McD and his schemes haven’t come through when needed, but I can’t say he’s equally as bad as Marty-ball. McD has a Reid/Chiefs problem for the most part, Marty was losing against everyone. The league in general largely has a Chiefs problem. If not for them, Lamar and Allen probably each have at least 1 SB win minimum. 1 2 Quote

Theres not one positive thing I can take away from these two games aside from the potential of Jordan Hancock next year because McDermott won’t play him with his ultra-complicated wizard level Safety requirements. Sums it up perfectly. And it’s not just safety where it seems overly complicated. It’s basically the whole defense. Would be nice to have an attacking downhill defense that puts the hurt on the offense than the undersized thinking man’s defense where offenses put the hurt on our defense. Quote

Safety to me is a position that shouldn't be drafted in the first 2 rounds, and if you do draft one they better be a total stud. To me the first 2 rounds are about premium positions with high end athletic traits. Safety is not a position where I care as much about athleticism. Obviously I'd prefer to have better than Hamlin out there but I'm also not panicking over it. Agree to disagree on this one Alpha. Pretty much all of PFF and the ESPN lists from coaches/executives on the top safeties are 1st or 2nd rounders. There are a couple of third and one fourth rounder and then reed blankenship who was udfa. The problem here is not when the bills take safeties its who they take. Cole Bishop was perfectly fine being drafted where he was, the 40's and 50's is where most of the top guys were drafted.....The problem here is The Bills front Office continues to miss on defensive players. It is the weakness of the organization. They simply can not identify top talent in the draft on defense. then this year they just completely lost their minds and had a horrendous group of free agents on defense trying to make up for the mistakes in the draft. its been a rough stretch going back about 2 years for the front office when signing free agents and specifically defensive players. 2 Quote

No, but on Saturday (after Hamlin and Bishop looked awful) posters with concerns were spoken to like they were nuts. And now the HC says he doesn't have the position figured out yet. I can't think of one other superbowl contender in a similar spot right now. Quote
MikePJ76 Posted Tuesday at 05:27 PM Posted Tuesday at 05:27 PM If they were going to bring in another veteran safety I guess the one tradeable chip they have that teams would actually want would be ryan vandermark if Buffalo is actually willing to move him. Probably just brings back a depth level safety though someone like markquese bell in Dallas who can not play the run at all but is decent in coverage. Quote
GolfandBills Posted Tuesday at 05:30 PM Posted Tuesday at 05:30 PM Yeesh… poor safety play will cripple this team this season. 1 Quote
Cash Posted Tuesday at 05:31 PM Posted Tuesday at 05:31 PM 32 minutes ago, Alphadawg7 said: No disrespect, but I don't agree with this philosophy at all, which also gets thrown around with RB's. Just because there are some examples where some later round picks panned out doesn't mean that is the place to target impact players. I mean Brady was a 6th round pick, Kurt Warner was UDFA, Brock Purdy Mr. Irrelevant - thats not an indicator to future success of finding franchise QB's. You are not finding Ed Reed's easily on day 3 picks, if ever. One thing everyone complains about here is not finding more top end talent, and when we have holes in positions, like we have had at Safety, why should they settle for just looking for a capable starter at best in the late rounds and then just hoping for the rare off chance they actually find a pro-bowler like Hyde and Poyer eventually became? And lets be real about Hyde and Poyer, it took them a while to get to that level, they were not impact players early in their careers and didn't blossom until they left their original teams and went on to play for the Bills. Finding a late round rookie safety who doesn't blossom until their next team adds no value to a team pursuing a SB today. The Bills should absolutely be looking to upgrade the weakest positions in FA and early in drafts while we are in the SB hunt, especially given how important the S position is in a McD defense. The Ravens not only drafted Ed Reed in the first round, they drafted Kyle Hamilton which they obviously don't regret also in the first round - and now they just also drafted Malaki Starks in the first round to play opposite him 3 years later. Doesn't mean Bishop proves to be the right guy or not, but the decision to address one of our weakest position groups at one of our most important positions in the 2nd round is not a bad approach in my book. Good post. Regarding Hyde & Poyer, I would also point out that both were drafted at CB and eventually moved to S. I think Poyer moved to S while still with the Browns, but Hyde was a Cam Lewis type (but better) for the Packers until we moved him to S full-time. 2 1 Quote
zow2 Posted Tuesday at 05:32 PM Posted Tuesday at 05:32 PM For F-sakes just make a deal and shore up the back end. The window has been wide open for a few years now and this year. Don't let it slip by depending on oft injured Rapp, Hamlin and Bishop, that's not going to cut in in January games vs excellent QBs. 3 1 Quote

Pete Posted Tuesday at 05:42 PM Posted Tuesday at 05:42 PM Bishop missed several tackles. Tackling is fundamental football We dont need a robotic Safety, who misses tackles(Safety is the last line of defense). Ravens will abuse Cole. Beane and McD needs to figure out Safety position real quick, like yesterday Quote

The takeaway is that after an entire offseason where Bishop seemed locked in as the starter, he has fallen out of favor and is now in an open competition. You can't just live with mental mistakes that directly lead to TDs. They've given him every chance and he hasn't seized the opportunity. If there's one thing McDermott hates, its injuries. Nothing lands you in his doghouse faster than getting hurt. I heard McD used to prank call Baylon Spector at 3AM "is your refrigerator running? Good luck catching it you injured piece of s@#$!" 6 Quote
Bleeding Bills Blue Posted Tuesday at 05:56 PM Posted Tuesday at 05:56 PM 41 minutes ago, Alphadawg7 said: This. Well said, doesn't mean Bishop is looking like a star had he not missed time, but missing time has certainly done him no favors, especially with the mental aspect of playing safety in a McD defense. And I think McD was sending a message today more than anything and hopefully it helps. Bishop was also not playing out there with the guys he will normally be playing with, so being behind is tough enough, and then having to do it with mostly 2nd string guys out there too compounds the problem instead of the veteran guys who can do their jobs better and also help him on the field too. Not making excuses for him, and you aren't either. But for a young player in this Defense, the missed time and lack of time with the starters is certainly not helping. Yep - and calling him out will always indicate that they need him to get on the field and out of the trainers room. 2 Quote

I don’t care that he won’t be here. 71 ending up on his back was embarrassing. Two consecutive false starts by your swing tackle shoes lack of attention to detail. 44 looking like a fish out of water when not playing downhill was painful. No rhythm from the QBs. McD is going to make them work this week in practice. Let’s see if they resist the urged to call washed up old friend Jordan Poyer given the friggin disaster that is the safety room. 10 minutes ago, Jauronimo said: If there's one thing McDermott hates, its injuries.
