Alex Smith compared to Matt Moore

Recommended Posts

Here is something I would like opinions on.......

How would you compare the talent level of Alex Smith to Matt Moore.......

Now....there has to be some difference one is a starter and the other one is not

Just food for thought though....Greg Roman seemed to fix what was wrong with Alex Smith and he has gone on to be a competant starter

Alex Smith was a #1 overall pick.

Matt Moore was undrafted.

One of these things is easier to "fix" than the other

There both white?

We should be comparing Matt moore to Josh McCown. That's more of the same league. In the little time Moore has played he already has had a few season ending injuries. Smith is a much smarter game manager (if that's what you want out of Moore) who is accurate and doesn't throw interceptions. Moore has close to a 50/50 TD/INT rate.

As the individual pointed out above the sample size is so small as well it is impossible to predict but it points to him not being a very good QB.

there is no comparison. Alex Smith was a highly recruited former #1 pick with a ton of talent. Matt Moore is not as talented but has been a competent backup. Matt Moore has already reached his potential, there is not untapped potential in there like with Alex Smith. maybe you can use that comparison on someone like Sanchez who was a former top 5 pick

Probably meaningless but my lasting impression of him is from Hard knocks in Tannehill's rookie year, when he was told shortly before a preseason game he was starting. He seemed surprised and like "oh sh*t" - like he wasn't prepared. Lol.

:doh::lol:

Alex Smith will not throw the football down field which is why the chiefs can't win games late. There "2 minute" offense consist of 9 handoffs to Charles- there was discussion of cutting Smith prior to the March date of his new contract kicking in. The back up Chase Daniels has done a nice impression of Smith when given the chance to play but he's a back up making 4.8 million so if they stick with Alex Chase will be cut loose (ha). Murray is there 3rd stringer for now. Bottom line is Smith is really no better than 90% of the free agents currently available IF you have the good defense, good oline and a power running game he can be affective. It's the ingredients a lot of teams play on - you will beat the bad teams and most of the teams your better than gets you to 9-7 if the schedule smiles on you 10-6 playoffs are usually possible but it's a one and out. A loaded defense like Seattle and you get the kiss hello super bowl

Where these guys were drafted makes no difference to me. I've long opined that Matt Moore has been the best Dolphins QB since he's been there. I consider Alex Smith to be better than Moore, but simply because he's had the chance to prove it. I'd love to be able to get Moore in Buffalo to join the competition.

I think they're different in style of play, Smith is a more a like a game manager, he takes care of the ball and he's a great athlete, hence you can design some plays to hurt teams with his legs. He's not a great intermediate passer, so his game is based on short passes, misdirection and lots of YAC.

Moore is more like a gunslinger, his play is more vertical than Smith's but I don't know if he can be the guy for 16 games. There's no much data to form an opinion. Would he be a great back-up? Sure, don't know if he would be a capable starter for a long stretch.

Why do we always expect that the new QB coach / OC can fix a QB? That somehow his style of coaching or new type of offense will make an iota of a difference?

It hasn't happened here in 15 years. We've probably had more than a dozen QB's and even more QB coaches and OC's. Promises of the QB will fit the style, we will use the QBs strengths, we will improve the line / run game and they will turn into winners, the QB can run, the QB will stay in the pocket, the QB just needs to throw it away and go on to the next play, "we will dictate to the defense" is always a good one, on and on and on....

The truth in fact is that the QB usually regresses. But every off-season we drink new Kool-Aid.

It didnt happen here....it happened in San Fran. And we just aquired the OC of San Fran

Alex Smith was considered a total bust at one point

The Chiefs lose games becasue their HC is a ntoriously bad in-game manager. He's a total clown.

Matt Moore? He's a carreer backup who has attempted 10 passes in the past 2 years--29 in the past 3. What are people using to make the comparison? His season 4 years ago?

He doesn't exist.

At one point Scott Chandler was an unknown sitting behind 2 other starting TE's as well.....

Now....Scott is a low tier starting TE in the league....but he is a starter non the less.....and was hidden as someones backup at one point

Agreed. It may sound crazy but how about bringing in two free agent quarterbacks and let them battle it out with EJ?

Blaine Gannett > Kurt Warner

So Kurt Warner was a backup for 7+ years that didn't show much of anything and then all of a sudden became a star? Nope he was a star the whole time he was just overlooked. Bad comparison. Matt Moore has never been a star and never will be. He's lucky to be in the league

Gabbert was a top 10 pick; Warner went undrafted and was out of the league bagging groceries having reached his potential. Gabbert has so much yet to be tapped into.

Kurt Warner wasn't a backup for 7 yrs bouncing from team to team and playing mediocre football along the way. He was a star in the arena league and a star in the NFL. Bad comparison

Gabbert's best chance at getting tapped into would be in prison; not in the NFL.

You argued draft position then you changed the criteria when that approach was reduced to absurdity.

I didn't say anything about Matt Moore's draft position. Reading is fundamental. I only mentioned Alex Smith's as another example of how talented he is. Not all #1's are. He is. He went #1 because he had raw talent and even though he didnt run a pro style offense in college the potential was always there given the right development. You are quick to go on the attack. Perhaps next time show a little more respect to fellow posters instead of trying to grandstand

You guys do realize that Mark Sanchez might be the best we are gong to be able to do

Sadly, I do. Locker is the only other decent FA option. I like him better than Sanchez as a QB, but the odds of him staying healthy are not good. And I'm being generous there. With Rex's history with him it makes a lot of sense to get Sanchez to Buffalo.

I reread the post and you're right. You didn't mention draft position. My fault.

What do you expect when you go dumpster diving for a qb? You certainly are not going to find an impressive piece of filet mignon; your are more likely to come up with a half eaten McBurger. This is what happens when you use a first round pick on a qb and then realize that you better have a backup plan. When an organization has to resort to Kolb and Orton type qbs to take the snaps you know that you are not in a position of strength so much as a position of desperation. The shame of this qb situation is not that we are in this situation but that we have been in this situation for so long. It's such an absurdity.

That is easy to say, but besides Russell Wilson, who is it that they had a good opportunity to draft and failed to do so? I'll grant that they were close to in position to get Dalton or Kaepernick, but I think both went before Bills' pick in 2nd round. Not sure either are a great answer, either

And now we're hoping Matt Moore can be an answer? Dear Flutie, save us.

Mark Sanchez was the reason the Jets didn't go to the SB. He was terrible. We saw his max in Philly under Kelly and it wasn't good. He loves turnovers like he loves underage girls.

No one is looking for an "answer"... People are looking for a 1 year stop gap that can play at a level that won't hurt the rest of the team.
