Kicker decision between Bass /Prater

I think if Prater kicks well the next couple of games you keep bass on IR as long as you can. If it means season long IF I’m okay with it. Big 47 yarder at the end of game.
 

Wrong decision by McDermott cuz if he misses it, mia gets the ball on the 37. I punt there and hope to pin them on the 10. ended up fine, but I still think it was the wrong

decision

He's 9/9 on xpts

He's 7/8 (88%) on fgs with a 48 and 52 yarder. He's had 3 career seasons kicking 90%. He shanks one kick and everyone starts losing it....just stop....I'm riding Prater the rest of the season. I lost faith in Bass when he missed that KC kick. We way overpaid him on that extension.

It didnt help, but the Bills not being able to get off the field on 3rd down was the killer. Giving Josh the ball a couple more times wouldve put the game out of reach much sooner.

When Josh got sacked it was on the right side, but the refs marked it in the middle. So Prater, like a golfer, was thinking I can't fade. and he over cooked it.

A guy thinking donlt push it right and he over compensated. 

That was my initial thought. Guy had been hitting a fade and then he's facing the tee shot that demands the draw. Hit one like that yesterday at Torrey. Lol

It was a horrendous miss but Prater has been incredible making all the rest and all extra points. An established vet that didn’t let the terrible miss get in his head as he iced the game

Bass has a higher career FG% than four-time Super Bowl champ and three-time All-Pro Adam Vinatieri, for *****’s sake. 

 

What the ***** else do we want? He missed a couple XPs and FGs - it ***** happens.

Again, who do you trust more? Bass' FG% in the Playoffs dips to 70%. And we all remember him missing that crunch-time kick against KC a couple years ago. Prater is 92.3% in the Playoffs. He has missed one FG attempt out of 13 and is 19 of 20 on EP's. I say we ride with Prater unless he looks like he loses the job.

Watched the replay.  He looked fine on setup, ball was dead center, he just missed it badly.  It happens.

It appeared the hold was fine.

 

Kickers need  a "cornerback mentality" and not allow a miss even a bad one like that to get stuck in their head

Yes that was an ugly miss. But Prater shook it off. A miss like that and Bass is in a 3 week funk. 

 

A kicker is a lot like a golfer. Need perfect mechanics without thinking. But for as long as I've golfed and practiced my swing, every once and a while I shank one off the tee. It happens. 

 

The key is Prater is a vet, stayed calm and nailed the rest of his attempts.  Plus he will have all the practice and game reps with Johnston as the holder. Let's not shake something up if it's working.

The longest FG streak in NFL history is 44. No kicker is 100%.

Ultimately, it depends if/when Bass is ready.

 

Prater had one bad kick but he’s been money on all the others. There are at least 5 other teams who would take Prater over their current kicker, so holding onto him as long as he’s healthy is a boon. If Bass is ready by week 8 we could potentially trade Prater and keep Bass, or put Bass on season ending IR and keep Prater for the season. 
 

Bass is your long term answer for now, and until we have one waiting in the wings I think it’s foolish to move on. Prater is 41, so don’t plan on him being here long.

at least extra points aren't an adventure every time. prater can stay. bass can practice the ONE thing he's gotta do for an entire season.

I think Bass is better at the new kickoffs, for that's worth. Prater doesn't get it deep enough in the landing zone.

Bass has had those too.  Every other kick by Prater has been down the middle i believe.   I think we likely stick with Bass.
