In that play design he is likely more a decoy to draw coverage away. Sometimes teams do not fall for the decoy. Or, they may realize that he's not known as Lee "Hands" Smith and they just don't bother covering him.
Magox
He certainly was open for a TD. Well, we won and now that throw by Allen has gone viral, so I guess it all worked out. lol
RoyBatty is alive
What is it with Bill fans, is Lee Smith the new whipping boy now that DiMarco is gone? For years it was Kelsay. You're looking at the wrong TE. Look at the top of the screen.

BearNorth
I'm old enough to remember Butch Rolle was automatic in the red zone. 10 TD's in 5 years covering a total of 14 yards.
Ramza86
Lee was the very last read on that play. Was that DB Sherman? So youre saying if Sherman didnt rush in and saw Lee break he would then start covering Lee? Yeah....there is a reason JA did not look right. hemma
aha .. this solves the mystery of how he managed to get an espn QBR of only 75
eball
Anyone "blaming" Josh for this play simply doesn't. know. football. His progressions were clearly from left to right and he had his man early. No reason for him to even look to the right unless he couldn't pull the trigger to Davis. Mr. WEO
Both the Bills Offense and any opposing Defense ignore Lee Smith.

I remember on his first tenure with the Bills he caught a pass about 10 yards down the sideline and then ran out of bounds. And a Bills WR, maybe Robert Woods, was blocking for him and went up to him and said “Why didn’t you cut up field? There wasn’t anyone there.” And Lee Smith said, “I don’t cut.”
