20/20: Would you have traded Tredavious White for Browns' #4 pick?

Clearly the biggest surprise of Round #1 was the Browns pick #4 going for Denzel Ward instead of Bradley Chubb. Chances are the Browns were still hoping for Barkley but basically knew they were getting Ward the moment the GIants made the Barkley pick. If we had known the Browns were looking at CB at #4 (it has been widely reported they wanted a CB to allow Garrett to get to the QB), would you be willing to trade Tredavious White for the #4 pick? Not that I am not high on White (I think he will make the Pro Bowl this year if he stays injury free).

Why for the Browns: White is closer to a sure thing than Ward and still has three years on the rookie scale (at a lower salary than #4).

Why for the Bills:  1. Guaranteed to get Josh Allen  2. Would have likely gotten WARD at #12 and likely still gotten Edmunds for #22 and #65 at 16. So Bills end up with Allen, Ward and Edmunds instead of Allen, White and Edmunds. All things equal,  I prefer the latter - but remember in this trade Bills get to keep their 2 #2s and get an extra year on the rooki scale for their CB. So would you rate Ward, #53 and #56 as higher than Tre' White?

Clearly Bills had interest in Ward - they even hosted him at OBD.

typo corrected in bold

I wouldn't have traded any picks for any of the QBs that were going to be left on the board after Mayfield and Darnold.  My plan was to hope that Rosen/Allen drop to 12, if not, then BPA, if Rosen/Allen Still on the board at 22, great, if not BPA.  I would have then selected Mason Rudolph with my late second round pick(over-pick here, but not worth the risk with the 3rd round picks being a bit on the late side).

The Allen pick is growing on me, and obviously I have no choice here, but I felt all along that Rudolph and Allen were on equal ground, and Rosen being the most accurate, and balanced of the three the Bills would have a shot at.  During draft time I didn't care too much that Rosen might be a head case(See Jay Cutler), but after the draft, mu gut tells me he would have been a mistake.

My biggest fear, as with all Bills fans is that you can't teach accuracy, or more-so, instinctive accuracy with regards to Allen, but as far as a guy who has a lot of character and would embrace Buffalo as did Jim Kelly, I feel Josh Allen was the right pick after all.(even with me calling him Paxton Lynch 2.0 pre-draft)

yes, I waffled, Homey don't usually play 'dat.

I think in the scenario OP is suggesting we would trade White for #4 straight up and have picks 4, 12, and 22 as well as our second round picks.

I think you're exactly correct with the OP's scenario.

I think it's a good question whether Beane would have gone for that.  White looks good on the field.  Any player you draft, even in the 1st, is a "lottery ticket".  Maybe great, maybe solid, maybe bust.

I don't want to flagellate the equine corpse, but for me the issue with drafting Allen isn't Allen per se - I "get it" that many experts see immensely high potential.

It's that lottery ticket aspect.  Even Allen's strong fans seem to acknowledge he is a project, which makes him a lower-odds lottery ticket.  The more we gave up, the more my socks would have rotted.  As it is, I've come to terms with it because we still got a full draft slate this year, and kept next year's picks.

Beane went on before the draft about the importance of not reaching.  I think it's quite possible that whether or not he could have traded higher, Beane had Allen valued as a 10-15 pick, and went up for him because their other top QB, Darnold, was gone and he wanted to assure himself of the pick and not get "Roeth'd" into a situation of drafting #4 because he didn't have the 'nads to go for what he really wanted.

When I first read your post I thought the "guaranteed to get Allen" reference was another passive-aggressive suggestion that Allen would have definitely been available at #12, which we now know is not true. Instead, you are suggesting that they would have taken Allen at 4 (which is fine, given that we know that Beane and the Browns were in talks, but the Browns wouldn't back off wanting 12, 22 and next year's #1).

First, I would be totally opposed to trading a proven (at least after one season) player like White for a roll-of-the-dice like Ward. Second, it is highly unlikely that Ward would have made it to 12. The Broncos would have undoubtedly still taken Chubb, and based on recent reports the Colts were all in on Nelson. However, with no draft partner in Buffalo, I could see Tampa taking Ward at 7. Or the 49ers at 9. Or the Dolphins at 11.Or possibly some other team trading up...

Well if Ward is gone, maybe you get Minkah at 12. If Minkah is gone, you get Jaire Alexander at 12. The point is you get a first round CB in addition to keeping your two second rounders for Tre White

Are you suggesting so we could have gotten Chubb? Or taken Allen there? This some kind of mind game question? Tre White is a beast and I would not take ANY rookie defensive player over him. Zero chance- I feel fortunate we have him.

That's not the OP's point.

You assume the new guy will be better. Every hear the expression "don't let go to get a better grip?"

OP suggested White for the 4th pick then I assume he wanted to rest of the board to fall as it did. As I said above that wouldn’t have played out like that. Chubb/Nelson kept the Bills and other teams from trading up because Denver/Indy would have wanted a haul.

My point is that you can't entertain the draft positioning in this assumed scenario where the Bills' day one draft board holds to actual draft day form, because nothing's in play that would allow a move up to 7.

There's no mention of any trades that would enable the Bills to land the 7th pick from the 12th spot, but the two 2nd rders that were actually involved in the Bills moving up, have been removed from the equation; therefore you can't entertain Josh Allen falling to the Bills at 7.

To me, the 'guarantee' of Allen to the Bills with the exclusion of the two second round picks reads as though the OP believes the Bills could have had Allen at 12 without making any moves.

Ward at 4, Allen at 12, and Edmunds possibly at 16 still is how his scenario reads to me.

It’s an interesting thought (and the Browns would have Gaines and White). I wouldn’t have done it though (and I’m high on Ward). I think that White is a better fit in our system and a core piece. I wouldn’t trade core pieces in a rebuild for draft capital.
