Allen's performance in 2024, however, erased any doubt, with his play applying pressure on Mahomes for the top spot. With nearly 4,300 total yards, 40 touchdowns and 6 interceptions in 2024, Allen showed what his very best garners: an MVP award and 13 regular-season wins despite the lack of a true No. 1 receiver in his prime.

"He's done everything," an NFC personnel executive said. "He's answered every test. He makes less mistakes and takes care of the ball. Only thing left to do is win it all."

Allen epitomizes the modern quarterback, with mobility that can thwart just about any defense, which makes him dangerous in the pocket but even more so out of it.

Pressure did not affect Allen last season, when he led the NFL in QBR (85.3) and yards per dropback (6.5) under pressure, and his 13 passing touchdowns under duress tied the NFL lead. Allen also had the lowest sack rate in the entire NFL on all dropbacks (2.6%) despite his willingness to stay in the pocket to let plays develop or to buy time and scramble.

Conversely, Allen's 18.1% off-target rate was the worst clip among the 18 quarterbacks who received at least one vote in this year's top 10.

"He's still got that risk-taking to his game and the occasional head-scratching play, but he's taking more calculated risks than wild risks, which is helping his overall play," an NFL personnel evaluator said.”

The bulk of those off target throws they mentioned went to Kincaid. For some reason those two couldn't get on the same page. I bet they fix that this year.

It's unfair, but true. I think JA has eclipsed Mahomes for a little while. But.... Without the ring, SB MVP you have to keep picking Mahomes.

Josh can't do it all by himself, he almost has, but that's not on him. It's just the way it is.

Yep. And Coleman.

Wait for the list to populate and then click on each WR and you can see how often Allen connected with them. Only works on desktop (no mobile).

I’m fine with Mahomes being #1.  It’s true he doesn’t look all world the last two years, but at least Allen was a strong #2.  The others are all appropriate to be in the top 10.  We can debate how they ranked, but the right 10 guys are on the list.  I would’ve placed 1 slot higher, but that’s squabbling. and to some extent petty.  I’ve watched every Bucs game for the last 30 years, and he saved Tampa from mediocrity.

You know just like Allen is so Buffalo, Baker is the same for Tampa.  He’s fiery which balances out Bowles demeanor.  Bowles as a side note is actually pretty funny as I’ve seen so many interviews with him.  The bottom line is there is a tier at the top and Until Mahomes is far away from his SB rings, he’ll still be at the top along with JA, Joe Cool, and Lamar.

Isn't it great that we have a QB this good, that is always considered a top QB?

Since Jim Kelly retired we had a couple decades of crap at QB we had to deal with.

Being in his what, 8th season?  We really need to sit back and enjoy every minute of this kids career, Superbowl win or not.

Agree 100%.  We have hopefully another 8-10 years of this…putting all of your eggs in the basket of whether or not there is an early February game robs you of so much enjoyment.

It will be very disappointing if the Bills don't win a Super Bowl with Josh. I don't want the Bills to "Marino" his career. Even non-Bills fans loving watching Allen play. He is the face of the NFL IMHO.

I remember us getting excited we drafted Todd Collins so yeah it was a long, long time!!! 🫢

I love the red alternate Bills jerseys, and back in the day I had a Rob Johnson one along with a conventional Flutie. After that, I never bought another QB jersey and thankfully I didn't... what an absolutely miserable period that was.

Thought experiment: If Mahomes ended up statistically dead last in every relevant category but the Chiefs still won the Super Bowl (bear with me), would these people still rank him number one over a quarterback who is best in every quarterback but whose team sucks? You see my point. Where is the line drawn? How much credit do you give the QB on a SB-winning team, putting aside his contributions? And how much demerit do you assign the QB who performs at an arbitrary fantastic level but doesn't "take his team" to the ultimate victory?

I think you can make an argument that greatness requires victory, but there is a lot of lazy thinking out there that reflexively dismisses great QBs on bad teams.

If Allen can get that chemistry with Kincaid, he might have one of those all time seasons.

Like Manning's 2013 season type of numbers.

From what I'm hearing, Kincaid is getting open a lot.  Allen his whole career has favored throwing to WR's by a lot.

If we can get this going, that's another element to our offense....it could what the kids today say - lit.

This of course is the thinking that the Palmer and Moore acquisition play as advertised....Coleman takes a positive step.

A lot of "if's" but with a strong offensive line and running game...it's hard not to feel confident.

I was never so wrong about a QB in my life! I watched a lot of him when he was in college.

Calm, cool, accurate. Stoked when we drafted him.

So disappointed how he turned out 🫤

Jalen Hurts isn’t ranked #1 because he won a Super Bowl in dominant fashion.

Mahomes isn’t getting ranked #1 because of this season or last. He’s getting ranked #1 because of what’s he’s done since 2018.

If Josh rips off 3 SBs and 2 MVPs over the next 3 years, then has a down statistical year or two and STILL wins Superbowls, everyone will still say he’s the best and they will be right.

Just to be clear though, it isn't just Mahomes' statistics that have been down. It's his on-field performance. There's a reason that the other 3 top tier QBs all got into the MVP conversation last year, while the QB of a 15-1 team wasn't even mentioned, and it's not because of Mahomes fatigue. He just very plainly hasn't been playing at that level the past two seasons. And the counterargument seems to be that you can just cancel all of that out because his team has won championships. Which I get but that's not how a neutral evaluator would rank QBs. I'm not aware of anyone that studies film and/or analytics that has Mahomes ranked as the #1 QB solely based on on-field performance over the past 1-2 seasons.

At the end of the day it's all splitting hairs, right? Everyone knows the top 4 QBs could turn pretty much any team in the league into a Super Bowl contender. The individual difference between those 4 is not going to be as important as the difference between their respective teams. That's the point of putting QBs into tiers - the tier grouping tells you more about how they impact the team's success than the individual ranking.
