No Holding Calls on the Pats?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Livinginthepast's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I mentioned to a couple of people, from the point where there was around 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter to the end of the game, the Falcons should have taken a page out of the Pats playbook and fake an injury every 3rd down or so to give their defense a rest. Watch the video of how the soccer players do it, flail your arms back and forth, roll over a few times, wait till the priest comes out and gives last rites, let them cart you off on the stretcher, then come back two plays later. I believe that's what really cost Atlanta the game, their defense was gassed. -
Hire Matt Patricia!!!
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to ROONDOGG55's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well the 31 owners would tend to disagree with you. The owners game Roger this power as did the NFLPA. The problem is in todays society no one will accept punishment for anything so the first time you're punished for anything you take it to court, where as 25 years ago people would have accepted it. And in most of these cases, there isn't enough evidence to hold up in court. Now you could argue that should be enough, accept my understanding is the NFLPA agreed to let Roger be the sole arbiter in these cases. So then after agreeing to this, they go to court. You mention Bountygate. Do you really believe the Saints did absolutely nothing wrong, or was there just not enough "legal proof" which again shouldn't matter since they gave the commissioners office this power. -
Hall of Fame finalists announced - TO in Final 15

Don't disagree with many. I do recall at the time, there were those who had commented that Marv got elected due to his involvement with the media after he stopped coaching and that helped him get elected. Well Aikman's number compare pretty close with Warner as far as years played, and record, so guess you can argue if one made it in, both should be in. I've said for years it's too hard to get into the Baseball HOF and too easy to get into the Football HOF -

Can someone give me the names of a few players who could have played in the NFL, but instead voilunaraily chose the Arena League, NFL Europe, or even the Canadian league to play in, then I'll start considering Warners years in the Arena league towards his HOF credentials. Just Googled Kurt Warners Playing career and Professional career. In both cases no mention of Arena League years, just NFL The off field story had more to do with him getting voted in than what he did on the field in a somewhat short career. -

So you're saying: He could have gone to the NFL, but voluntarily chose the Arena league or where ever it was before the NFL so we should count all those years? That he didn't end up the starter only after Trent Green blew out his ACL and when Vermeil cried in the press conference announcing Green was out for the year it was really tears of joy that now he could start Warner? A 12 year career which only six of the 12 season had a record of better than .500 and three times with three different teams being benched and replaced is HOF caliper?? He was inducted into the Arena League HOF BTW Not saying he absolutely doesn't belong in the HOF, but do think he's marginal career, likely the back story helped sway some votes his way. -

The only way he was forced was no NFL team wanted him, that's a far cry from forced to do anything. Not sure it was him that revitalized two teams as much as he was there at the right time when the team was able to bring in a large amount of talent. If I recall correctly, didn't he even start the season in St Louis as the backup but the starter got hurt (Trent Green was it), so Warner took over. Seem to recall everyone was mourning after they lost their starter and how a great team and season was now going to go downhill. But Warner led them to a SB win. My biggest grip about Warner is a very short NFL career. Yes I get that it's the "Pro" Football HOF not the NFL but until someone gets voted into Canton who played their entire league in one of these other leagues, I'll base it on what he did in the NFL which to me wasn't that much. I think his story got him elected more than actually what he's done on the field. -
Rename the Lombardi Trophy
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to bobobonators's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well considering most of his career was spent before the Super Bowl was ever even played zero, however his over all stats were: 3 NFL titles, 10 playoff appearances in 21 seasons Which is pretty good. He did coach 8 seasons with the Bengals in the SB era and went to the playoffs three times. That's also is pretty impressive when you consider the Bengals were an expansion team, in fact he won a division title there in the 3rd season, first year in the NFL post merger. More importantly was his innovation he added to the game. I suppose the fact that he never played or won a Super Bowl would disqualify him from having the trophy named for him. But do think naming it the Lombardi trophy isn't really warranted either as three of his championships were also pre-Super Bowl era too and from everything I've seen of the guy his coaching style was to be a bully which was certainly more acceptable back then. Personally I think it would be much more justified if it was called the Chuck Noll or Bill Walsh trophy. Maybe coach of the year should be called the Paul Brown trophy! -
Rename the Lombardi Trophy
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to bobobonators's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Was talking about this recently with someone at work. Really don't understand why it's not called the Paul Brown trophy?? Lombardi was great, but for a rather small period of time. Paul Brown has changed the game over the years with innovation. Lombardi was more a bully than a motivator or innovator, but that was the in style back then. Everyone ate it up. -
Sure just like that! Couple things, every year, next years draft id the best QB draft ever. So they go 4-12, how do you know you're getting this franchise QB that you think is out there. I'm sure many scouts & front office folks were talking about what a great QB draft you had the year Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf went 1 and 2. The only other year came close was drew Bledsoe and Rick Mirer believe also went 1 and 2 It's all Whaleys fault for not finding that guy . If it was as easy as you and many others make it sound every team in the league would have a franchise QB! As others have said with the talent on the team and even a Brian Hoyer, the team could still win 6 or 7 games, and maybe draft again around #10. Though really even at #10 they have almost as much chance as any at findign that guy as more luck than anything.

is rex the biggest douche bag coach ever?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to nuklz2594's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
In all seriousness, could much of Rex's issues be attributed to his dyslexia? He's admitted that he suffers from it, maybe it effected him in ways he didn't realize, would cause him to spout off at the mouth much more than a normal person in that position would. -
Bills add 5 coaches
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Egorugwu, attended college at the football hotbed of William Jewell, so look out for him!! I C one coach is listed as an assistant QB coach, did we name an actual QB coach already, did I miss it.. Never mind, just saw the answer! -
Bills blow out remaining coaches
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Amazing, watching EPSN and on their bottom Crawler, one of their "big" stories. "Bills don't retain Kathryn Smith as coach" Nothing mentioned about the others, just her was let go according to the story. I get it, but still makes you shake your head! -
I think Chan ran a really complicated offense that took a Harvard grad at QB to understand. The problem was while his brain could handle it the arm couldn't. If he'd had an arm to go with that brain, likely Gailey would still be coaching here as we'd made some playoff trips.

Rex's house hits the market
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to papazoid's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wonder what the average income of Orchard Park would be if you excluded all the Bill's players. I'm sure still very high compared to the surrounding area, but wouldn't be surprised if it dropped $30 to $40k. I suppose if you're looking in the area and decide that Mario's house at $3.X mil is too steep could always "settle" for this one! -
RT Riley Reiff ?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Can't see it happening unless all 32 teams view him strictly as a RT as some team will come offering him LT type money and want to play him there. Also makes me a bit nervous taking a guy who's only played RT one season. Thought I had read the RT from Baltimore is also a FA this season? -
LOL!! So are you trying to convince others that the Bills are the only team in the league that cuts players? If the Bills let him go prior to March 3rd, they are cutting him, just like a hundred or more other players in the league will be cut by all 31 other teams. Many will be cut around that same time too for bonuses that kick in and their current team doesn't feel the yare worth paying. Sorry but this has to be one of the most ridiculous arguments I've seen!
-
OK but then who would you be happy with? Typically every year there are two groups of potential coaches available, coaches like McDermott and Dennison who've never been HC or coordinators and teams will give them a shot. Or you have retreads like Rex, Chan Gailey, Marrone, and many other similar names who've failed elsewhere and the next team to hire them hope they will do much better. So your choice is a re-tread or someone who's likely never really run things. Sometimes the re-treads learn and improve, and some first time coaches do very well. IMO the number of re-treads that improve their 2nd time around is lower than the number of brand new coaches who succeed.

Chiefs WR coach = Bills QB coach
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Maybe they're going to pull a page out of the Rex playbook and bring in an asst. QB coach who does have experience at that position?? -
Is Kraft OK? Seems like all of a sudden he sounded very old, words came out a bit slurred?? No idea how old he is??

Dennison's zone blocking scheme
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Original Byrd Man's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So do you think he's never going to sign another contract?? Unless that's the case, then of course it's an issue. -
Maybe, but I think it was more a case of TP didn't want him to be the head honcho so his ego wouldn't allow him to take the job then so came up with this story. There also was speculation as to how him taking another job with any team could delay him getting into the hall. Maybe if he were to get job as GM, he's take that chance, but not to become the second in command reporting to the assistant ball boy. Wasn't worth it to him and could understand that.
