Our cap situation is such that we could have retained him and the books get much more clear next year, I understand disputing his value, but it's clear he's a very good player in the midst of his prime. Every argument I've seen made for letting him walk is bunk IMO and you are exactly right, using high draft resources to replace him at the cost of positions that have gone unaddressed for a long time leaves us no better off. Either we are a franchise that values corners with high draft picks and we retain the ones who can play, or we don't value them and need to stop using picks on them, but QB, WR, RT have been problems on this team for the better part of 2 decades.had Gilly been worth what he was seeking, he would have been retained. he wasn't, so he wasn't. pretty simple really. I mean who in the AFC do your really put ahead of the Bills in a roster assessment? The Patriots obviously, the Steelers (although that's close) and maybe the Raiders?? What we really need is those guys on the outside to go to work. I'd like to see SJ come back on a cheap deal and see this kolby listenbee prospect become more than a mystery. We know what we have in certain things. The run game will be there...we have a legit #1 WR that alot of teams don't have. My gut feeling is McDermott knows what he's doing right now and is with the times I liked Chan, Marrone and to a lesser extent Jauron but you get the sense that these guys never had the whole picture and squandered their opportunity. They all had the right idea but went about it the wrong way IMO. Sean to me seems like a combination of rex and the hard-nosed approach that all coaches should have. Based on everything i read about him he seems to know when to be the friend yet also knows when to be the boss. Rex only wanted to be the friend. You won't win consistently with that. I just don't get that vibe with this young blood. Looks like the right guy for Buffalo, and it's long, loooooongg overdue The only teams I think we're better than right now are the Texans, Browns, and Jets. All the other teams either have better QB's, or better overall rosters with QB's comparable to Tyrod Taylor. (That's an unbiased, non-koolaid-drinking opinion.) stuvian Posted March 19, 2017 Share Posted March 19, 2017 our team got two years older, not better under Wrecks. On D we have Alexander, Hughes and Kyle Williams and a bunch of guys. On offense we have a high mileage Shady, fragile Sammy and a decent o-line. We are not set at QB and will need at least 8 games before McDermott's scheme makes sense to our players. I really like the HC hire but he'll need 3 seasons to get us over .500. I see us at 6 wins this year barring a Romo signing. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

More importantly, all of those teams (except Cincy and Baltimore) have quality #2 WRs and most have #3 WRs who would be well ahead of our "#2". Corrects. And they also have better QBs too. Do any of them have our running game? We've got it get it done in a different way due to our QB situation. Balt's Mike Wallace had the 15th most receptions in the AFC last year and over 1,000 yards Steve Smith 16th To me that qualifies as a #1 WR however if you disagree and want to remove one from a list of quality #1 WR's so be it You can likely replace Balt with Jacksonville and Robinson The point is 75% of the AFC has #1 WR's some with way better statistical stats than Sammy Watkins To claim our AFC opponents don't have #1 WR's is off base jc Ok. You can have Mike Wallace as a number 1. He was on a team that couldn't run the ball. He was their best WR. Of course he's going to get stats. 15th most in the AFC.....lol. Did you really use that as evidence of him being a true #1. That's ridiculous. He was competing for catches with a WR ready to retire and a breshard perriman. Stevie Johnson posted similar stats for the Bills. He was never a #1. Was was our #1. You must be confused as to what a true #1 WR is. And there is no evidence of it causing further detriment to the team. The Bills have done pretty well identifying good (not great mind you) corners over the years. it's merely a down-shift in cap hit (a cap management strategy) due to the original cb pricing himself off the team. I am happy with signing TT BUT we absolutely NEED a competant backup QB. Cardale is NOT "ready" and I don't see us spending $$$ on one in FA. I think W & McD have their eye on someone in the draft. chris heff Posted March 19, 2017 Share Posted March 19, 2017 I tried to be hopeful about Ryan, the minute he was announced as the Bills coach my brother called him a blow hard, he was right. Ryan's defense was bad. People keep pointing out the players that were let to walk or cut, Gilmore is the only one that I think you can make an argument for, but he didn't have a great year. Some of it can be blamed on Ryan's "genius", but it is hard to blame poor tackling on that. What about Lawson and Ragland? Yeah Lawson looked lost, but so did some veterans. Can we give these guys the benefit of the doubt? My gut tells me the defense will be better. Did everyone forget that Ryan fired the OC after two games? By the way the offense didn't lose the Jet game, the defense did. Ryan should have fired himself. Taylor's inability to throw a slant is infuriating, but last season's WR situation was bad. Watkins injured and after him the only legitimate guy was Woods, who is a nice third, but certainly not a first or second. They need to find a legitimate second, if they do the guys they have signed have to be better than last year's street FAs. My gut tells me the offense will be better. As for special teams I think a new long snapper will make all the difference, just kidding. New kicker with same problem as the old one, same punter and same coach. There's certainly grey areas there. You still cannot or atleast haven't argued how that strategy is not sound. And as I said I don't always agree with it.
