PFT article implies that Goodell has pushed out potential replacements

When making more than $60 million per year, it’s hard for anyone to have a bad week. Still, last week was not ideal for Commissioner Roger Goodell.

"In a conversation with John Ourand of Puck, ESPN.com’s Seth Wickersham said that an extension will happen — but that owners want Goodell to focus on a succession plan.

'Owners would like to have a better sense of the bench,' Wickersham told Ourand.

The problem is that there isn’t much of a bench. And, frankly, there’s been a trend in recent years that, once an in-house name emerges as a potentially viable candidate to become the next commissioner, the person ends up not sticking around much longer.

Why would they even look for his successor--he's the most successful Commish in modern sports history.  Look at MLB, the NBA and NHL.  

 

A lot of owners' total net worth is essentially the worth of their franchise.  This happened with Goodell taking all the face shots for the Jerrys and Terrys.

The owners would be foolish not to have a solid succession plan in place. Having said that, I hope this gets Cleveland Browns style ugly.  This couldn’t happen to a better guy.

So, i'll play the contrarian here and say I'm glad that he still has the job.  One of my very favorite sports moments every year is seeing him get booed at the draft

I agree with how successful he's been, but he's 66 years old. He only has so many good years left and should really have an heir apparent by this point.

Because he’s 66 and they can play a younger guy likely less.

The commissioner of the NFL is essentially just the public face, mouthpiece, and scapegoat for the NFL team owners.

He says what they want him to say, does what they want him to do, and acts as a human shield and lightning rod for criticism levied toward the league.

In that role, he's been a good and successful commissioner. I imagine he'll continue to be around for a long time to come. 

The problem is, when things are going as well for the NFL as they have been the past decade, and when you're making as much money and enjoy as much prestige as Goodell does, why would either side feel particularly compelled to make any major changes?

 

Eventually, if the owners really do want a succession plan, they'll force the matter. Until then, it's all just noise.

66 isn't old fellas.  More of his bosses are over 80 than are under 65.

 

Why would a younger guy take less money?  Didn't Goodell "set the market"?

Can I ask why? There seems to me so much to enjoy about sports. It's not like booing the commish is a new thing.  No matter who it is they get booed.

If Mother Teresa was the commish, she'd get booed at the draft.

i use to like him, until about 5 or 6 years ago.  He is npw all about money and not product.  Allowing gambling destroyed the NFLs integrity.

66 is old for a CEO type position like this. Tagliabue was younger than Goodell is now when he retired. 

 

How many team owners older than Goodell don't have a succession plan in place?

That's not really his role though.  The owners basically tell him what to do and he's the punching bag.  If he didn't embrace the money the NFL can make off gambling he'd have been fired.

Its amusing that some don’t appear to understand that the Owners run the show, and as you stated Rodger is in essence a front company,
