The two #1 seeds in the NFL right now are led by new head coaches, and not so coincidentally those two coaches were the most popular McDermott replacement options brought up last year. There's a pervasive myth that turning around a team takes several years. It really doesn't though. Good systems work right away and if anything the newness of those systems will catch teams off guard in that first year.

People forget that Tomlin + HOF QB equaled 2 SB berths and one win during the era of Manning and Brady. Plus Big Ben had some great success later in his career too.

 

The current Steelers team is old, tired, overpaid, and just done. Watt is not the same guy this season as he has been, nor is Hayward. Their last couple OCs have been bad, but they also have an awful OL and barely any threats on offense to throw to or run the ball. 

 

A buddy of mine is a huge Steelers fan so I see a lot of their games and talk a lot of Steelers ball. They are not a good team. Their defense is so-so at best and their offense struggles to string together 7-8 play drives. 

 

As much as Steelers fans hate Tomlin, I think he coaches up a 6-11 team to 9-8 each season. That isn't a 11-6 roster.

Not saying it cant be done - but those are 2 teams who had a lot of cap space and top 10 draft picks.  Lets see if either makes it to the SB.

 

Lots of examples of 1 year wonders too, most recently Dan Quinn in Washington.  

 

Lets see if Pats and Bears continue to have that kind of success moving forward.

 

I think Beane has created a mess in cap and decisions at WR - even at that, this years AFC division winners (atm), are all led by QBs who haven't proven any playoff success.  Anything can happen this year in the AFC.  Likely without KC or Cincy in the way, I like our odds in any matchup if we can get in.

We missed the boat with Johnson and possibly Vabrel, I'm not sure there are coaching candidates to that caliber this summer. 
 

Even the coach for Cinci, he hasn't done a thing. If he became available I don't know if he's an upgrade?

 

Folks act like it can't be worse. It totally can. You can't just "make a move," you have to make the correct move. You HAVE to be correct. The world where we miss having the 11-13 win, Divisional-AFC title knock out games absolutely exists. 
 

Pegs NEEDS to get the timing right on the next GM/HC. 
 

It's easy to pound the table and say 'make a change,' but who are we bringing in? Who replaces McD? Who replaces Beane?

Terry and many folks here seem to be happy sitting on a nice Regular Season win/loss record, and some AFC East Championships (although those days seem to be over now that there's a better HC in the Division).

I agree and have come around completely to it this year.

 

We all know it won't happen though. If were hell bent on not changing, WTF is stopping us from going out and hiring the best G-D OC & DC possible. Stop being cheap.

 

We can pay backups a few million... but shelling out a few mill a year for top coordinators seems like an incredibly cost efficient, highly predictable output chances.

I mostly agree with this. Our passing offense scares me though. In 6 games since the bye week we've only seen the passing offense have 2 good games. It's just hard to imagine winning 3 road games in a row and then the Super Bowl with such an inconsistent passing offense. I guess the optimistic scenario is we get Kincaid and Palmer back healthy and that ends up being enough. We will still have to mostly rely on the run game though and I worry about what will happen when we inevitably get in a playoff matchup where the run isn't successful.

Pretty sure we've made Brady a top paid OC. I dont think it's a spending issue. I think it's more a McD needs to be the biggest fish issue. 

 

Brady was specifically the "Passing Game Coordinator" that legendary year at LSU. He ran a pass-happy offense before, and started that way here. But McD wore him down and enforced a run-first, "Complementary" gameplan (aka dont expose the precious defense).

 

We certainly arent going to bring in an experienced DC that runs a different scheme than McD's. No change to a Schwartz/Spags/etc type. Plus those guys could be hired as Interim HC. So aint happening.

But to your forebearance point, Harbaugh has won a SB (with Joe Flacco at QB, during the Brady/Manning era) and earned a bit more leeway.

Yeah I agree - it will need to be a healthy Kincaid and Palmer.  And our offense/defense clicking at the right time, getting back to winning the turnover battle.

 

Lots of things need to become more "consistent", but with Josh at the helm, I'd take us in any matchup.  We are having issues "stacking" victories right now, this week will be another playoff type game then same at the Pats.

Depends on how you define "perennial contender".

 

I agree with @MJS and others that he'd be hired right away, and could elevate a bottom-dweller. He wouldve been perfect in Carolina the last couple of years. Weakish division. They'd be in the hunt and favored to take that Division every year, therefore a perennial contender.

 

But that doesnt change anything here, and isnt even relevant to our situation and conversation.

 

McD pretty much admits it himself. The signs all over OBD say "Playoff Caliber". He's never changed them to "Championship Caliber" when that is the current goal.

I think Bill’s problem is he couldn’t envision a world where he couldn’t be coach and gm.  Very likely would’ve been scooped up again otherwise 

 

Tomlin will get scooped up very fast if he leaves also imo.  With that anonymous report that a veteran hc is lookin for a change of scenery and staring at their first below .500 season in awhile I think that’s probably Tomlin wanting to go to NYG
