30 of 32 second round picks unsigned including Bills pick TJ Sanders

The sticking point is guaranteed contracts for second round players. The first two picks in the round have been granted fully guaranteed contracts. Now the remainder of the picks in the second round are holding up signing as they look for the same.  This includes TJ Sanders for the Bills.

 

It will be a shame if Sanders misses camp over this issue s The Bills likely have him heavily penciled into their D-line rotation plans.

Sanders is a key piece that the team likely hope can plug into the D-line rotation. I think the NFL needs to adjust the slotting system again because the whole point of "slotting" contracts was to avoid the hold outs that plagued first round picks prior to the slotting system. Now we have almost an entire round sitting out because the slotting system doesn't account for percentage of contracts guaranteed? This isn't just on the teams that gave their second round pick 100% guarantees this is on the CBA for keeping this open.

Id imagine Players Union, Agents, and NFL Reps are all working to try and find some type of general framework that gets everybody in the same ballpark... then teams and players can take it from there. Its not a real concern of mine.

 

A whole class/round Isn't going to forgo the biggest and most needed payday, right before the finish line.

NFLPA F’d the negotiations in the last CBA. How is it possible that 2nd rd picks are expected to sign non-guaranteed contracts in 2025.

Theoretically, yes.  However, the practical effect of Sanders missing training camp over this is that his potential impact on the Bills defense is greatly diminished.  Unfortunately it is not linear.  Missing time at the beginning of camp, even a week, will likely mean he will be relatively useless for at least the first half of the season.  More than that, we will be definitely be talking about a wasted high second round pick.  Sorry, but I am going to blame the player for that.

I said it another thread… I think these guys should all get as much as they can as soon as they can. Football careers can be built or destroyed by the organization combined with the coaching staff and the player all meshing well and seeing things the same. How many guys washed out because of the situation they got drafted into and then their confidence shook, an injury handled incorrectly, whatever else… No get paid. Get paid as much as you can. You have earned that right.

Leave it to the Browns to give out another stupid contract that messes things up for everyone.  
 

With that being said, I have zero issue with guaranteed contracts for high pick rookies due to the small shelf life they have.  
 

I also believe they should adjust contracts based on position.  RBs so rarely get second contracts that I’d be okay with them being paid more (again, maybe just for those taken in the first 3 rounds)

2nd round picks aren’t really in danger of getting cut, or asked to take pay cuts, so I don’t see the issue with guaranteed money. As long as they’re healthy they’ll get all that they sign for anyway.

Interesting article in several newspapers. Only 2 of the 32 2d round draft picks have been signed.

 

The Bills' 2d round pick, DT TJ Sanders is one of the unsigned.

 

The sticking point is fully guaranteed contracts. In the past, teams did not offer fully guaranteed contracts to 2d rounders. This year Texas and later Cleveland broke with tradition and gave their picks fully guaranteed contract, both about $12 million.

 

As a result, the other 2d rounders are also holding out for fully guaranteed contracts.

Now THIS would also be a form of collusion where the agents for all 2nd round picks got together and decided none of them would sign until someone got fully guaranteed money and then they all would try and follow suit.

The 43rd pick signing is great for Bills. At 88% of contract guaranteed and Sanders being the 41st pick, they will probably be at 90-92% and get the deal done. 

 

Contract will probably be around $10.5 million over 4 years so every 1% over 88% is worth $105k in guaranteed money. In the grand scheme of things, it's not a lot so it shouldn't take too long to get him signed (and everyone else from 34-42).

Out of principle I usually side with the billionaire owners.  Might have to make an exception on this one though.  If the NFL player's union was stronger this would've already been guaranteed when they first negotiated the rookie wage scale.

you could say this about any term. Unless you dictate the rookie contract template, it is what it is.
