I Don't Feel Like Playing Today

Going back to last year with Goodwin, Sammy, Dareus and McCoy ... and up to this current week ... it seems that Rex has created an environment in which players can just "opt out," of a game, as if it's a Common Core exam.

In a league that players ALWAYS play injured, this bothers me.

There is no such thing as 100% healthy in the NFL. Everyone knows this.

But to this day, on most teams, players play through those injuries.

The Bills, however, don't seem to set that expectation. As a fan, it's disheartening.

Gugny, I hear ya. But a RB trying play three a Hammy issue would hurt the team a lot more than it would help. This is when you hope the team has built decent depth around them.

Also Sammy issue has to be serious since he is on IR and seen numerous doctors. (That orbits all in his head which I doubt)

The other two you have valid points.

As a fan who is not intimately familiar with the medical situations of Bills' players on a week to week basis, I fan this thread to be preposterous.

Always...

Except when they don't play when they are injured.

According to injury reports players that have played "hurt" this season thus far for the Bills:

Sammy Watkins

Robert Woods

Shady McCoy

Charles Clay

Cordy Glenn

Jordan Mills

Corbin Bryant

Zach Brown

Ronald Darby

Aaron Williams

Kevin Seymour

Jerel Worthy

Yup, sure seems common in Buffalo that players "opt out"

(Honestly can't roll my eyes enough at this)

EDIT:

Sorry, players who have been injured and haven't played or "sat out"(not including players on IR or PUP):

Marcell Dareus

Sammy Watkins

Cyrus Kouandjio

Well having pulled my hamstring a few times - You really can't run very well. As for Watkins foot - he was playing with it... just constantly limping around so what was the point? He wasn't the player we needed him to be.

Sammy's injury and placement on IR was attributable to pain tolerance (it was confirmed that he couldn't do any more damage to the foot). So he was unable to cope with the pain. The OP may have a point (unlike Rothlisburger who has a torn meniscus, Hoyer with broken arm, etc. more serious injuries).

Dareus is...well, he's Dareus. He can't play because he needs to get himself back into game shape (did you seriously expect him to workout over those 4 weeks?)

I think Shady is taking it easy...he had himself a career game (3 TD's)...he's relaxing the legs for the week.

Where is DC Tom when you need him?

This is a bunch of hooey. The only people who can make a decision are the doctors, trainers, and the player, and the team has an interest in sitting a player if he's 1) not able to be effective 2) playing will prolong injury or higher risk of reinjury

Candidly speaking, I think you can remove Shady and Goodwin from your commentary. They both have serious heart, and they both are warriors. The other two, jury is very much out.

If Shady misses this weekend, I am honestly not worried about a major drop off. I like what I have watched from Gilles. Not saying that we can easily replace Shady. With our O Line, Tyrod's ability to escape and how Gilles has already filled in, I think we will be OK.

Shady is a true professional and plays when he's able to do so and Sammy is on IR. I don't know enough about Dareus' situation to say he's just dogging it and it's probably better that Goodwin doesn't practice since he's made of glass.

When I played I never heard of someone not playing because of a hamstring or hurt foot. That would have been comical. I broke every finger and they would just tape it up and send me back out. I remember I missed a practice to get an x-ray on said finger and the coach flipped out on me like I was being a wimp. If your hamstring hurts then jog it off. If you have a concussion then sniff some smelling salts. If you have a broken arm then wrap your cast with some padding and use it like a club. I understand what the OP is saying. Football used to be a man's game. The woosification of America has leaked into the sport and the players are soft imo.

Sammy's injury and placement on IR was attributable to pain tolerance (it was confirmed that he couldn't do any more damage to the foot). So he was unable to cope with the pain.

Oh, do tell. Where was this confirmed and where was this attributed? All that I've seen confirmed is that a second surgery was not recommended by foot specialist Robert Anderson at this time.

At one point when he was quoted as saying he'd keep playing, it was said to be an issue of pain management. Then he missed practice after someone allegedly stepped on his foot, then he went on IR.

The bottom line is, we don't really know what triggered his placement on IR. The Bills and Watkins were very close-mouthed about what the original injury was (reported as "stress fractures" only after the surgery was announced) and when it occurred. They only announced the surgery when it was clear he'd miss mandatory mini-camp. Pain usually indicates injury, and most injuries can, in fact, get worse or at best be prevented from healing, while the athlete continues to use them.

By the way, stress fractures often can't be seen on an ordinary xray. Something major, like an acute fracture or a broken screw, yeah, but stress fractures often can't be detected until they start to heal - a bone scan or MRI may pick them up. Example [On the left, can't see a fracture. On the right, after 3 weeks, can see callus formation with arrow pointing, sign of fracture healing at location where it couldn't be seen]
