Star Trek: Return of Picard?

I'm not sure how I fell about this.  My preference for TNG and Picard has been well documented over the years on TSW, but I kinda got a funny feeling a TNG/Picard reboot might end up getting Godfather Three'd

Hmm I cannot see them doing that with the rebooted Star Trek Universe with Kirk played by Pine (I actually have never seen Star Trek: Beyond not liking how they reused Khan in Star Trek V2 II).

Not really a fair statement, most of us white nerds are fond of both Captains.  But there is a debate as to which was the superior commanding officer.  A case could also be made for The Sisko.

 

The rest of the Captains are kinda like Presidents Chester Arthur or John Tyler.  Yeah they sat in the big seat at some time or another and there might be a middle school named after them somewhere, but they're not gonna make Mt Rushmore any time soon.

As a vetran Trekkie, I wish they would just leave it alone.  The re-boot movies have gotten progressively worse, and while I haven't seen all of the Discover episodes, I wont say it is bad, but it just feels like a different sci-fi franchise.  For me, everything past Deep Space 9 has been mediccre to terrible.

I can't see Stewart reprising Picard for an entire series, and I have a hard time imagining that any actual reboot of the TNG would be any good, no matter who is cast. I loved that show (the first couple seasons not so much) but I have no faith in anyone's ability to reboot it. I would vastly prefer to see what the next chapter might be for characters like Picard, Riker, Data, Worf, etc, provided it was new material set some time after the events of TNG.

 

I've been curious about the murmur over Stewart returning to the role in a movie directed by Quentin Tarantino. I don't know if that's still a thing, or even if I like that idea (but it might make for an uncharacteristically brutal Trek movie), but I haven't head anything on that front for a few months.

 

Whatever they do, as long as they stop redesigning Klingons, Romulans, and everyone else, and stop with the $#%@ing Kelvin time line, something with Picard might actually be good.

  Given the recent ST efforts I sense nothing but disappointment in any reboot.  The most recent projects involving any original cast just have been uninspiring with the worn out theme of our heroes going up against a meglo-maniac bad guy every time.  I just sense a lack of willingness by the studio to get back in the spirit of the original with in-depth perspective of the characters such as what was done with "The Naked Time", "The Galileo Seven", or "Errand of Mercy."  Employ complex characters such as Matt Decker or show vulnerable characters such as Simon Van Gelder.

  Nearly every Star Trek related effort for nearly the last 20 years has been poor.  Enterprise was very uneven but could be entertaining such as the "In A Mirror Darkly" romp where the producers just decided to go for broke including Archer wearing the wrap around tunic that the producers extended to Shatner after "The Enemy Within" to help Shatner hide his growing gut.

They should leave TNG alone.  It's literally the only Star Trek product that gets universal acclaim from both die hard and casual fans.  

 

The TNG series finale is an example of near perfect stagecraft.  The writing and acting were excellent.

Absolutely NOBODY could do a malfunctioning Data better than Walken.  I hate the overall concept of recast TNG, but this idea rocks.

I was leaning towards a Pulp Fiction version though Christopher Walken is great in every role.

I would not be a fan of bringing him back and doing something they already did right the first time.  Everything after TNG was hot garbage, but that one they got right just leave well enough alone.

J. Michael Straczynski has always seemed very protective of that franchise.  I'm unsure of how much ownership of it he retains, but before it was begun, the 5 season arc was set in place.

IIRC Stracynzski is very protective of BS because he believes Paramount stole the idea from him.  JMS first pitched his idea for a Space Station series to Paramount who said thanks but no thanks.  Then Paramount turned around and redeveloped the concept into DS9

I have always longed for a sequel to TNG with the Enterprise E and some sort of involvement in the Dominion War. When TNG was made, budgetary constraints prevented a lot of phaser fire and the like as special effects were in their infancy and super expensive. Just seeing Picard's character cast in the  dark background  DS9 and the Dominion War would be fascinating.

I think that would be a great idea, provided they could write something plausible in light of the war having basically ended with DS9's series finale. That would be an opportunity to have Sisko as a character again - maybe have him return from the wormhole/celestial temple. He could either be an ally to Picard or a foil to his plans (remember the friction between Sisko and Picard from the attack on Wolf 359). I'd like to see Garak back in action as well.

As time went on, Garak became one of my favorite characters in all of Trek. Ronald Moore has to be one of the best producers/writers in all of trek hands down. DS9 had brilliant characterization and plot lines, especially season 4 on after the show got its sea legs.

Agreed 100%. I loved the post-Cardassian war/pre-Dominion war political intrigue, and a great cast got even better by adding both O'Brien and Worf.  Garak was great from the start, and got even better as the show continued.

The Cardassian who was the main antagonist throughout the series was Gul Dukat. Garak was the one who had at one time been a high-ranking assassin in the Obsidian Order, who claimed to be nothing more than a simple tailor operating a modest clothier shop on DS9. Andrew Robinson played Garak perfectly.

'In the Pale Moonlight'.  Garak's speech to Sisko acknowledging Garak's complicity yet implicating Sisko for tacit approval of the deed remains a very powerful moment of television drama.  The story was by Peter Fields, the teleplay by Michael Taylor, who both deserve credit, but Robinson's delivery gives the scene its power.  I recall reading that episode is/was used as a discussion point in some university level classes on morality.
