He's not dead wood. He is just expensive for what he brings.

They could get creative. He wants to play 3 more years.

They could meet each other half way and give him a fully guaranteed 1 extension at vet minimum. Turn this year's salary into a signing bonus to lower his overall cap hit. Tell him to get all the guarantees he needs to retire after this season or the next.

They need to lower his cap hit. Jackson would have teams interested in him if he were released but no one would be giving him $3 mil this year.

His cap hit is $1.1 million LOWER than last season, and 25th in the NFL overall. Before the McCoy trade, the Bills were willing to pay a stiff like Spiller over $4 million. Freddy is a UFA next season. Pay the man his money and let's get on with business of building a winner.

we will see if thats a blessing or a curse. i dont really want terry having hands on our depth chart, honestly.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft, in 1996, at the behest of his wife, cut Christian Peter just days after the team drafted him.

The move was all about character, leadership, and morals.

Keeping Freddy is also about character, leadership and morals.

As long as Terry keeps his direct personel involvement to a few isolated issues like this, I don't forsee it being a problem.

I dont care if Fred Jackon is 34 years old. I dont care if he isnt what he used to be.

This guy is is a fan favorite, a humbling guy who never gave up on the dream.

Our franchise owes this man 1 thing before its ok to let him go: Get him into the playoffs

Until we accomplish that mission fred jackson should be on this roster until he physically can't play the game anymore."

BTW if we do ever get into the playoffs and go on a run. I guarantee fred will somehow someway have something to do with it.

a bunch of watched up players

But Freedie's far from watched up!

IMO, he can still provide a great deal of value to this team as a pass blocking thrid down specialist or even if he's inactive on Sunday's and is just leading by example during the week. He'd be a great utility guy for another year. And then you can find a Bilal Powell or any other dime-a-dozen replacement in 2016...

but if he views business as pleasing fans in march instead of giving coaches/gms what they want for the season...... well, that might not be best for business.

again, for THIS instance, its a smart move...this is a once in a lifetime type instance (for this coach/franchise in this exact time and place)

and keeping Fred does nothing to stop the coaches/gm from what they want for the season

Freds little 3 million will not stop us from pursuing any FA at any positions

it simply keeps a good thing going for the business

If having to listen to your boss the one time he puts his foot down creates discord, the problem isnt with the boss.

if you are an IT engineer and your boss is a finance guy, do you want him dictating code to you?

its a fine line. especially if "the one time" is like the 4th move youre making and after you already game planned the project and started executing.

again with a big disclaimer that its an IF and we know very little about the situation

the GM and coaches were doing their jobs, in determining Jackson's value to the current team.. it has to be on the owner to thank them all for their well-thought out arguments on releasing the player, and then insist they find a way to make it work. because every fan knows that Freddie has often been the only bright spot on this team over the last few years - and the Pegulas are big fans

ive pretty clearly not been concerned with the cap here. 3m is a lot for a #2 rb (or possibly in this case 3 or 4), but not going to break us.... the issue that would nag me if true that the GM/coach want the move and owner vetoed are

1) if keeping fred active sits a RB they want to use more (brown) or when listing the 45 makes it so they carry 4 active and sit someone else that couldve contributed -- thats frustrating

2) the door being opened leaves wonder where the line will be on owner pushing roster

3) if the owner doesnt trust his GM to handle this, why is he our GM

still with the disclaimer that we dont know whaley was pushing this hard, or terry overruled him - just talking hypotheticals

I would be sad but if he was given a legitimate shot to make the roster then that's life in the NFL. I think there would be a problem with people claiming he wasn't given a chance.

if we hold him til august and cut him - and in hindsight he wouldve had a better shot to make someones 53 if released today, would that bug you?

I think "dictating code" would be more along the lines of Pegula ordering that Jackson be played. I don't think stepping in to prevent him being cut in March is anywhere near that level of micromanagement.

I get the possible criticism of not wanting to have a "meddling" owner. We've seen how there are some owners in this league that due to their nature of wanting to be involved in some of the day to day decisions that it has in many cases negatively impacted the well-being of the team. This in my view seems to be a little different, even though it's apparent that Jackson is a player on the decline he still provides value apart from on the field but his symbolic and intangible (leadership, fan happiness) impact is a bit difficult to quantify. The owner stepping in protecting his interests and that of the fans in my view makes this case perfectly acceptable.

long story short, its different because in this instance you like it :)

essentially your argument is that you think that the fans and terry know more about fred jackson and the locker room than our GM and/or coach..... which is possible. sometimes even the great ones flub decisions, but thats essentially the argument here when not danced around?

I love what Fred brings in regards to intangibles, but forgetting all that, and strictly speaking in regards to on-field play, how could anyone think that he's not better than Bryce Brown? I don't understand the front office wanting to cut him, especially if they are in "win now" mode.

His salary is paltry in the grand scheme of things.
