Did Josh Allen go rogue on the 4th and 1 run.

I was looking at this video and one of the guys brought up a good point that he thought the play call was to hand it off the running back but Josh decided to keep it himself that was why Dawkins basically let his man get to the outside and Diggs didnt even try to block the WR and that gt me to thinking he might be right

So went looking for the play and Dan Orlowsky broke down the play to show it seems like that is exactly what he did.

That took a lot of balls to make that call on your own without your own team knowing what you was about to do. I know he did that before a couple of times this year and that was a huge moment in the game. That is being self confident at its finest.

I would love to see Josh calling his own plays like Kelly used to.  I think Josh would be better.

It would be a disaster without a HoF RB.

It was ok for Kelly to call his own plays because he had a HOF RB who would demand the  football and do something with it.   For Allen, without a true running game, it would be far easier for him to take it upon himself to play hero ball too often.  That will always end in disaster as some of the losses have shown over the last few years.

maybe, or maybe he would do great. i hope they give him the chance in the future, but it will need practice so it is not for this year.

Josh has the option to either hand it off or keep it based on the look the defense gives pre-snap. As soon as the Pats LBs step up to the A gaps just before the snap Josh knows he can keep it.

They put numbers inside, so Josh ran it outside.

I thought it was a nice return-of-the-favor after NE gashed the Bills multiple times to the outside on one of their early drives.

I thought Dawkins let his guy go to the outside because he wanted to avoid a holding penalty that he was already very close to committing

The OP meant he let him get the outside edge at the snap. I don't think he knew the play was going outside. If he did know, then it was really poor footwork.

Definitely didn't go rogue. As others have said it's built in to the rules/design of the play. Count the numbers in the box - if the box is loaded and you can get the edge you keep it on the boot. You'd be surprised how many play calls are determined by box counts.

I always thought a QB bootleg was basically the QB do it on their own with no one, not even his own team knowing.  The ultimate elements of surprise.  I wish we did it more often aka Titian game.

Like others have said, it was clearly an option Josh had, and he picked the right one. The Cheats had totally clogged the middle. They also had guys on the edge and it became a man to man battle on the open field that Josh won. Well designed by the Cheats, but even better played by 17.

Dawkins just avoided getting a holding call. He did block partly.

BTW I wished the Bills D would do the same on obvious sneaks. More often than not, it will work.

Later on in the Orlovsky piece, he talks about Mac Jones INT and how the game could have gotten more out of hand for the Bills.

When the Patriots were on winning streak and Mac Jones was making some of the throws he made, I thought at the time "man, a ball hawking team is gonna pick him".  He's been throwing it into double coverage and making off-target throws and his guys have been bringing it in and making circus catches for him.

Sooner or later that will catch up with a passer.
