All 7th rounders have long odds to make a roster

They are indeed facing an uphill battle. I have to wonder how many would rather have been undrafted so they could pick a place where they have a better shot of being developed and making a roster. Making the top rosters is tough, and you have to hope you get enough preseason game film to be attractive elsewhere.

UDFA has the advantages you indicate. However, in this particular case, I think Broeker has a pretty good chance to stick.

And also, in general, still think most players want to be drafted, even if it's late seventh. Most of these guys are going to be longshots to make a squad anyway. It's got to be something to be able to go through the rest of your life telling folks legit that you were drafted by an NFL team.

I agree he landed in a good spot, and nobody wants to be “overlooked”. While I’d rather be drafted, if you can land with a team with a weak position group your odds improve. In this case, he landed on a good team, and we have a need in his strike zone. Win/win. 🤞

I'd love him to make a roster, but who do you think he can replace?

There are 5 interior guys ahead of him - Morse, Torrence, Bates, McGovern and Edwards. I can see him fighting for spot with the last one, but he has $1.7M fully guaranteed contract. I know Beane can do what he did last summer with Howard, but it is still an uphill battle for Broeker. And that doesn't even count with Boettger.

Or do you guys think he can fight with Doyle or Quess for OT spot?

Oline is always a sought after commodity. There aren't enough of them to go around. If he makes the roster, any number of those players would have trade value, so it's not a situation where you are cutting someone to make room.

Anderson and Tenuta the last two late round OL did not make the roster.

This guy will have an uphill battle to make it too

Anderson is still under contract to the Bills.  Sometimes these fringe guys hang around for a few years.  If they develop, then they may contribute in the future, if not, they eventually get replaced by other fringe guys who might develop.  I think it's an aspect of roster management that every GM has to work on.  Most guys on the fringe never develop, but if you don't work at finding these guys, you never have a chances of hitting on a guy that can help your team.  The Bills have gotten a decent return out of Ryan Bates, who started out as a fringe player.  Levi Wallace was another one.  The odds are low that this kind of player will ever be a core player on the team, but they do make important contributions.

Agreed. The best aspect of ‘hanger on’ fringe players is that the many reps in the system for a few years provides sound continuity when they are called on to enter a game. They’re not just up on that weeks’ opponent, Allen can call a rare play -perhaps from a season ago, from the depths of the playbook for a particular situation and they know the play and what to do. That’s value.

Ethan is talking about Jack Anderson and Luke Tenuta, Jack was a 7th round pick 2 years ago and was on the Eagles and now the Giants. Tenuta was a 6th rounder last year and now with the Packers. Anderson made it to the practice squad and was poached while Tenuta never made it through cuts, claimed by the Colts then the Pack. Alec Anderson the UDFA from UCLA is still here.

But your point is taken and it makes sense to grab these guys, hope to hold ok to them and to develop them. The Bills sound like they really believe in Broeker and if he makes the roster that will certainly mean he earned it.

From Brugler on the Athletic (if you don't get it, come on, be an Athletic Supporter)

Day 3 pick who could surprise: Nick Broeker, G, Ole Miss

A good value pick in the seventh round, Broeker is a strong, assignment-sound player. He might not have the explosiveness or knock-back power desired at the position, but when his technique and leverage remain on the same page, Broeker stays attached and loses slowly. He has experience outside at left tackle but projects as immediate depth at guard. He is a great fit for the Bills’ scheme.

Yeah to me Broeker has a good chance to be an NFL starter at some point.  Maybe not for a long duration.......but I have to question if the people who say he won't ever start have seen the state of OL play in the NFL.   Really good value for a draft that, in general, was seen as shallow.

Glad they didn't pass on a second guard just because they went with Torrence early.   CB and IOL were the deepest positions, IMO and if you do it right you get the value the draft offers.  Just wish they got one of the big traits CB's earlier.   There have been some good CB drafts recently but there is no guarantee that continues so make hay when the sun shines or risking reaching for need later.    Drafts rarely pan out like they look right after they happened, but the Williams pick in round 3 looks like the one spot where they should have gotten more value on paper.  But maybe he pans out great.  He has much better physical tools than Bernard.

In Beane's post-draft session with Chris Brown, he seemed to admit that he was eying running backs with the late-round picks but then reached an oral agreement with Latavius Murray's agent and promised the agent he wouldn't draft a RB.  What I said in the Murray thread - the real value he brings is that signing him prevents Beane from wasting other/more resources on the position.  Seems like drafting Broecker and/or Austin was a direct result of Murray agreeing to terms... amazing.

I think that Latavius Murray would give you everything that a back like say, Roshon Johnson would give you except for youth and a long contract

I’m perfectly OK with that and I like the fact that the GM is bringing in big backs, that can run and punish defenses

At a higher level, something is amiss at OBD in how they view building an offense.  From identification of their scheme, using UFA and the draft to acquire/fit personnel to it, then finally game-planning and in-game adjustments.  It shouldn't take having a hand-shake deal with a veteran RB to recognize value in a specific draft as they did with this pick of Broeker.

It's been 6 complete off-season with this HC and GM to learn and grow in personnel decisions.  Some of it just ain't changing much...even with having a franchise QB.  I suspect they think the best way to help Josh is taking the ball out of his hands and having depth because the position gets banged up so much.  I still don't understand why.
