Let me preface this by saying that I am not close to the retirement age yet and I still have alot of work to do if I ever see retirement but I'm also at that age where parents, aunts and uncles, and friends are entering the retirement years and it's been fun watching them get to that stage and for the first time in my life it's something I am starting to think about in the back of my mind.

I think about how if I wanted to remain in WNY I think my ideal place to live would be in one of those Condo's along the water at Niawanda Park.  But as a golfer it would be cool retiring somewhere like North Carolina or Florida where you can pretty much play year round.  The Villages in FL sound like the party spot for retirees.  But I know this Country has alot to offer for retirement communities so would love to hear your opinions

I currently live west of FT Lauderdale. Most likely move a few hours north and maybe west coast of Florida. In a perfect world one of the Virgin Islands.

Im still a ways away (although its approaching faster than I want to believe).

Right now, I think Tennessee is winning.  2nd Place is somewhere in Arizona.  A lot depends on where my kids end up too.

Right here in Columbus Ohio.  My family lives in FL (The Villages and Jacksonville).  You couldn't pay me to live in either place.

Can you explain? Just curious.  I always hear mixed things about The Villages experience.  I know some people that love it and some people that hate it

We will follow our son and his family to some degree. We all live in Atlanta now, but he hopes to move closer to his wife’s family on the west coast of FL (Sarasota) in the next couple years. My wife refuses to endure an entire summer in FL again, so it looks like we will need to have split living arrangements. I’ll never live thru winter again full-time, so going north is out. We like our house and immediate area outside of ATL, so I’m guessing we’ll have a small part-time house or condo that allows dogs in FL.

My wife loves the mountains, but I think we’ll just have to save that for vacations.

I always thought of The Villages as strictly a retirement community, but our sons played against them in HS football. Apparently there are young people there to look out for the old people there. STD’s for everyone

Funny you ask/mention this.  A former boss and friend bought some property down in very South Jersey by the shore.  I think he’s transitioning toward retiring/living down there,

But then he asked me to down there as well.  Which I’m just like retired life must be nice.  Lol.  It’s like over 2 hours from where I live.

Long Island, NY is a wonderful place to live. It has beaches, fishing, golf, great food, highly rated schools, and great medical care. The crime rare is low in most parts. There is just so much good about Long Island but the taxes are just insane. The SALT changes will help to some degree but the taxes are REALLY way too high.

I have been up to Williamsville, NY many times and I absolutely love it there. I could stand the cold but not all of that snow.

I have actually looked at Williamsville real estate in the last week just to get the pulse of things. I could do Williamsville much of the year and love it. I would only make brief winter visits. It’s not that any one day is so severe, it’s that, like summer in FL, it just lasts so damn long!

Already here - planning to work another 7-8 years.  Last year, we built a home in Lexington, SC outside of Columbia. We love it - access to Lake Murray, close to Charlotte, Charleston and Myrtle Beach. Low taxes and reasonable property values, and a few really nice golf courses.  We're set & settled.

Its a ways out so much can change, but were it to happen today we'd retire in Bali.  It really is a paradise.  My concerns are around the increasingly conservative indonesian government, climate change, and over development on the island.  But so far the Gov does not mess with Bali and the robust tourism industry.  You can eat pork and drink beer until you're fat and happy.   Should the congestion get too bad, we'd look to another nearby island.

It kind of depends on where my kids end up living, tbh.  I’d like to be within striking range of both of them if possible.  My wife and I have talked about selling our home and buying a lake house somewhere in the northeast.  Perhaps a return to the finger lakes region.  I like the idea of moving south to get away from the cold and snow.  We’ll see.  I still have have ~20 years to work before I can retire with a full state pension/benefits.  😂

In an ideal world? Somewhere in Tuscany, or perhaps in an ashram in India.

In a more realistic world? The Virgin Islands would be good. I lived on St John for a year and a half and it was beautiful. I miss it. Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Probably keep our camp on the river here in Western PA to spend April-October.

Then buy a winter house somewhere with lots of sunshine and mountains; leaning toward central AZ (Sedona) or maybe SW Utah. Not opposed to the mountains NE of San Diego, but real estate could be prohibitive.

My son might be moving to Bethel (Sunday River), Maine from Valparaiso, Indiana... This might be a game changer for us, especially with daughter in NE/Mid-Atlantic...

i don't think i could ever do one location, but it just depends how life works out as others have mentioned.  i really do like this area this time of year.  we are constantly in the thousand islands or the finger lakes.  tons of good breweries and wineries, great restaurants, etc. on top of that, the weather is actually perfect...most of the time.

a chunk of our family is scattered in southern florida, so i think the move would be to downsize and stay in rochester from june until january 1st.  after that spend the rest of the year near palm beach.   it will partly depend on our kids.

as i think about this, i also realize that it is just as likely that i'll retire, sell everything associated with my work, only to die in the parking lot as i'm leaving the closing.  i'll be so pissed if my wife gets all my *****.
