Yeah the Matt Kalil signing turned out to be horrendous.   Gettlenutz wasn't the GM he was on leave with cancer.   But they didn't want to elevate Beane because DG was supposed to get his job back when he recovered.   So they brought back ol' Marty Hurney to technically fill the role temporarily so they didn't have to "demote" Beane later.........but Beane was doing a lot of the GM work at that point.

Your timing is a bit out. Gettleman wasn't diagnosed with cancer after the Panthers fired him and he was the Giants GM by that point. Gettleman was fired about a month after Beane left for Buffalo. The thinking was that ownership's original plan had been to ease Gettleman out that summer and have a smooth transition of power to Beane and when Beane left and that was off the table they just firef him and re-hired Hurney. The reason Gettleman ran out of road in Carolina was largely his people management and as we have seen here Beane is great with owners. He gets how to stroke those egos in order to solidify his position. 

 

Beane had been acting GM and then demoted once before though - between firing Hurney the first time and hiring Gettleman. Brandon interviewed for the permanent gig then and was passed over. And ultimately in 2017 I think he just saw McDermott and the naïve but keen Pegulas as better options to hitch his wagon to than Jerry Richardson and Ron Rivera.

And we’ll see who was right or not by the results of the WRs Beane brought in.  But if he’s proven right, no doubt  Monson will insist he wasn’t.

Yeah the Panthers were caught off guard when Beane left.   Took it for granted that the local guy would hang around until they were ready to give him the job.   That whole offseason with Beane hanging around Carolina until after the draft........even though he knew he was going to be the Bills GM......was very shystie.  

 

If McDermott had done literally ANYTHING but essentially trade Patrick Mahomes to the Chiefs their reported theft of Panthers draft info could be seen as a clever move.   An argument could be made that THAT was their best overall draft in the McBeane era.

 

I know he's not been a particularly good personnel man but I've always taken solace in Howie Roseman not being very good early in his tenure with Philly either.   You can grow into that job if you are smart like Beane.

He was very complimentary of Beane and said he had a point about the results he had gotten.  

 

He just took advantage of Beane exposing himself to say something that otherwise wouldn't have carried any weight if Beane hadn't shown his thin skin on WGR.

 

But PFF has always really been about big picture grading.   Beane's roster grades well there.   #1 in the NFL scoring and #1 in fewest points allowed from 2020-2024.   

 

The Bills issues have been grossly underperforming in the divisional and championship rounds.  

 

That's a matter of not matching up with the other actual SB contenders in the AFC.    

 

Just not enough difference makers.

Yea I have made the argument that 2017 was their best draft. White, Dawkins and Milano become cornerstone players for the rebirth and two of them are still here 8/9 years later. You do have to factor the Mahomes thing in but I don't think they passed on Mahomes cos Beane said "I don't like him", or McDermott didn't like him. They passed on Quarterback as a position because they wanted to do their homework properly on it (and in fairness 2018 was already known to be a strong group). They got LUCKY to get a shot at Josh the next year but also kinda unlucky that the trade they made ended up passing on a guy Mahomes level good. 

 

Josh probably makes the 2018 draft the best. And they did get Taron Johnson in that class too as a cornerstone... plus Tremaine who they got 5 years out of and Wyatt Teller who they screwed the pooch on trading away. But a new regime NEEDS credibility early and not only the record in 2017 but White, Dawkins and Milano looking like hits gave them that.

It's much the same thing in that each is selecting from a group of people who has had preparation that could potentially prepare them for what is needed from them, but equally doesn't prove that you'll be good at it.

 

There are plenty of men of high character in the group Delta is selecting from. And while all of them had gone through training, except in time of war, most have not killed anyone. And it goes beyond that ...

Beane yelling at the radio hosts, whose job is to discuss the Bills for hours each day, was embarrassing. They made the same comments last year, and Beane ended up wasting a third-round pick on a washed-up Amari Cooper. Either Beane or McDermott needs to go if the team doesn't make a Super Bowl appearance this year. Nothing changes if nothing changes.

 

Especially after the 2024 Free Agent and draft class were all complete busts; hopefully 2025 is better.

Agree. Not a whole lot of people cares to remember (or listen to the show that day) that Jeremy and Joe spent 95% of the show talking up the draft and the picks. Beane gets on after hearing ONE comment and he goes on a radio tour laughing at local guys who actually support and know this team.
