unlistenable. Holy hell. Guys like this is what drove me away from TV commentating. Can anyone who covers the NFL speak like a professional, use a player's actual name (how many times can you try to be cool and hip as a dorky suburban white guy and say Big Q?), stop screaming and yelling, avoid hyperbole, and have an actual informed conversation instead of a slang-ridden, hip-hop rap take? These idiots could take some lessons from anyone cover the English Premier League, who are technically superior to any of the jokers covering the NFL.

street cred y'all....street cred...

I know what you are saying and you're right......

That was an odd statement.  He stood his ground, shed the block and assisted on the tackle at the line of scrimmage.  In which then Q piled on top after the tackle.

He also mentioned a double team that looked like a single with the oline down blocking.

How much football do you have to watch to determine a rookie O lineman (a Guard, no less) on a team outside of your division is better than all others in the NFL at his position AND better than nearly every player who has ever played that position in the games history?

I'm guessing that most of is aren't doing that, but the AP does. We're simply going off of the fact that he was an early pick that earned AP All Pro honors as a rookie.

Being a "generational talent" in sports (IMO) refers to a time frame of about 15-20 years, not 100.

I think something that was illustrated in that 11 snap performance is that there will be a good deal of double team used on Oliver.

There are only a few elite guards like Nelson or DeCastro so most teams aren't going to just double team Star Lotulelei every time just because he's bigger or even because the 3T position is a harder double team schematically.

Yes. This guy is incredible.

It's refreshing to see a guy really get into and appreciate the work these guys do in the trenches.  He's having as much fun breaking down Nelson.

I completely forgot he was lining up against Nelson.  What a great first test.

It means once in a generation talent. That would make such a player “better than every other player who has ever played” that position.  Pretty simple definition of “generational”.

I’m mostly with you in this. To say “generational talent” then get pissed at you for saying what you did is just funny. Could have just said an “all pro guard” or “future star” or “potentially the best guard in the game right now” all would mean very very good but not be in consideration of the best ever, or at least the best in the last 10-20 years. The millennial generation goes all the way back to like 1982. So... he’s the best guard since 1982 I guess.

Again "generational talent" is not synonymous with "best ever."  And 10-20 years ago isn't 1982.

With Nelson, he came in with the label as a generational talent and proceeded to live up to the expectations.  As I said, time will tell, but he's on the right path.

Wait, now Nelson is a “generational talent”?

Yes. He is a blue Chip prospect and one of the best guard prospects in the last 15-20 years..

He was the best , most polished player in his draft

I watched every snap of his career at ND and as a guard goes , prospects can't get better

Yeah, before the draft they talked about how you can’t take a guard that high,  but he’s the exception. Nelson is worth that pick, because he was that special.

And then he lived up to it.

The one difference between him and a guy like Ed... Who was also once billed as the best player in his draft

Is Nelson has exceptional hands technique rn which is crucial for the trenches

Ed has to work on his hand technique. It hopefully will come with time with a stud like him but he didn't have counters to your counter in college, and he doesn't yet either

But he will learn

Quinton Williams was considered a generation talent coming out of college. The term gets used to much in my opinion. There has been plenty “Generational” talents that turned out to be BUSTS

Examples of which would include:

Tony Mandarich (OL)

Greg Robinson (OL)

Roberto Agustin (K)

Trent Richardson (RB)

Robert Gallery (OL)

No I’m just helping you understand the term generational talent, which certainly allows for 2 at the same time...but not many others, you know, by definition.

And at what point in his career did you label Brady a generational talent?  After how many SB wins? Lol

If you want to find something to laugh about you can snicker at your nonsensical analogies. What does Tom Brady have to do with this discussion? Without question he is a generational talent but that wasn't surmised at the beginning of his career after being drafted in the sixth round. Nelson is in a different situation than Brady. He was one of the top rated linemen ever coming out of the draft. In his first season he played at an all-pro level and is currently considered to be the best guard in the NFL by almost every analyst. Your reference to Brady in this discussion is irrelevant and a distraction that has little to do with the original discussion about Nelson.

It’s funny, but I’m just now watching the game for the first time, and I read this just as Nelson got him hands on Ed’s chest and Ed had no answer. Win some, lose some, but always room to improve! Nobody said Oliver was a finished product, but I sure am loving what I’m seeing!

Heck of a draw to get Q Nelson. He is hands down an all pro guard with generational talent as well

It was pre season but you know Nelson isn't going easy

Good game to build on for Oliver... As I have been saying for a year about Oliver if there is one thing he needs to work on it's his hands with a counter move

Dude, I’ve been saying it for 2 years.

I’d say we’re at a standstill but, well (it’s an extra year).

Work on those hands big fella. Good things will come.
