Erie County to spend 3mill on updates at New Era, including new field

Just pointing this out...

I lived in Baltimore on the early 80s when the Orioles talked about building Camden Yards. At the time, everybody hated the idea, even though the old Memorial Stadium on 33rd St. was a complete s##thole. E local columnists wrote that Memorial was fine as is and has too much history to replace with a fancy place downtown.

Ten years later and everyone not only loves Camden Yards but it's a source of community pride being a destination stadium in MLB. The lesson is everyone hates change beforehand.

I could not agree more.  I lived in DC from ‘81-‘84 and went to plenty of Colts and Orioles games.  Memorial Stadium was a dump - by comparison, New Era is a palace!

But even palaces become obsolete, as people want new kitchens, newer and more bathrooms, and all the modern conveniences.

I’ll miss The Ralph, its excellent sightlines, and all the great memories, but it’s time to trade up.

Improving the field is something players will appreciate.  Add to that the major field house fitness facility upgrade, and Buffalo becomes more attractive to free agents as well.

I don't believe these expenditures by the county impact the stadium decision at all.

Yeah free agents will be lining up to sign here to play on the new turf.  Playoffs here we come

Cute response.  If you don't believe players consider things like the quality of the turf and the fitness/maintenance facilities you're kidding yourself.  It's not the only factor, but if two teams are close it could be the deciding one.

If by some chance the Bills do decide or should i say the Bills are pressured into building a new stadium sometime in the future they will have the best practice facility in the entire NFL .

I just don't understand how Buffalo fans will be able to support the big ticket prices & all those fancy new crap that is unnecessary your there to watch football & drink beer if you need to be on the internet watching your phone being a yuppy then stay home & watch the game on TV !

Just do what they did in Miami & build a roof that is retractable over the place it can be done !!

It’s a pretty simple math equation. From what I found the average ticket price at New Era Field is $69.53 (2nd lowest in the league). The capacity is 71,608. That equates to $4,978,904.24 a game and $49,789,042.40 per year. If you dropped the capacity to 66,000 and had the average at $100 (a tick below league average) you are looking at $6,600,000 per game and $66,000,000 per year. If you kept the capacity the exact same you are looking at $71,608,000 per year. You are creating an extra $20M a year ($2m a game) by just bringing the stadium to the league average. That is an average price of $1,000 per season ticket ($83.33 per month). If that is going to really hurt someone they probably shouldn’t be spending their money on season tickets to begin with.

Does your breakdown factor in the cost of PSLs?  They are a typical result of new stadium construction and they would drive me out of the market.

The city and state better get serious about funding a new stadium for this team.

There is a mich higher revenue market just waiting to be occupied in San Diego. I would hate to see the Bills move to greener pastures because of political reasons...

The New Era turf was terrible (lots of slipping)  but as I recall it they chose an off brand supplier for the product instead of one of the more we’ll known turf companies. I actually Design these fields for a living.

Was it similar to the field that the Jay's use at the Roger's Centre in Toronto? Their field had the rubber tire pellets in it that for the first year was an issue as the pellets would get thrown in the air if you slid on the field.

from what I found online, the renovations took place over 30 months or so, Packers played two home seasons in Lambeau as construction was taking place with minimal impacts. Hmm, interesting.

That being said, have no clue if that could happen in Orchard Park. Lambeau is one huge bowl with the concourse at the top of the bowl And that is where the real renovation took place. They did not have to deal with a lower bowl and upper deck. Suites etc were built were there were none before, on top of the existing bowl or in the end zones.

KC was able to stay put also, but not the Bears who played at least one at the University of Illinois stadium.

I was going to mention the Bears, I believe their stadium was almost gutted on the inside and only the exterior facade was salvaged or saved?

San Diego would have to agree to a new stadium also before this could happen....

You know what, although I cannot back it up with articles how come every time we have a low quality rated field, we upgrade it with cutting edge tech and invariably a year later the players review the league surfaces and ours is still the worst?!

For once I want to get a new field and have other NFL players come in and say, "dang, this is a great field!".

...ok...that's my minor and worthless rant.  Seriously it just bugs me because it sticks in my memory.

Wanna know what kind of turf works just fine and never needs replacing?

It’s called grass.

Yep I totally agree and I think they may have a complex like no other. A facility that houses both the bills and Sabres. Have no idea how but maybe something a long way the lines of the carrier dome but a hell of a lot nicer. Pegs may be a visionary on this one.

That that would be sweet as long as we don’t see a big tax burden for it.

I don’t remember if GB played elsewhere. The Vikings moved to the University of Minnesota while their stadium was being built. It is idealistic to believe that the stadium can be completely redone in 8 months with 3 of those months being January, February and March.  The Bills aren’t looking for cosmetic upgrades. They need to redivide the entire stadium to match up the best locations with ammentiites. A “new” version of the stadium will look nothing like what we are accustomed to. I am not sure that can be done in the short term and there isn’t a facility to house them. I suppose they could play in Toronto but we all know how well that will go over.

When the stadium was built the construction continued during January, February, & March just like the weight room addition going on now. Shelters or work areas were enclosed with chicken mesh in plastic along with heaters were used. Of course how fast any remodel would be completed would be determined by how extensive the amount of work that has to be done.  On a side note the weight room addition steel structure has been up for a month, rubber roof was put on last week, all exterior green board is done and this week installation of the wall of windows facing Abbott Road has started. The Pegulas put in $18 million last year & another $18 million this year into the stadium complex.

But will the red end zones return?

Yes...they will be painted with the blood of our 2019 opponents.

https://wgr550.radio.com/articles/news/report-bills-have-new-turf-installed-2019

The last time the turf was replaced was 2011.  At that time, the team installed what’s known as the A-Turf Titan surface, which according to the team’s website,

was considered“the top synthetic turf system available and is noted as the industry’s top performing system by providing the perfect balance of traction, foot release and unparalleled durability.”

Speaking with people with knowledge of the industry, most new synthetic surfaces have a shelf-life of 8-10 years.  Given the weather in Buffalo and the field being exposed in the winter, there’s no surprise the New Era turf would need to replaced on the earlier end of that spectrum.

Some fans have wanted to see the team return to using red end zones, as opposed to the current blue.  There’s no word on if the organization will do that or not, but I’ve been told in the past that red turf doesn’t translate onto HD-TV as well, giving off a glare that can be tougher to determine depth perception.  So, given that all games are now broadcast in HD-TV, that may be a factor the team would have to consider if thinking of changing back.

According to the report, the goal is for all of these projects to be completed by the time the Bills return from training camp in Rochester, which is usually mid-August
