Gambling has been around forever. Why would it ruin the NFL now. I have been in my company's office pool for a long time now. We also do a Super Bowl pool every year. It's fun and it makes the games you don't really care who wins more interesting if you have money on it.

True, but I don’t remember an instance when a sport actually partnered up w/ gambling companies. Was there ? I can’t recall..

If sportsbooks want to run ads fine, I just hate how much gambling has become a part of broadcasts. I don't care to hear what parlay Terry Bradshaw has cooked up in the pregame show, or for the announcers to give me the updated live odds throughout the game.

Yes, it’s completely ruining the integrity.

There’s something ironic about a game with a weed username fearmongering over gambling and integrity.

Fearmongering? That's a hoot. This same atmosphere almost brought down professional sports 100 years ago but thankfully strong leadership at the commissioner level and ownership dealt with it heavy handedly and for many years we were stable until the Hornung and Karras scandals. There is a reason why sports gambling was outlawed, and eventually we will see it be outlawed again.

There has always been gambling in sports.  Now that it's legal, it can be monitored.

England has had sports betting for a long time.

I believe sports will coexist with betting and be just fine.

We seem to be inclined towards addictive behavior as a nation. We have the highest rate of Drug disorder PER CAPITAL in the world and it's not really close. We are the largest illegal drug market on the planet.

Gambling is a problem and it's going to get worse

Horse racing in North America would not exist as a sport without on track pari-mutual betting, which has been legal since at least the 1930s in states like California, Florida, and New York.   In the 1970s, New York State legalized off-track betting run by state approved regional betting companies.   More recently, casinos, like Presque Isle Casino in Erie, PA, have partnered with horse racing tracks -- or have their own race tracks.

Actually, fixing horse races is very rare despite lots more races run than football games played.  Most of the integrity issues involving racing -- usually trying to sneak performance enhancing drugs into horses -- results from individuals trying to get their own horses to win races rather than conspiring with gambling interests to get a specific horse to win in a specific race.

I saw a study somewhere that indicated that the increased money spent on sports gambling mostly came out of savings/investment

That's a bad trend.

Many, many years ago, Jimmy The Greek (a supposed expert) used to give out picks before NFL games. Seriously, he probably guessed wrong on 75% of his selections. People could have made a ton of money betting against him.

I wonder if there is money to be made betting against Bradshaw and other announcers. If they know who has the best chance to win, I strongly doubt that they would share it with the public and cause the odds to perhaps change.

Assuming the books aren't already entirely cooked. As terrible as the officiating has been the last few seasons, they are absolutely opening themselves up to that idea.  League is fixed, winners are known -> NFL colludes with massive gambling interests

It’s what helps keep the fans engaged.  During the draught it was fantasy.   Now with Buffalo playing all time slots.  Makes the other games more exciting.  Full Sunday slate leading into the Bills game is an absolute treat to watch.  Little fantasy football, little daily fantasy and a little prop or parlay helps build into the Bills game.  That is why stand alone games get so many views compared to everything else.  That little more excitement added to an already exciting sport only helps its viewership.

The books working with leagues makes the ability of players or league employees to make money off it extremely difficult.  Likelihood of a scandal is very low.  Yes, gambling can be an issue for some.  No different than drinking or smoking.

Hats off to the regional OTBs for finding cushy directors positions, once a politician has worn out their welcome with the public. 🤨

The sports leagues are in partnership with these gambling sites.....they are making money just like the gambling companies....... the 9 year old kid whose father blows the rent money betting the under on Chiefs/Texans is the one who will be ruined.

Openly encouraging gambling is akin to having commercials on TV promoting Heroin......they make all the money, not for one second thinking about the victims that are left in their wake.

Sure there are people who can handle a little harmless fun betting on sports, but spare a thought for the people who have an addiction to gambling and especially their family members who suffer the consequences of those people's actions.

The NFL better start paying Officials, REALLY well!

To each his or her own. Myself personally, to me it compromises my likes and dislikes to make a buck.

The possibility of corruption because of the betting has already ruined the game for many fellow Americans in my humble opinion.

I doubt gambling will ruin the NFL. I can see a scandal or two happening, but they will probably bring in some type of reform and all will move on. On the other hand, if CTE isn’t handled effectively, I can envision the elimination of the three point stance, and the NFL eventually becoming a flag football league.

Agree with 1 and 2 for sure, and the UK experience supports both. We have moved towards advertising restrictions and affordability checks, bans on credit cards and other credit functions.

On 3 - not sure that bet "in-play" has actually been proven more dangerous / risky, but if there is evidence to that end interested to see it.

On the evidence part. this is what I found -- it is a small study of 500 Australian gamblers split into groups of those who gamble in game and those that don't.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7644858/#:~:text=Those who bet in-play,betting%2C holding other variables constant.

They found those that bet in-played had more problem gambling issues.  The study is certainly not definitive since their two groups were not from the same socio-economic background though they tried to account for those factors.  Note also that in-game betting is not allowed in Australia so you have to do it via off-shore websites.

gambling can be a dangerous addiction.  find it sad when you hear fan duel ad, followed by a gambling addiction number being spouted out for every state at warp speed.

but hey....logan paul fights are legit....rights?!
