Just wondering aloud here, I just saw WWE cancelled plans to host Wrestlemania 42 in New Orleans. Buffalo is a great wrestling city, they’ve hosted numerous big wrestling events over the years, but they haven’t had any of the real marquee big events (Wrestlemania, Summerslam, Survivor Series and Royal Rumble).

With this new $2 Billion stadium, and our neighbors to the north being some of the biggest wrestling fans in the world, could it eventually be possible? Or is Wrestlemania just too early in the year for WNY even though they’ve run Philly and NJ? If not, do we finally get a Summerslam at the very least?

I get wrestling isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but they have to find some creative ways to maximize revenue for this investment and big WWE events generally include weekend long festivities that are a huge boost for local tourism. I can’t think of many other events that can fill a stadium of that capacity these days aside from Travis Kelce’s meal ticket to Hollywood…

They could do WM, I know in Philly they hung heaters over the ring for the wrestlers. But they may want to go with a later season event instead.

We are a good wrestling City I wanted to say we've hosted numerous big events

We have one WWE pay-per-view in 30 years and no major big 4

Smackdown and raw does come a few times a year it's a good place to bring younger family

It will be interesting to see what/if they choose to do a ‘soft opening’ of the new stadium. I don’t recall such a pre-event back in ‘73 before the infamous traffic disaster that occurred when they opened Rich Stadium on the same night as the Erie County Fair.

My rep at the “Experience” stated they are planning a stadium opening of some sort. Didn’t elaborate.

My guess it will be a stress test on entering and exiting, food and beverage stations, ushers.  Along with walking the stadium, some sort of history exhibit, and a concert.

Surprise retractable roof

Speaking of the disco ball, it appears that much of the field lighting (just like the sound system) is already mounted to the underside of the roof overhang.

They had to. Wind confusion takes a long time to calibrate.

Story with some video of the field area, etc. Reports that the stadium will not be completed until about December 2026, but should be ready for occupancy for fans in June 2026 at ~90% completion.

WGRZ report

At one point this year, construction of the new stadium was 20 days behind schedule, according to the report obtained by 2 On Your Side.

The report cited several winter related events for the construction delay, but by the end of March that gap in the schedule had been erased.

So the stadium is massively over budget and 5-6 months behind schedule? Lmao

Maybe it’s the same with every stadium but it sure feels like everything we do is such amateur hour.

I think it's a rule that government contracts aren't allowed to be completed on time, ever.

This is nothing unusual, and certainly not controversial. The term used in the industry is ‘substantial completion’ and signifies the day that the project can be turned over to the Owner for its intended use. I’d have been shocked if it was anything else. The fact that there’ll be crews working around in a brand new facility (that’s only used one day every other week) is not the least bit unexpected.

The stadium could be built before estimated timelines if they wanted. Would just take more cash.  I’ve seen projects way behind get done on time with added crews, hours and of course money.  Of course, too many workers can actually stall progress..just needs good management.

Like any construction project there will be schedule issues. That’s why there are project managers to get it back on track.

I'm not surprised, because I swear, I remember reading an article before they even started construction, that said the stadium would be open for the 2026 season, but not 100% completed until early 2027.
