Last year, same thing. It was at a small barn, it was a want to be winery place. Served their wine, like 6 choices, canned beer. Small buffet with desert sized plates, not enough tables, the white plastic folding ones and chairs on uneven ground. Hot and little cover.

I think the Steinfeld-Allen reception should be decent though.

Weddings without an open bar (cash bar) were the *norm* until about 25 or so years ago. Having an open bar in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's was quite rare. Of course, weddings were not the extravaganza that they have become today. But even today, only about 60% of weddings have an open bar.

Josh and Hailee are missing out on a traditional Buffalo Polish wedding. Held at a church hall, pirogi, kielbasa and golumbki buffet catered by bapchas in white aprons, a polka band and a "set up" on every table. (A bottle of Seagram's 7 and a bottle of Oscar's lemon lime or ginger ale, aka a Buffalo open bar.)

Seriously?!? I’m 44 (today actually) and have been to a few dozen weddings I’d say. That was the 1st that I’ve ever been to without one (at least that I remember). Keep in mind, I grew up in a big Italian family that loves the vino.

Same! Large italian family and my papa owned one of the first liquor stores in a suburb of Buffalo. Wine was an every day thing.

But yeah, open bar is a relatively new thing. It started becoming popular in the late 80's and early 90's. Before that, the vast majority of weddings were cash bar

I’ve been to countless weddings starting in the 80’s, and I don’t remember any that did NOT have an open bar. I went to one last year that was catered by Chipotle, and even they had a full open bar. Our DIL used to be a wedding planner, and she always says spend your money on the band and the bar because nobody is going to remember the food.

A few dozen ??? Holy crap, please tell me there’s some explainable reason for receiving that many wedding invites, the alternative of me being friendless and/or myself seen as too poor to afford an acceptable wedding gift is horrifying lol.

 

Im 53 and in my entire life have been invited to maybe 6 weddings and attending 3.

 

 I never thought any kind of way about it… until now lol.

 

Ok ok, I just read your post again and seen you stated you’re from a large Italian family, that makes me feel a little better lol.

My buddy Jeff’s wedding in June 2018, I had an ossobucco that I would kill to have again. 
 

The only other thing I really remember is very suggestively dancing with the mother of the bride.

I'm in my 80's and the only wedding that I attended with a cash bar was in Potsdam, NY. in the 70's. I understand that was common there at that time.
