Elway Open to a Deal for the #5 Pick; Broncos' Board Finalized Later Today

Recommended Posts

If you look at the list of pre-draft visitors for the Broncos, they had Barkley and a bunch of quarterbacks. The rest of their visits where more of the mid first round variety. No Nelson and no Chubb. I just thought that was kind of interesting.

The Dolphins met with Mayfield six times apparently. Should be a crazy draft.

Broncos want to build that defense up again. The quickest way possible is for them to have two firsts this year. Only two teams can offer that and Buffalo (take out Cleveland for obvious reasons) by far is the better package. I think it's almost a done deal that this is where we pick.  I wonder how much more we would have to give up, but I don't think it would be too much considering our package with the two firsts is already better than what anyone else could offer.

I think we met with Mayfield about 6 times as well.

Actually no, best scenario would has been to be at 3 spot already

Well no, the best scenario would have been to finish with the worst record and own the 1st overall pick. That didn't happen either , and had about the same chance or worse of the Bills getting the 3rd pick from the Colts . The Jets interest in pick 3 meant that wasn't happening for the Bills. Fans need to realize that some things ( such as the draft order and what other teams are willing / unwilling to do) are out of OBD control.

...not getting to see collegiate ball (Mayfield) due to work schedule, I'm trying to get my arms around the "Baker Phenomenon" from what I read here at TBD and elsewhere.....first, it sounds like he's a product of the spread or typically shotgun formation...how does it differ SUBSTANTIALLY from the dreaded, leper like Air Raid?...subtle or substantial?.....abundance of posts state ""I want" but do we have a clue what McBeane/McD/McDaboll want?......what shows Baker has the MENTAL aptitude (KEY prerequisite IMO) to perform at this level as far as the speed and complexity of the NFL game?....perhaps MORE importantly, WHICH candidate appears to excel at that over and above his competition?.......

One factor to consider about all the QB's coming out of college is that in the last several years NFL offenses have been adapting to the college game more and more. The "shotgun" is now in use in the NFL much more so than in previous years. I think I read somewhere that Brady for example was in the "shotgun" something like 70 % of the time which is similar to what these college QB's are doing in the college game...

....good find...very interesting statistic....collegiate ball is no longer the NFL's developmental league (too cheap to start one like NHL or MLB with multiple levels)....so the collegiate mantra is what puts butts in the seats, makes mega boosters happy and leads to a mega millions bowl invites.....and I have my doubts as to whether NFL QB Coaches have the ability to help a kid make ahe transition which may take longer than their patience will endure....

I dunno - those two from Cleveland would be mighty appealing, and the points work out: 4+1=5

get Russ on the phone we need to get ahead of this

Giants and Broncos take QB’s.

Take it to the bank.

That is not clear at all. The Broncos seemed to announce the other day that the 5th pick is definitely available... They have Keenum for at least two years and can use that time to develop Lynch. In the meantime they could use the extra picks ( maybe 12 and 22) to rebuild other areas of their team... And if Cleveland takes Darnold at #1 the giants may also be inclined to want to trade out of #2... Cleveland may still be interested in trading the #4 pick as well...We will soon find out...

The attached link is a seven minute clip of the Oklahoma/Oklahoma St. game It was a shootout with Mayfield and Rudolph leading their respective teams. You can get a sense of the accuracy level of both qbs. The challenge is to determine if this wide-open no defense allows you to judge if the qb play transfers to the pro game.

...thanks....I'm suspect if an isolated one game film versus a far wider body of work is fair enough to judge on IMO........in the spirit of FULL disclosure, I do not get to see college ball so I am impartial......

How Mayfield played in this game is how he played all season long. It is reflective of his body of work. Again, the issue for the evaluators is does his dynamism in college translate to the pro game. I believe if smartly deployed it will translate to the pro game.

...thanks bud......maybe all of these fears and trepidations about the spread, continual shotgun, Air Raid, etc are unfounded.....to me, it ALL depends on what Intel chip a kid has between his ears as far as adaptability.....as far as Mayfield, I'm just a crusty and moldy 'ol poster in year 56 of following this club, stuck here a postin'...McBeane is at OBD for probably $2+ mil a year so ball is in his court...stay tuned bud.....

I don't want to belabor the topic but the one thing that sticks out when watching him (saw at least four games on TV) is his level of accuracy. Not only does he complete a large percentage of his passes but his ball placement is exceptional. In every game I saw him he was the standout player except for one game. The freshman qb for Georgia in the bowl game reminded me of what a young Tom Brady clone would look like. Again, the issue comes down to whether his college game transfers to the pro ranks. I believe so.

Mayfield is not my most preferred qb. I would prefer either Darnold or Rosen ahead of him. If in the end we selected Mayfield I would be ecstatic. Without question the fans of western NY would embrace Mayfield's game and feistiness.

If Denver, who needs a franchise QB, wants to move out, why do you want that pick for a QB?

You would think out of anyone in the league, Elway and Kubiak would know what a QB looks like. But look at their track record. It's embarrassing. They have no idea what they are doing when it comes to QB

They have been picking late and taking “swings” at QB like many here say a good franchise should.  Neither Osweiler nor Lynch were picked early and were more shots taken on physical talented players rather than high risk gambles early in the draft.

which is why they are sticking with Keenum. They have had too many draft fails.

Report: Three NFL teams have called Broncos about draft trade

Mike Klis of 9News reported Sunday that the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and Arizona Cardinals have called the Broncos to gauge their interest in trading the No. 5 overall draft selection.

Dolphins in the mix of the QB Competition too. No way any of the Big 4 fall past #8, and certainly not to us at #12. Almost looks like the TBD No Trades Mock got it right.
