Bills sign Lee Smith to 3-year deal -contract details released

They had a shell of Tom Brady and gronk. They needed to run what you call an outdated offense to win. They Planned on running that outdated offense before the season started and look where it got them. If it won a Super Bowl last year is it really outdated?

Lee smith is going to be a sub package guy. He’s not going to be the starter or used anything like gronk. Trying to compare him to gronk is a weak argument. He’s here to help the run game. Our blocking was atrocious last year and needed upgrades. A good run game helps young QBs.

1). I love the shell of Brady.  God, I would love a shell qb who completes 65% of his passes for 4,500 yards and 29 tds, which would be the greatest Season in Bills history.

2). Gronk is a great blocker and receiver.  When he is on the field, you have no idea what is coming.  When Lee Smith is on the field, you know what’s coming.  It’s called a yell and defenses key on it.  And he is such a non threat in the passing game that you can’t even trick a defense with a play action pass.

3). Oakland had a bottom 10 rushing attack.  His impact was very minimal.

Its a backup te so whatever.  But it’s mindset.  You need versatility and not guys who give away the play.  8 guys in the box isn’t going to help the running game.

Everyone is saying he is penalty prone... but he only had 3 penalties in 2018, he was on field for 283 snaps.  Then in 2017 - 5 penalties / 338 snaps.

There, that’s out of the way for the week.  Time to water the tomato seeds.

Fire everybody, Beane, McDermott, the players, fans, and the Pegulas; hire new give them one season to win a SB, if not, fire everyone again!  TBD at its best!

He caught more TDs last year than Clay did in the last two years. He’s not the future at TE. He’s a vet who can block well and catch when he needs to.

Lee can't catch.

Had 3 TDs last year. He isn’t targeted much, obviously. If you show me a big drop % then I agree he can’t catch. I don’t know what his drop % is.

Man, remember that time some two weeks ago when the Bills were thin at the TE position?

Quantity does not equal quality.  ;)

I asked in the other thread and still haven’t gotten an answer. Can someone please explain to me the advantage of a “blocking TE” as opposed to an extra tackle? No one is scared of Lee Smith in the passing game so he’s pretty much there to block. He’s not as good at blocking as an OT.

one site says his 2018 catch rate is 90+% and true catch rate is actually 100%. But he only had 11 targets all year.

my point is if he was a TE who could catch he would be targeted more. Coaches must know his numbers would be ***** if he was made an option in the pass game so that is why I say "he can't catch" as in they know he really can't and give him no chance to do it so he really can't.

This could also signal concerns about Krofty health. In reality what TE does this team really have if Kroft is not healthy? Croom and a couple rookies...

Even without knowing the details, this contract is not as bad as it first may seem.....Smith averaged $3 million/year in Oakland on his last contract, and that was signed 4 years ago. He was also PFF's #1-rated run blocking TE in 2015 (I could not find more recent stats).

While I think Knox can likely develop into a strong TE by year 2 or 3 (as has been mentioned in other threads, TX is a position that typically takes time to develop) , wouldn't be shocked to see him inactive at least the first month of the season.  So you start the year off with Croom, Kroft, and Smith.  Good chance a month into the season one of them gets hurt anyway, put him on IR, then start activating Knox.

I believe it was Limeaid posted —

Smith is a lot more mobile than most guards/tackles and will be blocking down the field for WRs/RBs when most guards/tackles would be left behind.  That is why you sign a TE like him rather than use an extra OL on play.

When he is targeted he usually catches the ball (56/66) with 7 TDs - not many guards/tackles can do that.

I wonder if this is a bigger threat to Dimarco..

Was thinking the same thing. Hope that’s the case and we save a roster spot.

The human holding penalty returns!

8 holding penalties in his NFL career. If Lee is a penalty machine, that makes me a sex machine.

Yeah if only it were just the 10 yarders.

He had 4 personal fouls in 2017 (and 2 holdings).

In his first year with the Raiders he had 5 ***** false starts.

I don't know about your sex life but he sure as hell is a penalty concern.

The Bills were ALREADY the 6th most penalized team in the NFL for the 5th most yardage in 2018...........it was a problem and this doesn't help.

After running the ball inefficiently with him in the lineup the Bills got rid of him and then immediately lead the NFL in rushing with the most explosive run game for two years.........there isn't actual strong evidence that he impacts the success of your run game.    Not worth it.

He was not on PFF’s list of top 5 run blocking TEs last season.

Saw Fisher as a possible TE/Hback.  Now definitely see Smith in this role.  So maybe DeMarco is odd man out?  Camp will tell.  New England and Alabama Offense need an HBack/FB/TE in backfield in run formations.

I do like this though!

One must remember that Bobbie Johnson, Bills OLine coach was TE coach with Raiders for Lee's first 3 years in the Black Hole.

So it's kind of a 'Fisher Stevens' thing. The Bills cut Fisher and signed Stephens. That is the moral of the story...
