I know you don't get much from McDermott, the prototypical coach speaking guy. But somehow I detect a different tone starting this year's first Wednesday presser. Notice how he repeated the theme of looking to get better as the season goes along. I believe he said it 4 times in this single presser. Not much of the type he typically says like "in order to win, you have to have the fundamentals" blah blah. You can take it two ways. For those looking for positives, you can say McDermott matured in that it really does not matter how you start, it's how you finish, as in playing your best going into the playoff and having injury stuff lining up for you. For those looking for negatives, you may say McDermott is already preparing us for a loss coming Sunday because he's focusing on the big picture of finding the right guys and preparing the young guys, especially rookies that we have to count on, for later in the playoff.

We get at least one of these threads every season.

He's the same guy he's always been and always will be. The Bills will have to win the super bowl in spite of him, not because of him.

I think someone is saying enough is enough, we need some of these young guys to play and contribute in the postseason this year. Playing them early and allowing them to make mistakes in game time situations will be worth it in the long run.

I don't think it's just about the young guys. Look who we drafted. Look who we brought in. If you follow the guys covering the team, they all say our approach on defense looks different this year. More pressure, more rushers, more guys in man covering one-on-one, more diversity in concepts. It could take us a bit to find the right combinations and find a new identify. McD is evolving and so is the defense.

I agree with this but I hope we’re both wrong and he finally gets it together and we win it all

McDermott knows the NFEL has already scripted an opening week loss to the Ravens, who will avenge their Playoff defeat, as the mighty Lamar Jackson will begin his campaign towards a 3rd MVP and first SB ring.

If McDermott, Babich and and Brady feel uncomfortable and coach like they are uncomfortable until they have the #1 seed locked up, the Bills will be in the Super Bowl this year.  If they are comfortable with their roster, their playbooks and playcalling from day 1, they will still win the division, but their chances of being the Super Bowl will be less than 20%.   They literally need to get out of their comfort zone to get to the next level.

We hear a lot of people say the Bills need to part ways. But I would guess McD decides to part ways sooner than we decide to do it. He's basically coaching every season with Super Bowl or bust expectations. Mounting pressure as he and Allen break into statistical categories that haven't occurred in the sport for achievements without going to the big game. That can't be fun and it can't be sustainable. He either does it and pulls a Dungy and walks away or he doesn't do it and he takes a break from coaching.

It's always been like that...the Bills typically are peaking in December where they have a phenomenal record under McD.

At the end of the day, this team will only go as far as the D lets them in the playoffs, which is always their Achilles heel in January.

Until he figures out how to at least get an average performance in key games, we are going to continue to spin our wheels.

Colts went to Super Bowl with Caldwell right after Dungy left….
