The practice squad is very different than it used to be. It is now essentially an extension of your roster, more so than just a training ground for young players.

McDermott and co seem to have consciously decided this season to use their six veteran practice squad spots largely on players that know the Bills' system and locker room inside and out. Known quantities. Good locker room presences. Good teammates. In some cases, good leaders and mentors for younger players.

Gabe Davis, like Jordan Poyer and Dane Jackson, will likely spend the season on the practice squad, providing leadership, mentorship, and staying ready in case they're called upon. Barring injury, they aren't likely to be called up. If they ARE, though, they'll be ready, and McDermott knows it.

Davis, by the way is just 26 years old, and we've seen him produce in both the regular season and postseason for Buffalo. He averaged about 700 yards and 7 TDs a season in Buffalo, which would have made him comfortably the second most productive receiver on the team last year.

You could do much, MUCH worse for a practice squad receiver.

Josh might throw a few more interceptions in practice but it's a good depth signing.  From WR2 to practice squad in one year.  Life comes at you fast.

He got his $18mil plus more so I get it.  Just didn't want him back.

I don't see the downside unless he has to play and I hear Romo scream "Big Game Gabe" after making one catch for seven yards.

You now have a more realistic option should one or both miss significant time, or ineffectiveness.  Samuel's issue is and continues to be availability, and Moore has never really lived up to his draft spot.  He's no longer "2nd round pick" moore, and is now journeyman Moore - its realistically his last chance to revive his career.  He's been very quiet, and his mouth has been an issue in the past, so it seems like he's doing the right things off the field.  He needs to step up when he's on the field this year.

I'm not holding my breath that either Samuel or Moore have any longevity in them. Gabe will at some point see the field. I'm ok with this signing as insurance and a wr who can occasionally come up with a clutch catch.

It gives Gabe access to the Bills training staff and facilities.

Offers proof that when BB says he loves the player and not the price tag that he means it.

Adds a trusted and familiar face to the locker room.

Gives them a solid option to help them through the inevitable WR injuries encountered during a 17 game season.

Costs very little in actual dollars due to offsets.

Seems like an easy to like, practice squad move to me.

It’s fine. He was a stellar blocker and made a lot of highlight catches. As a WR4, you can do much worse. I just hope he doesn’t take many snaps from Shavers.

I have zero problem with this...  using a practice squad for depth with familiarity fine...  making him our number 2 receiver, I have a problem... unless he performs like it... but brining him in as a guy if we have injuries...  not sure whats negative about that...  like whats gonna happen? He is gonna move Samuel from 4 to 5 assuming he isnt the one that is injured..

People assume he's going to be counted on as WR2 and get upset.

But as a practice squad player, it is more than justified. He's 26. And you know he CAN have a 4 TD game (in a playoff game, against one of the better defenses) if people don't pay much attention to him.

Fingers crossed 🤞 that he can get and stay healthy for a change,

There’s like 6-7 spots for veterans. They should all be doing this. The bills just seem to have more higher profile guys.

It is 6 spots for veterans, and you’re right.

Never seen a practice squad like this, are other teams using it like this, for older and injured players?

Over the past 10 seasons which practice squad guys have we called up that stuck as key contributor? The days of keeping you developmental guys on the ps are over….you want guys that you know can fill in right away when getting called up.
